Zbornik prinaša prispevke mednarodne konference, ki je rezultat aplikativnega projekta Mapiranje urbanih prostorov slovenskih mest v zgodovinskem okviru: Nova Gorica in njeni konteksti (L6-8262), ki ga financirajo ARRS, Mestna občina Nova Gorica in SAZU. Prispevki v zborniku na primerih mest, ki so bila v 20. stoletju na novo zgrajena na področju Sovjetske zveze, Nemčije, Italije, Baltskih držav, Irana in Slovenije, kritično presojajo Atensko listino, ki je na 4. kongresu CIAM-a (Congrès internationaux d'architecture moderne) leta 1933 utemeljila načela funkcionalističnega mesta, v ospredje razmislekov pa zbornik postavlja Novo Gorico. Prispevki so razvrščeni v sedem tematskih sklopov, ki naslavljajo vrsto do sedaj redko tematiziranih vidikov: nastanek in utemeljitev funkcionalističnega mesta, središče funkcionalističnih novih mest in identiteta mesta, enoličnost ali raznolikost modernistične stanovanjske arhitekture, pozabljena in propadajoča industrijska dediščina, sakralna arhitektura v novih funkcionalističnih mestih, spomeniki v javnem prostoru modernističnih mest, mapiranje in vizualizacija mestnega prostora.

Anti-Fascism and Ethnic Minorities explores how, and to what extent, fascist ultranationalism elicited an anti-fascist response among ethnic minority communities in Eastern and Central Europe. The edited volume analyses how identities related to class, ethnicity, gender and political ideologies were negotiated within and between minorities through confrontations with domestic and international fascism. By developing and expanding the study of Jewish anti-fascism and resistance to other minority responses, the book opens the field of anti-fascism studies for a broader comparative approach. The volume is thematically located in Central and Eastern Europe, cutting right across the continent from Finland in the North to Albania in the Southeast. The case studies in the fourteen research chapters are divided into five thematic sections, dealing with the issues of 1) minorities in borderlands and cross-border antifascism, 2) minorities navigating the ideological squeeze between communism and fascism, 3) the role of intellectuals in the defence of minority rights, 4) the anti-fascist resistance against fascist and Nazi occupation during World War II, as well as 5) the conflictual role ascribed to ethnicity in post-war memory politics and commemorations. The editors describe their intersectional approach to the analysis of ethnicity as a crucial category of analysis with regard to anti-fascist histories and memories. The book offers scholars and students valuable historical and comparative perspectives on minority studies, Jewish studies, borderland studies, and memory studies. A true story of vendetta and intrigue, triumph and tragedy, exile and repatriation, this book recounts the interwoven microhistories of Count Girolamo Della Torre, a feudal lord with a castle and other properties in the Friuli, and Giulia Bembo, grand-niece of Cardinal Pietro Bembo and daughter of Gian Matteo Bembo, a powerful Venetian senator with a distinguished career in service to the Venetian Republic. Their marriage in the mid-sixteenth century might be regarded as emblematic of the Venetian experience, with the metropole at the center of a fragmented empire: a Terraferma nobleman and the daughter of a Venetian senator, who raised their family in far off Crete in the stato da mar, in Venice itself, and in the Friuli and the Veneto in the stato da terra. The fortunes and misfortunes of the nine surviving Della Torre children and their descendants, tracked through the end of the Republic in 1797, are likewise emblematic of a change in feudal culture from clan solidarity to individualism and intrafamily strife, and ultimately, redemption. Despite the efforts by both the Della Torre and the Bembo families to preserve the patrimony through a succession of male heirs, the last survivor in the paternal bloodline of each was a daughter.
