The Original Portrayal of Mozart’s Don Giovanni offers an original reading of Mozart’s and Da Ponte’s opera Don Giovanni, using as a lens the portrayal of the title role by its creator, the baritone Luigi Bassi (1766–1825). Although Bassi was coached in the role by the composer himself, his portrayal has never been studied in depth before, and this book presents a large number of new sources (first- and second-hand accounts), which allows us to reconstruct his performance scene by scene. The book confronts Bassi’s portrayal with a study of the opera’s early German reception and performance history, demonstrating how Don Giovanni as we know it today was not only created by Mozart, Da Ponte and Luigi Bassi but also by the early German adapters, translators, critics and performers who turned the title character into the arrogant and violent villain we still encounter in most of today’s stage productions. Incorporating discussion of dramaturgical thinking of the late Enlightenment and the difficult moral problems that the opera raises, this is an important study for scholars and researchers from opera studies, theatre and performance studies, music history as well as conductors, directors and singers.

Die internationale Kunstliteratur hat sich in den sechziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts grundlegend gewandelt. Die Topoi der Kunstkritik, die Paradigmen der Kunsttheorie, die Hintergrundannahmen der Kunstgeschichtsschreibung weisen in diesem turbulenten Jahrzehnt gemeinsame Verschiebungen auf, die neue Theorien, Kunstbegriffe und Vokabulare hervorbrachten. Von diesen diskursiven Veränderungen innerhalb der Texte, die die Werke in den sechziger Jahren kommentierend begleiten, handelt die vorliegende Untersuchung. Ein leitender Aspekt ist die Wesensbestimmung der Kunst, die die analytische Ästhetik als Essentialismus bezeichnet. Essentialistische Kunsttheorien teilen die Auffassung, dass den Gegenständen, die unter den Begriff Kunst bzw. Kunstwerk fallen, bestimmte Eigenschaften gemein sind. Eben diese Auffassung gilt innerhalb der Kunstliteratur der sechziger Jahre als besonders problematisch. Das Ziel dieser Studie ist es, den Konflikt zwischen Essentialismus und Anti-Essentialismus in der Kunstliteratur dieser Zeit ausführlich zu ergründen. Gegenstand sind dabei nicht die Werke, sondern die einschlägigen Quellentexte, also die Kunstkommentare, vorwiegend aus Deutschland, Italien, Frankreich und den USA. Überraschendes Ergebnis der Untersuchung ist, dass die kunsttheoretischen Konzepte sich nur selten passgenau mit den zeitgenössisch postulierten Merkmalen der künstlerischen Phänomene und Praktiken zur Deckung bringen lassen. Kunstkommentare führen gegenüber den Werken ein Eigenleben, das in den sechziger Jahren die Konkurrenz um neue Normen besonders auffällig bestimmt.

How should firms decide whether and when to invest in new capital equipment, additions to their workforce, or the development of new products? Why have traditional economic models of investment failed to explain the behavior of investment spending in the United States and other countries? In this book, Avinash Dixit and Robert Pindyck provide the first detailed exposition of a new theoretical approach to the capital investment decisions of firms, stressing the irreversibility of most investment decisions, and the ongoing uncertainty of the economic environment in which these decisions are made. In so doing, they answer important questions about investment decisions and the behavior of investment spending. This new approach to investment recognizes the option value of waiting for better (but never complete) information. It exploits an analogy with the theory of options in financial markets, which permits a much richer dynamic framework than was possible with the traditional theory of investment. The authors present the new theory in a clear and systematic way, and consolidate, synthesize, and extend the various strands of research that have come out of the theory. Their book shows the importance of the theory for understanding investment behavior of firms; develops the implications of this theory for industry dynamics and for government policy concerning investment; and shows how the theory can be applied to specific industries and to a wide variety of business problems.
