Family Care International has put together this report summarizing specific areas of action and responsibility agreed upon at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development. The program of action is a blueprint for future planning, dialogue, and action. Each section of this summary report lists key chapter and paragraph references to the original program of action and fundamental bases, goals, and priority actions needed in the area of reproductive health and rights to achieve social justice, equity, and quality of life for all. The sections are specific areas of action. Enabling Conditions for Reproductive Health involves empowering women and promoting gender, equality and equity, eliminating discrimination against the girl child (e.g., female genital mutilation), ensuring male responsibilities and participation, and achieving universal education. The section entitled Affirming Reproductive Health and Reproductive Rights addresses defining reproductive health and reproductive rights and guiding principles. Championing Reproductive Health for All is the title of the next section. Its subtopics include achieving universal access, women's health and safe motherhood, sexual and reproductive health of adolescents, preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV, and addressing the AIDS pandemic. The section entitled Ensuring Coverage, Utilization, and Quality of Reproductive Health Services encompasses improving quality of care, service utilization and satisfaction, and training and program management and mobilizing public awareness and support. The last section, Mobilizing the Resources for Action, addresses advancing the contributions of technology, research and development, financing reproductive health, partners cooperating for development, and following up on commitments.

The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

Reproductive Health and Human Rights: The Way Forward critically reflects on the past fifteen years of international efforts aimed at improving health, alleviating poverty, diminishing gender inequality, and promoting human rights. The volume includes essays by leading scholars and practitioners that are centered on the 1994 United Nations International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and its resulting Programme of Action. ICPD, an agreement among 179 governments, UN agencies, and NGOs, was intended to shape population and development policy—reinterpreted and redefined as "reproductive health." More than a decade after the enthusiasm that accompanied ICPD, there is growing concern about its effectiveness in the context of global health and development. Reproductive Health and Human Rights addresses that concern. The book grapples with fundamental questions about the relationships among population, fertility decline, reproductive health, human rights, poverty alleviation, and development and assesses the various arguments—demographic, public health, human rights-based, and economic—for and against ICPD today. A number of the chapters address institutional challenges to ICPD and consider how the changing political, religious, academic, and disciplinary contexts matter. Other chapters engage operational and conceptual issues and whether ICPD has been able to move the reproductive health agenda forward on topics such as maternal mortality, abortion, HIV/AIDS, adolescents, reproductive technologies, and demography. Finally, several chapters examine how ICPD has been sidelined by emerging health and development agendas and what could be done in response. Unlike any book yet published, Reproductive Health and Human Rights: The Way Forward examines the state of the arguments for reproductive health and rights from a multidisciplinary perspective that provides policymakers, scholars, and activists with a better understanding of how reproductive health and rights have developed, their place in the global policy agenda, and how they might evolve most effectively in the future.

The impending demands of adulthood make adolescence a time of intensive preparation. Success depends greatly on the health care and basic education provided during these fleeting years. For young women, greater control over sexuality and reproduction may benefit every social and economic aspect of their lives. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) responds to adolescents in the context of their overall life situation, supporting activities that address their holistic well-being and help achieve their full potential. UNFPA recognizes that young people's education, health and life opportunities will determine the world's economic and social prospects in the 21st century.

On Infertile Ground written by Jade S. Sasser and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-13 with Social Science categories.

A critique of population control narratives reproduced by international development actors in the 21st century Since the turn of the millennium, American media, scientists, and environmental activists have insisted that the global population crisis is “back”—and that the only way to avoid catastrophic climate change is to ensure women’s universal access to contraception. Did the population problem ever disappear? What is bringing it back—and why now? In On Infertile Ground, Jade S. Sasser explores how a small network of international development actors, including private donors, NGO program managers, scientists, and youth advocates, is bringing population back to the center of public environmental debate. While these narratives never disappeared, Sasser argues, histories of human rights abuses, racism, and a conservative backlash against abortion in the 1980s drove them underground—until now. Using interviews and case studies from a wide range of sites—from Silicon Valley foundation headquarters to youth advocacy trainings, the halls of Congress and an international climate change conference—Sasser demonstrates how population growth has been reframed as an urgent source of climate crisis and a unique opportunity to support women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights. Although well-intentioned—promoting positive action, women’s empowerment, and moral accountability to a global community—these groups also perpetuate the same myths about the sexuality and lack of virtue and control of women and the people of global south that have been debunked for decades. Unless the development community recognizes the pervasive repackaging of failed narratives, Sasser argues, true change and development progress will not be possible. On Infertile Ground presents a unique critique of international development that blends the study of feminism, environmentalism, and activism in a groundbreaking way. It will make any development professional take a second look at the ideals driving their work.
