This is a collection of paintings compiled by Ninghui Xiong himself, chronicling his creation of painting music project for over two decades. It includes his paintings, research papers, creative tools, process records, and applications. This edited volume is the first publication to tackle the issue of researching human-technology relations from a methodological postphenomenological perspective. While the ‘traditional’ phenomenology of the 20th century, with figures like Husserl, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, provided valuable insights into the formal structures of essence, being and embodiment, etc. their mode of philosophizing mostly involved abstract ‘pure’ thinking. Although rooted in this tradition, the postphenomenological approach to the study of human-technology relations emphasizes the “empirical turn” and interdisciplinary work in the field of philosophy – and reaches out to other disciplines like anthropology, education, media studies, and science and technology studies (STS). The contributors discuss what it means for the field of postphenomenology to be empirically based and what kind of methodology is required in order for researchers to go out and study human-technology relations in this perspective. In many disciplines, methodology refers to the analytical approach taken – e.g. the analytical concepts you employ to make an analysis; in postphenomenology, these might include concepts such as multistability, variation, or mediation. In a discipline like anthropology, it also refers to reflections over the methods researchers use to approach an empirical field. Methods can include interviews of different kinds, participant observations, surveys, and auto-ethnography. Furthermore, methodology can include ethical issues tied to doing research in an empirical field. These practical aspects are not separate from, but rather connected to, theoretical approaches. This book ties together the methods, ethics, and theories of postphenomenology in a groundbreaking volume on methodology. With postphenomenological studies of education, digital media, biohacking, health, robotics, and skateboarding as points of reference, the authors of this volume, in twelve chapters, provide new perspectives on what a comprehensive postphenomenological research methodology must consist of.

Este libro quiere proporcionar una imagen actualizada de los conocimientos adquiridos en dos siglos de estudio, desde comienzos del siglo XIX hasta hoy, sobre la sinestesia. Está dirigido a los estudiosos, a los estudiantes de universidad y a conservatorios, a los que, incluso en contextos disciplinares diferentes, quieren descubrir los orígenes históricos de la sinestesia, las explicaciones neuroscientíficas, o experimentar con sus posibles aplicaciones en el lenguaje, las artes y el diseño. En los últimos años las publicaciones científicas sobre el tema se han multiplicado exponencialmente, a ésto también han contribuido algunas iniciativas internacionales, como son congresos organizados por ASA (American Synesthesia Association) a partir del 1999, las conferencias internacionales organizadas por el Medical School de Hannover del 2003, las conferencias anuales organizadas por UK Synaesthesia Association del 2005, y en particular, creemos, de las conferencias de Sinestesia: Ciencia y Arte que desde el 2005 la Fundación Internacoinal Artecittà, con sede en Cuevas del Almanzora, Almería, y delegación en Granada (España), pero de ámbito nacional español, organiza cada dos años. Recordando la primera de éstas conferencias – que tuvo lugar en Cuevas del Almanzora, Almería, en el 2005 – recogió un pequeño grupo de estudiosos, entre los que cerca de la mitad son autores que han participado en la escritura de este libro, y que se ha consolidado en el tiempo. Este volumen llega a propósito del IV Congreso Internacional de Sinestesia: Ciencias y Arte (Universidad de Almería) 2012 – que sigue al II (2007) y al III (2009), ambas tuvieron lugar en Granada – organizados por la Fundación Internacional Artecittà con la colaboración del Politecnico di Milano y la Universidad de Granada. Alrededor de estas conferencias se ha formado un pequeño, pero grande y vivaz, comunidad científica, recordando la primera conferencia del 2005, participaron 15 conferenciantes, en la IV edición del 2012 son cerca de 40. El conjunto de estas iniciativas, unido al desarrollo de los estudios en neurociencia, ha alimentado un debate internacional muy vivaz y productivo tanto que, también para los estudiosos que se ocupan ya desde hace años del tema, el control del saber sobre las sinestesias se ha puesto cada vez más arduo. Los autores de este volumen, todos, han participado al menos en una de las ediciones de Sinestesia: Ciencias y Arte, y estamos particularmente orgullosas de haber logrado recoger contribuciones internacionales de estudiosos entre los más acreditados. El libro está organizado en dos partes: 1 la primera parte contiene algunas contribuciones fundacionales, la línea de