A partir des années 60, l'accouchement "sous X" sembla la manière la plus "pratique" pour permettre des adoptions "plénières" fondées sur le mensonge et le mimétisme de la filiation biologique, au mépris des droits de l'enfant et de la mère naturelle.

En février 2003, la Cour européenne des droits de l'homme a approuvé la législation française maintenant la possibilité de l'anonymat. Aux côtés des familles recomposées ou de l'homoparentalité, la question de l'accouchement "sous X" participe désormais à la problématique relative à l'évolution de la parentalité. Michel Cahen est chercheur au CNRS au Centre d'étude d'Afrique noire de l'Institut d'études poltiiques de Bordeaux. Outre ses travaux sur l'histoire contemporaine des pays lusophones, il s'intéresse aux faits de conscience identitaire : l'ethnicité, les identités sociales et politiques et enfin l'identité personnelle.
