Time is short in emergency situations; the need for action becomes imperative. Biomedical Informatics can be invaluable in supporting the management of emergency medicine, and the need for the creation of Accident and Emergency Informatics (A&EI) as a novel subfield became obvious. As in all areas of Biomedical Informatics, A&EI must deal with issues such as relevant data collection, the management of data extracted from accident sites, health records or sensors, wearables and apps, and appropriate data processing, with the dual purpose of preventing harm and decision support. This book is an introduction to the research and application domain of A&EI, and is the product of three years’ work by the Working Group in A&EI of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA). The book presents ten chapters organized in four sections. The first section explores the framework for achieving an emergency-informatics health information infrastructure; the second focuses on the gathering of critical clinical data related to the building up of a smart environment for A&EI; the third introduces state-of-the-art technologies for integration into virtual emergency registries; and the final part considers the delicate issues of patient safety raised by the introduction of surveillance technologies into clinical care, along with other issues presenting challenges to the domain of A&EI for the future. The book is an important contribution to the field of A&EI, and will be of interest to healthcare professionals, informaticians, and all those who want a better understanding of the domain of Accident and Emergency Informatics.

Data science, informatics and technology have inspired health professionals and informaticians to improve healthcare for the benefit of all patients, and the field of biomedical and health informatics is one which has become increasingly important in recent years. This volume presents the papers delivered at ICIMTH 2022, the 20th International Conference on Informatics, Management, and Technology in Healthcare, held in Athens, Greece, from 1-3 July 2022. The ICIMTH Conference is an annual scientific event attended by scientists from around the world working in the field of biomedical and health informatics. This year, thanks to the improvement in the situation as regards the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent lifting of restrictions, the conference was once again a live event, but virtual sessions by means of teleconferencing were also enabled for those unable to travel due to local restrictions. The field of biomedical and health informatics was examined from a very broad perspective, with participants presenting the research and application outcomes of informatics from cell to populations, including several technologies such as imaging, sensors, biomedical equipment, and management and organizational aspects, including legal and social issues. More than 230 submissions were received, with a total of 130 accepted as full papers and 19 as short communication and poster papers after review. As expected, a significant number of papers were related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Providing a state-of-the-art overview of biomedical and health informatics, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field of healthcare, researchers and practitioners alike

The European Federation for Medical Informatics has established itself as a regional body coordinating activity in medical informatics. The Congress in Toulouse, MIE-81, from 9 - 13 March 1981, is the third congress in the ser ies following MIE-78 in Cambr idge, and MIB-79 in Berlin with a gap during 1980 for the world congress MEDINFO-80 in Tokyo. The rationale behind all these congresses is the scientific need to share results and ideas and the educational need to train a wide variety of professional staff in the potential of health care and medical informatics.
