Aseguran que esta obra puede leerse también como el estudio del conjunto de estrategias que fueron llevando a un grupo de la sociedad civil a construir las bases que en materia legislativa han logrado cambios que años atrás hubieran sido impensables. Sugieren una lectura obligada para estudiosos de movimientos sociales, organizaciones civiles y activistas, que buscan la transformación legal y cultural en contextos diversos. Destacan que esta obra es de interés para quien estudia movimientos sociales, acción colectiva y participación ciudadana, pero, sobre todo, es una lectura indispensable para quien busca entender cómo se pueden ampliar los derechos e incidir en materia legislativa.

El libro que el lector tiene en sus manos reconstruye la historia de las asociaciones que se han encargado de canalizar las expresiones socio-políticas sexuales y de identidad de género en la Ciudad de México. Ellas conforman lo que hoy conocemos como el "Movimiento LGBT". Desde una perspectiva organizacional y mediante la propuesta del concepto campo de movimiento social, se realiza un análisis del quehacer de sus asociaciones: desde las "agrupaciones homosexuales secretas" de los años setenta, hasta las organizaciones civiles LGBT contemporáneas; ello para identificar cómo se "dan por hecho" ideas, relaciones y acciones en el movimiento, y cómo se vinculan con su entorno. Las prácticas interpretativas aplicadas por las asociaciones acerca del desarrollo de la sociedad civil mexicana —en articulación con las identidades, la cultura y los derechos sexuales— resultan piezas clave para comprender la institucionalización del Movimiento LGBT contemporáneo. La tesis doctoral que sirve de aliento a este Cuaderno de Investigación fue distinguida por dos prestigiosos premios: segundo lugar del XXII Certamen de Investigación y Ensayo Político, Instituto Electoral del Estado de México, 2019; tercer lugar del XIII Premio a la Investigación sobre Sociedad Civil, Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía, 2017.

The city of Buenos Aires has guaranteed all couples, regardless of gender, the right to register civil unions. Mexico City has approved the Cohabitation Law, which grants same-sex couples marital rights identical to those of common-law relationships between men and women. Yet, a gay man was murdered every two days in Latin America in 2005, and Brazil recently led the world in homophobic murders. These facts illustrate the wide disparity in the treatment and rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations across the region. The Politics of Sexuality in Latin America presents the first English-language reader on LGBT politics in Latin America. Representing a range of contemporary works by scholars, activists, analysts, and politicians, the chapters address LGBT issues in nations from Cuba to Argentina. In their many findings, two main themes emerge: the struggle for LGBT rights has made significant inroads in the first decade of the twenty-first century (though not in every domain or every region); and the advances made were slow in coming compared to other social movements. The articles uncover the many obstacles that LGBT activists face in establishing new laws and breaking down societal barriers. They identify perhaps the greatest roadblock in Latin American culture as an omnipresent system of "heteronormativity," wherein heterosexuality, patriarchalism, gender hierarchies, and economic structures are deeply rooted in nearly every level of society. Along these lines, the texts explore specific impediments, including family dependence, lack of public spaces, job opportunities, religious dictums, personal security, the complicated relationship between leftist political parties and LGBT movements in the region, and the ever-present "closets," which keep LGBT issues out of the public eye. The volume also looks to the future of LGBT activism in Latin America in areas such as globalization, changing demographics, the role of NGOs, and the rise of economic levels and education across societies, which may aid in a greater awareness of LGBT politics and issues. As the editors posit, to be democratic in the truest sense of the word, nations must recognize and address all segments of their populations.

Global Prescriptions is a critical yet optimistic analysis of the role of transnational women's groups in setting the agendas for women's health in international and national settings. Queering the Public Sphere in Mexico and Brazil is a groundbreaking comparative analysis of the historical development and contemporary dynamics of LGBT activism in Latin America’s two largest democracies. Rafael de la Dehesa focuses on the ways that LGBT activists have engaged with the state, particularly in alliance with political parties and through government health agencies in the wake of the AIDS crisis. He examines this engagement against the backdrop of the broader political transitions to democracy, the neoliberal transformation of state–civil society relations, and the gradual consolidation of sexual rights at the international level. His comparison highlights similarities between sexual rights movements in Mexico and Brazil, including a convergence on legislative priorities such as antidiscrimination laws and the legal recognition of same-sex couples. At the same time, de la Dehesa points to notable differences in the tactics deployed by activists and the coalitions brought to bear on the state. De la Dehesa studied the archives of activists, social-movement organizations, political parties, religious institutions, legislatures, and state agencies, and he interviewed hundreds of individuals, not only LGBT activists, but also feminists, AIDS and human-rights activists, party militants, journalists, academics, and state officials. Mediante una aproximación antropológica al trabajo y la presencia del Grupo Unigay en el Movimiento Lésbico, Gay, Bisexual y Transgenérico (LGBT) de la Ciudad de México a finales de los años noventa del siglo pasado, en este libro se exponen los desarrollos académicos y socioculturales del movimiento gay global y local, y sus contribuciones a la construcción de la identidad gay como una categoría teórica y social legítima en los estudios sobre diversidad sexual y en la sociedad mexicana. El amplio y detallado estudio etnográfico analiza los procesos de asimilación y reproducción del discurso identitario gay local por parte del Grupo Unigay. En específico, se estudian las implicaciones personales y las políticas de la participación en el grupo, en la Marcha del Orgullo LGBT y en los eventos antisida - organizados por los movimientos LGBT y de Lucha contra el Sida -, en los procesos de desclosetamiento y construcción de la identidad gay individual y colectiva de los miembros, y el tipo de relaciones establecidas con dichos movimientos.
