Notre zone d'etude localisee dans la region de Matam est soumise au climat sahelien avec une vegetation de type arbustive, adaptee a la forte chaleur et au stress hydrique, avec une pluviometrie moyenne annuelle de 350mm/an. La communaute rurale de Loughere Thioly, sylvo-pastorale, est partie integrante du Ferlo. C'est un milieu quasi inaccessible surtout en saison des pluies, d'ou l'appellation ironique une terre abandonnee des dieux . C'est une zone en degradation avancee. Cette degradation du couvert vegetal entraine l'alteration toute entiere du milieu vivant. Il en resulte logiquement que si l'on conserve la vegetation, on conserve a la fois le sol, la faune et la vie humaine. La Grande Muraille Verte bien implantee dans cette zone s'est donnee pour mission de conserver, valoriser, restaurer le couvert vegetal afin de lutter contre l'avancee menacante du desert, manifestation clinique du changement climatique. Pays signataire du Protocole de Kyoto, le Senegal s'investit grandement dans la lutte pour l'attenuation et l'adaptation aux effets du changement climatique. Le pays s'ouvre par ailleurs au marche du carbone de par les nouveaux mecanismes de flexibilite comme le MDP."

La désertification est un phénomène mondial qui affecte près de la moitié de la surface de la planète, notamment en Afrique où 43 % des terres se trouvent dans des zones arides ou semi-arides. La lutte contre la désertification dans ces milieux constitue une des priorités majeures des États sahélo-sahariens du Circum-Sahara. L’ « Initiative africaine Grande Muraille Verte » (IAGMV) répond à ces enjeux via un ensemble d’actions destinées à assurer le développement socio-économique régional. Elle signe l’émergence d’un leadership de l’Afrique dans la prise en charge de ses défis environnementaux, à travers la gestion durable et la valorisation de l’important potentiel de développement des zones arides du continent. Malgré l’acquisition de connaissances scientifiques et techniques dans les domaines liés à la gestion durable des terres en zones arides, la majeure partie de ces données n’ont pas été capitalisées et diffusées, ce qui fragilise la mise en place des différentes politiques de lutte contre la désertification. Cet ouvrage a ainsi pour objectif de faire l’état des lieux des connaissances et initiatives sur la gestion des problématiques de la désertification. Il capitalise les résultats, les expériences, les techniques et autres données issues de la recherche scientifique, mais aussi des pratiques et des savoirs traditionnels acquis au cours des cinquante dernières années. Il propose les recommandations qui en découlent afin d’optimiser les stratégies et les performances des programmes et projets de l’ « Initiative Grande Muraille Verte ». Ce document entend soutenir une démarche de renforcement de la résilience des communautés rurales dans le contexte du programme de la Grande Muraille Verte et de la mise en oeuvre sur le terrain dela restauration des terres. Son propos est d’appuyer, d’une part, les actions sur le terrain, et, d’autre part, la réalisation d’évaluations socioéconomiques, tirant principalement parti de cinq années d'expérience acquise dans le cadre du projet de la FAO «Action Contre la Désertification» (ACD). La première partie de la publication est un manuel pratique expressément conçu pour les acteurs de terrain, les partenaires, les organisations non gouvernementales et les organisations communautaires. Son objectif est de guider la mise en oeuvre des opérations de restauration des terres degradées à grande échelle, tout en fournissant des instructions concrètes détaillées, tirées des exemples de réussite d’ACD. Cette démarche consiste à coupler sur de grandes surfaces la plantation d’enrichissement, au moyen d’espèces ligneuses et herbacées fourragères locales, et la préparation du sol pour améliorer sa perméabilité et sa rétention de l’eau de pluie. La seconde partie du manuel introduit une méthodologie pour les évaluations socioéconomiques. Cette approche facile d’emploi repose sur des enquêtes auprès des ménages et peut être utilisée par les experts pour suivre, estimer et évaluer les impacts socioéconomiques des interventions de restauration des terres à grande échelle. Les enquêtes auprès des ménages ne servent pas uniquement à mener des études d’impact mais aussi à mieux concevoir une intervention de restauration des terres.

