Il romanzo intreccia tradizioni, radici e storia, è una riflessione su come il mondo cambi, senza mai cambiare troppo. I personaggi incarnano i più alti ideali dell'essere umano, come anche l'eterna lotta contro la malvagità, l'indifferenza e la disuguaglianza; il razzismo, il classismo e la discriminazione religiosa caratterizzano queste pagine, rendendole estremamente contemporanee.
