Higher education often involves academic challenges like course selection or financial aid navigation. Developing effective study skills, mastering time management, refining note-taking techniques, and tackling complex course content demands dedication and proactivity. However, support services such as academic skills workshops and writing centers offer valuable assistance. In the absence of proper guidance, student decisions may hinder academic progress or financial stability. Uninformed course choices can misalign with career goals, and poor financial planning may lead to unnecessary debt. Tailored advice, counseling, and the utilization of free services like academic skills workshops become essential for empowering students to make informed choices and navigate higher education successfully. Academic Support Services and Strategies in Higher Education provides valuable insights into the aspects of successful higher education navigation for students, educators, and those involved in shaping the higher education landscape. It examines the quality, organization, and administration of academic advisement and academic support systems. This book covers topics such as academic welfare, inclusive education, and teacher training, and is a useful resource for academicians, business owners, educators, economists, scientists, and researchers.

The converged management of academic libraries and computer services emerged as a popular model in universities in the late 1980s. Today over half of the higher education sector in the UK has adopted a converged structure and yet there has been little analysis of this radical approach and what it means for the services involved. This timely book takes stock of some twenty years of experience of convergence. It explores management practice throughout the sector in order to assess how extensive the converged model has become, and what variations in the model exist: the reasons for converging - or de-converging, or deciding not to converge at all; the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the model adopted; and what lessons have been learned. Readership: This book is essential reading for all managers in academic libraries and computer service departments, and for all university staff with responsibility for policy in this area.

Flexibility has long been a feature of the delivery of learning in higher education, particularly with the rise in importance of technology in giving learners greater choice over when, where and how they engage in learning. Recent analysis has sought to look beyond its significance in learning delivery to its value as a personal attribute of both learners and educators. Flexibility is now a key feature of debates addressing the role of universities in producing graduates with the capability to become change agents in increasingly dynamic workplaces and the wider world. Flexibility and Pedagogy in Higher Education explores flexibility in learning in the context of online learning communities, in relation to the delivery of learning and as a means of promoting the development of flexibility as a personal attribute. Essays draw on examples involving students from foundation up to postgraduate level in curricular and co-curricular settings. The essays collected in this volume examine the practical application of flexibility in learning through the use of online learning communities. It provides best practice examples for educators looking to use innovative pedagogies to develop flexible learning experiences, thereby building on recent studies on the place of flexibility in the future development of higher education. Student wellbeing is foundational to academic success. One recent survey of postsecondary educators found that nearly 80 percent believed emotional wellbeing is a "very" or "extremely" important factor in student success. Studies have found the dropout rates for students with a diagnosed mental health problem range from 43 percent to as high as 86 percent. While dealing with stress is a normal part of life, for some students, stress can adversely affect their physical, emotional, and psychological health, particularly given that adolescence and early adulthood are when most mental illnesses are first manifested. In addition to students who may develop mental health challenges during their time in postsecondary education, many students arrive on campus with a mental health problem or having experienced significant trauma in their lives, which can also negatively affect physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. The nation's institutions of higher education are seeing increasing levels of mental illness, substance use and other forms of emotional distress among their students. Some of the problematic trends have been ongoing for decades. Some have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic consequences. Some are the result of long-festering systemic racism in almost every sphere of American life that are becoming more widely acknowledged throughout society and must, at last, be addressed. Mental Health, Substance Use, and Wellbeing in Higher Education lays out a variety of possible strategies and approaches to meet increasing demand for mental health and substance use services, based on the available evidence on the nature of the issues and what works in various situations. The recommendations of this report will support the delivery of mental health and wellness services by the nation's institutions of higher education.

Registering for courses, securing financial aid, developing strong study skills, and mastering difficult course material are just a few of the wide variety of obstacles that college students must overcome on their path to graduation. Beyond inadequate academic preparation, first-generation college students may not be able to rely on family or friends for advice about higher education and thus face the additional burden of constructing a support network of mentors and advisors. Without suitable advice and counseling, these students may make decisions that adversely affect their circumstances—and thus, their education. Academic Language and Learning Support Services in Higher Education is an essential scholarly resource that examines the quality, organization, and administration of academic advisement and academic support systems for college and university students that connect them to the academic community and foster an appreciation of lifelong learning. Featuring a wide range of topics such as enrollment services, professional developments, and service learning, this text is ideal for academicians, academic advisers, mentors, curriculum designers, counsellors, administrators, higher education faculty, policymakers, researchers, and graduate students.

Addressing a significant gap in the literature, this book provides conceptual and practical foundations for the development of more effective support strategies to improve academic outcomes for Indigenous higher education students. Authors Martin and Vicky Nakata draw on Indigenous and higher education research, as well as their own experience implementing reforms to Indigenous student support services in Australian universities, to present a method that focuses on helping students to develop the skills and capabilities they need to thrive at university. The book is divided into three sections, the first outlining fifteen key concepts and conditions for student success. The second section provides detailed guidance on individual student case management, from foundational concepts through to implementation. The third section outlines what staff need to consider before attempting to implement changes to practice in their local context, offering a blueprint for assessing current practice, planning for and then implementing change. Presenting an approach that has proven successful in closing the gap between the academic outcomes of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, this book is an essential resource for academic and non-academic staff who support underprepared students to succeed in higher education.