Although the main focus of this book is on the estuaries, its scope goes well beyond this particular coastal feature. Indeed, the estuary can only be considered as part of the life cycle of the entire river and the marine area it feeds into: an area particularly subject to human and natural pressures. The main estuaries and deltas of West and Central Africa region provide a variety of goods and services to its coastal population. The most important of them are related to critical fish habitat, wood and charcoal from mangroves, as well as space for agriculture, aquaculture, urban development, tourism and transport. Particular emphasis has been made in this book on mangroves that play a significant role in terms of flood control, groundwater replenishment, coastline stabilization and protection against storms. They also retain sediments and nutrients, purify water, and provide critical carbon storage. Such hydrological and ecological functions explain the focus on serving mangrove ecosystems and the nearby communities, which draw significant income from fishing, rice production, tourism, salt extraction and other activities such as harvesting honey and medicinal plants, hence the need for preserving mangrove ecosystems to ensure sustainability of the estuaries and deltas of West and Central Africa region. The book has a foreword by Mr. Achim Steiner, United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UNEP who is stating that credible and up-to-date information is essential for the public at large but more specifically for scientists, researchers, managers, decision-makers all working together in order to safeguard, protect and sustainably manage estuaries, deltas and lagoons, and the coastal and ocean waters of Western and Central Africa.

This book provides a quantitative analysis of the role of woody plants in semi-arid regions, for the aSSessment of their benefits in agrosylvopastoralland-use systems with productive and sus tainability objectives. The insights presented and conclusions drawn allow the additional benefits of woody plants for specific climatic and physical site conditions and land-use systems to be estimated. The Sahel and Sudan zones in West Africa, on which the book focusses, represent resource-poor conditions, whose ecological dynamics have been relatively well studied. The role of woody plants in this region, as assessed in this book, is extrapolated to other semi-arid regions, leading to general conclusions on agroforestry's potential as an option for sustainable land use in semi-arid regions. The origins of this book go back to 1982, when the Club du Sahel requested that available data on woody plants in the Sahel region be synthesised, to provide basic information to enable better attention to be given to woody plants in rural development programmes. We are grateful to the Club du Sahel for this challenge. Various people contributed to studies used in this book. The preliminary inventory of the data available was made by Frits Ohler; later his work was continued by Franciska Dekker.

The mobilisation centred on the 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP 21) is an opportunity to highlight the vulnerability of environments and populations in the South in the face of climate warming. An argument that the perception of arid lands as wastelands is politically motivated and that these landscapes are variable, biodiverse ecosystems, whose inhabitants must be empowered. Deserts are commonly imagined as barren, defiled, worthless places, wastelands in need of development. This understanding has fueled extensive anti-desertification efforts—a multimillion-dollar global campaign driven by perceptions of a looming crisis. In this book, Diana Davis argues that estimates of desertification have been significantly exaggerated and that deserts and drylands—which constitute about 41% of the earth's landmass—are actually resilient and biodiverse environments in which a great many indigenous people have long lived sustainably. Meanwhile, contemporary arid lands development programs and anti-desertification efforts have met with little success. As Davis explains, these environments are not governed by the equilibrium ecological dynamics that apply in most other regions. Davis shows that our notion of the arid lands as wastelands derives largely from politically motivated Anglo-European colonial assumptions that these regions had been laid waste by “traditional” uses of the land. Unfortunately, such assumptions still frequently inform policy. Drawing on political ecology and environmental history, Davis traces changes in our understanding of deserts, from the benign views of the classical era to Christian associations of the desert with sinful activities to later (neo)colonial assumptions of destruction. She further explains how our thinking about deserts is problematically related to our conceptions of forests and desiccation. Davis concludes that a new understanding of the arid lands as healthy, natural, but variable ecosystems that do not necessarily need improvement or development will facilitate a more sustainable future for the world's magnificent drylands.