desarrollo que proporciona un marco histórico y teórico de referencia; 2 la segunda parte recoge el estado de los conocimientos sobre la sinestesia en algunos contextos disciplinarios específicos, de la neurología, de la psicología experimental, de la lingüística, de las artes, del diseño. Hubo otros de gran interés, por ejemplo, la música, lo que se propone incluir en una futura edición. Cada capítulo es completado por una extensa bibliografía, el lector notará que algunos textos son recurrentes independientemente del enfoque disciplinario, otros son en cambio específicos. Deseamos dar las gracias a todos los autores por haber participado con entusiasmo en este proyecto, hacemos notar la procedencia nacional europea y extraeuropea de los autores, y que somos particularmente honradas y felices de haber logrado recogerlos aquí. 800 km östlich von Moskau in Kazan’, Tatarstan, wurde 1962 ein weltweit einzigartiges Forschungsinstitut gegründet, das unter dem Oberbegriff der Synästhesie in künstlerischer, ästhetischer, technischer, pädagogischer und psychologischer Hinsicht die Wechselbeziehungen der Künste erforscht. Die Visualisierung von Musik stand dabei im Mittelpunkt. Zwischen 1967 und 2015 fanden 18 Kongresse statt, die im Westen fast unbekannt sind. 1212 Artikel sind in den Kongressberichten enthalten, die die immense Vielfalt der Aktivitäten dieses Instituts verdeutlichen und in dieser Monographie erstmals dokumentiert sind. Ein Namens- und Sachindex erleichtert die Suche, eine detaillierte Einleitung mit zahlreichen Abbildungen erläutert die Geschichte des Instituts. Jörg Jewanski promovierte 1996 in Musikwissenschaft mit einer Studie über Farbe-Ton-Theorien und veröffentlicht seitdem zur Visualisierung von Musik und zur Geschichte der Synästhesieforschung. Aktuell leitet er an der Universität Wien ein vom österreichischen Wissenschaftsfond FWF (Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung) finanziertes Forschungsprogramm zur Geschichte des Farbenhörens. Rustem Sakhabiev lernte Querflöte an der Musikschule seiner Heimatstadt Kazan’. Nach dem Besuch der Musikfachschule in Moskau studierte er an der Musikhochschule Münster und erlangte dort 2012 einen Master of Music. Im gleichen Jahr besuchte er den Synästhesiekongress in Kazan’, ist seitdem mit dem dortigen Institut verbunden und veröffentlichte mehrere Artikel zur Synästhesieforschung in Russland. Anastasija Maksimova studierte Geschichte und Philologie an den Universitäten in Kazan‘ und in Mainz, wo sie 2000 promovierte. Seit 2009 ist sie die Leiterin des Prometheus-Centers in Kazan‘, präsentierte die Aktivitäten des Centers auf Festivals in Moskau, Karlsruhe sowie Paris und leitete 2010, 2012 und 2015 die Synästhesiekongresse in Kazan‘.

This book aims to present a summary of research approaches developed, and even current, on two of the themes that since the 1980s aroused my interest, as an artist with synaesthesia, engraving and stamping systems, painter and video artist, but mainly as a researcher teacher at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Granada from the 2007/08 academic year, applying the concept of synaesthesia and ideaetheia in my teaching, to enhance creative abilities (teaching innovation projects and experimental workshops), as well as the survey path about possible synesthetes among university students, started in the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the University of Granada in 2006, Faculty of Psychology of the University of Granada, and in other Educational Centers and Universities of Spain (they are still being carried out at present) . Research projects whose approaches have been revised, sometimes continuously redesigned. The results and conclusions have been disseminated in specialized editions and also in other countries, since 2005, through articles and participation in international congresses, which have aroused interest in other national and international teachers. Reason why I also decided to publish this book, so that it serves as support to other educational researchers who want to apply the resources created for research on synesthesia, and innovative educational methods The work was presented in the year 2017 in the University of Granada for the defense of my position of University Holder. Il n'a pas été suffisamment souligné jusqu'ici qu'Alfred Binet (1857-1911) a été l'un des principaux acteurs à la fin du XIXe siècle du premier âge d'or des études sur les phénomènes synesthésiques. La synesthésie « graphèmes-couleurs », qui demeure encore aujourd'hui la forme la plus répandue, conduit à la perception colorée des sons, des lettres ou des nombres. Au cours du XIXe siècle, cette forme de synesthésie a été désignée sous l'expression « audition colorée ». Attiré par l'étude des phénomènes extraordinaires, c'est sous ce terme que Binet va s'engager au début des années 1890, avec les membres du laboratoire de psychologie de la Sorbonne, dans des études théoriques et expérimentales sur les phénomènes de synesthésie.
