Martin discovers Amelias plan and tries to disentangle her from his company and his life. He also realizes he still loves Jennifer and hopes to win her back and become a father to Alex. However, Amelia has different plans and connives to counter his plans. Also, by accident Jennifer encounters her Blue Ridge lover who wants to marry her and lay claim to Alex. Although she realizes she loves him, Jennifer is conflicted: should she follow her heart or not involve him in her current situation? Attempts on Alexs life, coupled with the realization of Martins company involvement in importing young Asian women for prostitution and gun running to Mexico brings chaos and death.

Is it ever right to lie? Does the Bible allow us to deceive? These are perennial questions that have been discussed and debated by theologians for centuries with little consensus. Entering this discussion, Just Deceivers provides a fresh analysis of thisimportant topic through a comprehensive examination of the motif of deception in the books of Samuel. While many studies have explored deception in other Old Testament texts-especially the patriarchal narratives of Genesis-and a few articles have initiated examination of this motif in Samuel, Just Deceivers builds upon this groundwork and offers an exhaustive treatment of this theme in an important portion of the Hebrew Bible. Newkirk takes the reader through the books of Samuel, investigating every occurrence of deception in the narrative and exploring how the author depicts these various acts of deception, and then synthesises the results to offer an exegetically based theology of deception. In so doing, this study both challenges commonly held views concerning the Bible's stance on falsehood and illustrates the importance of attending to the sophisticated literary character of biblical narrative.

The phrase "biblical deception" can be viewed as something of an oxymoron. While biblical law and wisdom literature both advocate truth and prohibit lying, many of the characters in biblical narrative commit acts of deception and yet are not evaluated negatively. Prior research on biblical deception has tended to assume an ethical stance not presented in the narrative texts. These previous studies have also not presented enough analytical data, and none of them focus on the books of Samuel and Kings, which include many examples of deception. A history of this previous research is provided in chapter 1. A new study was needed that did not operate out of any hermeneutic of morality. This study utilizes the psychological theories of Truth Default Theory (TDT) and Information Manipulation Theory (IMT2) as tools for biblical interpretation. These theories became a new way of reading acts of deception committed by characters as they are presented in Samuel-Kings. When acts of deceit are not viewed as ethical decisions made by the characters, they can then be read as a tactic of characters to attain a certain goal. In chapter two, an overview of these two theories is provided. The third chapter of the dissertation contains a catalogue and commentary of the 43 scenes in Samuel-Kings that feature an act of deception. In chapter 4, the content and context of the scenes are examined in order to demonstrate why characters needed to deceive. Chapter 5 discusses the specific trigger events in the text that warn the reader of possible deception activity. Chapter 6 describes the particular environments (scenes involving a prophet or prophecy) as well as sensitive information (scenes pertaining to an act of anointing) that repeatedly require a character to utilize the art of deception. In the final chapter, this new psychological reading of deception is used to submit a definition of "truth" in Samuel-Kings. This allows readers of Samuel-Kings an opportunity to determine what was most important to the characters of the narrative, but it also enables one to understand the ultimate truths of the given author, and why deception was necessary.

First full-length study of the use and perception of deceit in medieval warfare. Deception and trickery are a universal feature of warfare, from the Trojan horse to the inflatable tanks of the Second World War. The wars of the Central Middle Ages (c. 1000-1320) were no exception. This book looks at the various tricks reported in medieval chronicles, from the Normans feigning flight at the battle of Hastings (1066) to draw the English off Senlac Hill, to the Turks who infiltrated the Frankish camp at the Field of Blood (1119) disguised as bird sellers, to the Scottish camp followers descending on the field of Bannockburn (1314) waving laundry as banners to mimic a division of soldiers. This study also considers what contemporary society thought about deception on the battlefield: was it a legitimate way to fight? Was cunning considered an admirable quality in a warrior? Were the culturally and religious "other" thought to be more deceitful in war than Western Europeans? Through a detailed analysis of vocabulary and narrative devices, this book reveals a society with a profound moral ambivalence towards military deception, in which authors were able to celebrate a warrior's cunning while simultaneously condemning their enemies for similar acts of deceit. It also includes an appendix cataloguing over four hundred incidents of military deception as recorded in contemporary chronicle narratives.
