"De ente et essentia" es un opúsculo que Santo Tomás escribió antes de cumplir treinta años. En él muestra en trazos concisos y directos los más importantes conceptos de su metafísica. Un preámbulo, un corto capítulo para definir algunos términos, un apartado para tratar de las sustancias y otro para tratar de los accidentes, componen un total de doce páginas en la edición citada. Esas pocas páginas son un compendio de la realidad entera, incluyendo el universo material, los ángeles y Dios. Fue compuesto socaire del aristotelismo griego y árabe que sirvió para abrir paso a una revolución filosófica por parte de quien no tenía otra intención que ser fiel a su propia tradición filosófica y teológica y estaba queriendo entenderla. Un joven dominico, meditari intra se jam incipiens taciturnus, estaba ya recogiendo los frutos de Roma, Grecia y el Islam, y los estaba utilizando para componer una síntesis de argumentaciones bien trabadas y visibles, donde cada elemento sustentaba a otro y éste al siguiente, etc., como las catedrales góticas del momento.Después, sobre todo en las dos Summae, habría de desarrollar las ideas de este breve tratado, que gira por entero alrededor de los conceptos de esencia y existencia, con los que da cuenta de los diferentes grados de realidad y de lo que los caracteriza.
