All patients arriving at hospital with chest pain suggestive of myocardial ischemia require an immediate 12-lead ECG and medical assessment. Management will depend on the type of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) diagnosed. 'Fast Facts: Acute Coronary Syndromes' is an international evidence-based primer that focuses on optimizing patient outcomes via accurate initial diagnosis, appropriate risk stratification and proper therapeutic decision-making in line with both American and European management guidelines. This refreshingly readable handbook simplifies the complexities involved in the care of patients with ACS by: • Familiarizing readers with the common pathophysiology underlying all ACS • Detailing the specifics of clinical assessment (targeted history, symptom-oriented physical exam, electrocardiography, cardiac biomarkers and imaging) • Assisting best practice in ischemic risk stratification and assessment of bleeding risk • Outlining coronary revascularization techniques, reperfusion strategies and preventive measures • Providing an update on potent antithrombotic therapy (antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants) • Clearly explaining the latest developments that are likely to be implemented in the near future. In this fast-changing field it is difficult for healthcare professionals to remain current and virtually impossible to fully understand all of the subtle nuances of the available clinical trial data. This comprehensive handbook is therefore the essential resource for all healthcare professionals looking for up-to-date, easy-to read information that will assist best practice in the identification and management of all patients with ACS. Contents: • Pathophysiology • Diagnosis • Risk stratification and decision-making • Coronary revascularization • Unstable angina/non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction • ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction • Secondary prevention of coronary artery disease • Developments • Useful resources

Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is a growing global menace with patients increasing in developing countries where tobacco and food play a major role. Its treatment guidelines and research results have proliferated in academia, but practical applications lag behind that research. This book addresses this void. Guidelines for treatment of ACS present in-depth reading for practicing cardiologists, thus preventing clinical application. The book aims to appraise readers of real-world situations and suggestions to help them acquire up-to-date knowledge on ACS and its effective diagnosis, prognosis and management. Key Features Covers recent advances in ACS management and pharmacotherapy Discusses the guidelines for treatment of ACS for the professional cardiologist to apply to clinical practice Explores the topics with the help of case scenarios Follows a concise, yet comprehensive approach Features a chapter on 'When to Transfer,' which discusses how to spot unstable patients or those heading towards shock

Acute Coronary Syndrome covers the spectrum of clinical conditions ranging from unstable angina to non-ST elevation myocardial infarction and ST elevation myocardial infarction. These life-threatening disorders are a major cause of emergency medical care, hospitalization and mortality. Management of Acute Coronary Syndromes is designed to provide busy clinicians with a comprehensive guide to the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of these syndromes. It encompasses the latest technologies, including the use of biomarkers and non-invasive imaging procedures. For each condition, the reader is taken through all of the therapeutic options available; in each case the indications and contraindications are evaluated in the light of the latest clinical trials. Potential complications are dealt with in a similar fashion, permitting the reader to anticipate and manage problems as they arise. The authors also present evidence-based recommendations for long-term care of at-risk patients, encompassing pharmacologic therapies and lifestyle management. The book concludes with a comprehensive collection of appendices that include treatment algorithms, risk scores and a summary of the latest management guidelines. Management of Acute Coronary Syndromes is the most up to date and comprehensive evidence-based guide to managing acute coronary syndromes, in a compact and usable format. It will be of interest to busy specialist physicians in cardiovascular medicine, cardiac and vascular surgery, and critical care, as well as primary care physicians and hospitalists who care for patients with these syndromes.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is the term for the clinical signs and symptoms of myocardial ischemia: unstable angina, non–ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Unstable angina and NSTEMI normally result from a partially or intermittently occluded coronary artery, whereas STEMI results from a fully occluded coronary artery. The patients present with a wide arena of signs and symptoms like chest pain, nausea/vomiting, exertional pain, palpitation, shortness of breath, fatigue, etc. Angina, or chest pain, continues to be recognized as the classic symptom of ACS. In unstable angina, chest pain normally occurs either at rest or with exertion and results in limited activity. Chest pain associated with NSTEMI is usually longer in duration and more severe than chest pain associated with unstable angina. The diagnosis of ACS is based on triad of clinical presentation, electrocardiography and cardiac biomarkers. Electrocardiography is the most important initial diagnostic procedure when doctors suspect an acute coronary syndrome. Findings on a 12-lead ECG help the practitioner to differentiate between myocardial ischemia, injury, and infarction, locate the affected area and assess related conduction abnormalities. But at the same front, the definition of unstable angina, NSTEMI and STEMI is based on the levels of cardiac biomarkers too. Acute coronary syndromes are medical emergencies that need prompt action. Half of deaths due to a heart attack occur in the first 3–4 hours after symptoms begin. The sooner treatment begins, the better the chances of survival. Anyone having symptoms that might indicate an acute coronary syndrome should obtain prompt medical attention. Management of ACS involves a spectrum of interventions. It encompasses cardiac monitoring, thrombolysis, antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulant therapy, reperfusion therapy and invasive investigation and revascularization therapy. Reperfusion therapy (percutaneous coronary intervention) mainly holds for the ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Prognosis of the ACS patients depends on the post-myocardial risk stratification. The main highlights of risk stratification are risk stratification scores, assessment of cardiac function and stress testing, and management.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a clinical condition in which there is a decreased blood flow in the coronary arteries. Thus, a part of the heart muscle fails to function properly and dies. The distinguishing feature of an acute coronary syndrome is chest pain radiating to the angle of the jaw or the left shoulder. It is often accompanied by nausea and sweating. ACS is associated with a set of three clinical manifestations- unstable angina, non ST elevation myocardial infarction and ST elevation myocardial infarction. An electrocardiogram is the first line of diagnosis that should be performed in case of acute chest pain. If the electrocardiogram indicates acute heart damage, the heart attack should be immediately addressed by performing angioplasty or thrombolysis. People presumed to have ACS are often prescribed aspirin, nitroglycerin or ticagrelor. This book contains some path-breaking studies in acute coronary syndrome. Also included in this book is a detailed explanation of the various diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in the management of acute coronary syndrome. The topics covered herein offer the readers new insights in this condition.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) refers to a group of symptoms attributed to obstruction of the coronary arteries with the most common symptom presented as chest pain. In this book, the authors discuss current research in the study of the symptoms, treatment and prevention of ACS. Topics include antiplatelet therapy in ACS and novel antiplatelet agents; ACS in patients with prior coronary artery bypass graft; the incidence, impact on morbidity and mortality on atypical presentation in ACS; statins use in acute coronary syndrome; dietary assessment and cardiovascular disease risk estimation scores; the importance of renal insufficiency in ischemic heart disease; the relationship between acute coronary syndrome and leukocyte count; and ischemic heart disease in the elderly.
