This textbook provides a comprehensive overview on the diverse strategies invertebrate animals have developed for nitrogen excretion and maintenance of acid-base balance and summarizes the most recent findings in the field, obtained by state-of-the-art methodology. A broad range of terrestrial, freshwater and marine invertebrate groups are covered, including crustaceans, cephalopods, insects and worms. In addition the impact of current and future changes in ocean acidification on marine invertebrates due to anthropogenic CO2 release will be analyzed. The book addresses graduate students and young researchers interested in general animal physiology, comparative physiology and marine/aquatic animal physiology. Also it is an essential source for researchers dealing with the effects of increasing pCO2 levels on aquatic animals, of which the vast majority are indeed invertebrates. All chapters are peer-reviewed.

Although the basic evolutionary patterns of nitrogen metabolism and excretion have been outlined for decades, there has been a resurgence of research activity in the past 15 years. Research in nitrogen metabolism has been stimulated in the area of acid-base balance. The molecular revolution has had an impact on the field as well, and recent studies on nitrogen metabolism and excretion now almost routinely use the tools of molecular biology. Of special interest are recent studies of evolutionary relationships between proteins of nitrogen metabolism. Nitrogen Metabolism and Excretion updates the reader on progress being made in this subject, offering an exciting integration of traditional topics and discussions on the most recent issues which have not yet appeared in other textbooks or references. The book features chapters on the latest developments in nitrogen metabolism and excretion from 28 prominent researchers from all over the world. Each chapter is detailed and specific, filled with useful concepts and techniques. The scope of the book is broad and diverse, covering groups from invertebrates to mammals, and subjects from nitrogen in oceanic buoyancy regulation to molecular mechanisms of nitric oxide synthesis. The text provides a phylogenetic view of various animal groups and presents much new information intended to break down phylogenetic stereotypes. The general areas of development, maternal-fetal interactions, protein turnover, carbamoyl phosphate synthesis, nitric oxide, and nitrates and nitrites are also covered in depth. This volume is the first in a new series that brings about a modern synthesis of areas of animal physiology. Nitrogen Metabolism and Excretion benefits both established researchers interested in nitrogen and advanced undergraduate and graduate students who want to investigate the most current and exciting questions being studied and debated.

Ecophysiology of the Green Shore Crab (Carcinus maenas) and Related Species: Mechanisms Behind the Success of a Global Invader provides an in-depth perspective of this devastatingly invasive coastal species. During the last 175 years, Carcinus maenas has spread around the globe by human activities. Because of its ability to flourish in a wide variety of ecosystems and outcompete native species it has been listed as one of the top 100 worst global invaders. Written by international experts, this book focuses on Carcinus maenas and discusses other brachyurans with similar physiologies as comparisons, including control systems and mechanisms used. This book serves as a valuable resource for researchers in marine biology and invasive biology, as well as for university lecturers, government or environmental agencies. Gathers all information on ecological physiology of this important species into one place Discusses how this one species of crab has managed to be spread around the globe and survive in many different environments Features a chapter by First Nations members on how this species may impact indigenous fisheries and culture

This new 3-volume set provides informative reviews on the physiology of sponges, cnidarians, round and flat worms, annelids, echinoderms, and crustaceans, advancing our knowledge of the physiology of these major invertebrate groups (Phyla). Invertebrates exhibit the largest number of species and occupy virtually every conceivable ecological niche. They are economically important in food chains, they recycle organic waste, and they are crucial pollinators of plants and sources of food. They are also medically relevant as parasites that cause major diseases in both humans and livestock. Volume 1 looks at non-Bilaterians (sponges, cnidarians, placozoans). The focus on sponge biology has recently been on symbiosis, nutrient uptake, and sensory biology. The section on cnidarians covers biomineralization, the nervous system, and development. The biology of placozoans is described in depth, including the role of neuropeptides in feeding. Volume 2 and covers crustacean physiology and diverse physiological topics, ranging from molting, respiration, water balance, biomineralization, bioreceptors, and temperature regulation to the land adaptation of terrestrial crustaceans. Echinoderms and annelids are covered in Volume 3.

Origin And Evolution Of Metazoan Cell Types written by Sally Leys and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-23 with Nature categories.

The evolution of animal diversity is strongly affected by the origin of novel cell and tissue types and their interactions with each other. Understanding the evolution of cell types will shed light on the evolution of novel structures, and in turn highlight how animals diversified. Several cell types may also have been lost as animals simplified – for example did sponges have nerves and lose them? This book reveals the interplay between gains and losses and provides readers with a better grasp of the evolutionary history of cell types. In addition, the book illustrates how new cell types allow a better understanding permitting the discrimination between convergence and homology.

The increasing use and the continuous development of pesticides are required to maintain sufficient global food production. The pesticide residues and their biotic and abiotic breakdown products may be harmful to the environment and may leach into waterways, thus it is crucial that the interactions of pesticides with microorganisms are deeply understood at all levels. Pesticides reach the soil via direct and indirect routes. The fate of the pesticides in the soil is affected by chemical, physical and microbiological factors. Microbial degradation of pesticides in soil is possible owing to the diverse metabolic capabilities of the microorganisms present, thus indigenous microbes act as biocatalysts for the remediation of the pesticides from the environment. The research topic will cover novel insights into microbial pesticide degradation with specific attention to the microbe-pesticide interactions in soil. To date researchers have focused on the degradation of pesticides using indigenous microbes with different degradation rate. There is scant information about the degradation intermediates, metabolic pathways, enzymes and complete set of factors involved into the microbes inhabiting into the pesticides contaminated soil. Therefore this Research Topic aims to contribute to the understanding of the role of microbes in pesticide degradation in soil. Since pesticide exposure may result in stress responses in the microbial population of the soil, there is also a need to know about the impact of pesticides on the microbial cell structure, membrane transporters, cellular content, metabolic pathways and gene expression. We are interested in reports of novel metabolic pathways, expression of the key genes in response to pesticide exposure and the changes in microbial physiology caused by pesticide exposure. The removal of the pesticides from the soil requires smart microbial methods that can reduce the pesticides concentration in a short time. The development of the smart bioremediation methods includes the direct application of the potential screened microbial strains and their enzymes. The immobilized microbial strains and their enzymes can be used for the rapid removal of the toxic pesticides from the soil environment. In addition, engineering of the microbial consortia can be developed as the potential smart bioremediation tool. Papers on single isolates or microbial communities are welcome as are reports of novel genes, enzymes or metabolites that might be used as markers of soil contamination. We would especially welcome manuscripts describing the application and development of smart soil bioremediation approaches that could be beneficial for the treatment of large scale contaminated agricultural and industrial soils. The research topic is of immediate interest to scientists and policy-makers and Frontiers in Microbiology is an ideal forum for a collection of novel, high-impact reports. The following themes are welcomes but not limited to: • Novel advancements into the microbe-pesticide interactions to clean the pesticide contaminated soil • High throughput screening of the potential bacterial, fungi and algae strains for the removal of pesticides from the contaminated soil • Smart soil bioremediation using indigenous microbial cultures and their purified enzymes • Microbial enzymes a smart tool for bioremediation of the soil • Engineering of the microbial consortia for the complete pesticides removal and resource recovery
