Rivers In The Landscape written by Ellen Wohl and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-10 with Science categories.

Rivers are the great shapers of terrestrial landscapes. Very few points on Earth above sea level do not lie within a drainage basin. Even points distant from the nearest channel are likely to be influenced by that channel. Tectonic uplift raises rock thousands of meters above sea level. Precipitation falling on the uplifted terrain concentrates into channels that carry sediment downward to the oceans and influence the steepness of adjacent hill slopes by governing the rate at which the landscape incises. Rivers migrate laterally across lowlands, creating a complex topography of terraces, floodplain wetlands and channels. Subtle differences in elevation, grain size, and soil moisture across this topography control the movement of ground water and the distribution of plants and animals. Rivers in the Landscape, Second Edition, emphasizes general principles and conceptual models, as well as concrete examples of each topic drawn from the extensive literature on river process and form. The book is suitable for use as a course text or a general reference on rivers. Aimed at advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals looking for a concise summary of physical aspects of rivers, Rivers in the Landscape is designed to: emphasize the connectivity between rivers and the greater landscape by explicitly considering the interactions between rivers and tectonics, climate, biota, and human activities; provide a concise summary of the current state of knowledge for physical process and form in rivers; reflect the diversity of river environments, from mountainous, headwater channels to large, lowland, floodplain rivers and from the arctic to the tropics; reflect the diverse methods that scientists use to characterize and understand river process and form, including remote sensing, field measurements, physical experiments, and numerical simulations; reflect the increasing emphasis on quantification in fluvial geomorphology and the study of Earth surfaces in general; provide both an introduction to the classic, foundational papers on each topic, and a guide to the latest, particularly insightful and integrative references.

Who The Hell Is Alice My Story Alice Barry written by Alice Barry and has been published by Kings Road Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-04 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Her face is simply unmistakable as the council house based brothel madam, Lillian, in Channel 4's long running brilliant cult drama 'Shameless,' based on a Manchester sink estate. By her own admission not exactly the Bridget Bardot of the North West, she is fiercely and unapologetically proud of her working class roots and the many obstacles she has overcome in forging an acting career. In her long awaited autobiography she details her almost barbaric treatment as a youngster during her formative school years at the hands of bigoted bullies, both pupils and teachers alike. She describes how one day after being beaten for being a Catholic in the morning and beaten for being a protestant in the afternoon, she eventually fought back. It was a turning point in Alice's life. She became a rebel and beat one of the bullies so badly she ended up in hospital. Not surprisingly they never bothered her again. Who the Hell is Alice? is deep and personal, warts and all. The humour of Alice Barry shines like a beacon on every page but she also shares with the reader her real life tragedies such as the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of her brother Tommy and her husband Terry. Her current relationship with her partner Jeff is also well documented too. They love and respect each other, of that there is no doubt. The only slight twist in their magical bond is that Jeff is gay and their relationship is purely a plutonic one. Alice also takes the reader onto the set of Shameless. The long running Channel 4 show is quite simply a phenomenon and has been an on-going part of her life for over nine years. Alice talks at length about the entire team and her special relationship with Sally Carmen (Kelly Maguire) David Threlfall (Frank Gallagher) Jack Deam (Marty) and Elliott Tittensor (Carl Gallagher.)

Dams And Reservoirs Societies And Environment In The 21st Century written by Luis Berga and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-02-15 with Architecture categories.

Water resources stored by dams and reservoirs play an essential role in water resource management, hydropower and flood control. Where there is an extensive network of dam infrastructures, dams have made a major contribution to economic and social development, providing considerable storage capacity per capita. However, dams and reservoirs may also have an important social and environmental impact, and should be studied within the framework of integrated water resource management and sustainable development. Dams and Reservoirs, Societies and Environment in the 21st Century presents the latest research on the role played by dams and reservoirs in 21st century societies, in developed, emergent and developing countries. It analyses the viability of dams and suggests alternative solutions from a holistic perspective, considering the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects. Other issues covered include the social acceptability of dams, public involvement and dam awareness. The book covers subjects ranging from dam engineering, through the benefits and drawbacks of dams, to their social and environmental impact, and contains numerous case studies of the constructive contributions that reservoirs have made to water development and management. The book is a valuable resource for professional and dam engineers, water managers, governmental organizations and commercial enterprises responsible for dam development and management.

Nonstate Warfare written by Stephen Biddle and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-26 with Political Science categories.

How nonstate military strategies overturn traditional perspectives on warfare Since September 11th, 2001, armed nonstate actors have received increased attention and discussion from scholars, policymakers, and the military. Underlying debates about nonstate warfare and how it should be countered is one crucial assumption: that state and nonstate actors fight very differently. In Nonstate Warfare, Stephen Biddle upturns this distinction, arguing that there is actually nothing intrinsic separating state or nonstate military behavior. Through an in-depth look at nonstate military conduct, Biddle shows that many nonstate armies now fight more "conventionally" than many state armies, and that the internal politics of nonstate actors—their institutional maturity and wartime stakes rather than their material weapons or equipment—determines tactics and strategies. Biddle frames nonstate and state methods along a continuum, spanning Fabian-style irregular warfare to Napoleonic-style warfare involving massed armies, and he presents a systematic theory to explain any given nonstate actor’s position on this spectrum. Showing that most warfare for at least a century has kept to the blended middle of the spectrum, Biddle argues that material and tribal culture explanations for nonstate warfare methods do not adequately explain observed patterns of warmaking. Investigating a range of historical examples from Lebanon and Iraq to Somalia, Croatia, and the Vietcong, Biddle demonstrates that viewing state and nonstate warfighting as mutually exclusive can lead to errors in policy and scholarship. A comprehensive account of combat methods and military rationale, Nonstate Warfare offers a new understanding for wartime military behavior.
