Adam von Bremen war ein deutscher Historiker und Geograph des elften Jahrhunderts. Die genauen Daten seiner Geburt und seines Todes sind unbekannt. Er schrieb die "Gesta Hammaburgensis Ecclesiae Pontificum", eine Geschichte der Hamburger Kirche und der christlichen Missionen im Norden von 788 bis 1072 n. Chr.. Es ist unsere wichtigste Wissensquelle über die Geschichte und Ethnographie der nördlichen Regionen vor dem dreizehnten Jahrhundert. Über das Leben des Autors ist wenig bekannt; er selbst gibt uns nur sehr spärliche Informationen. Die Vorrede zu seiner Geschichte unterzeichnet er lediglich mit seinem Anfangsbuchstaben A. Dass dies für Adam steht, wissen wir aus Helmolds Slawischer Chronik, die Adam eindeutig als Verfasser einer Geschichte der Hamburger Kirche bezeichnet. Dass er aus Sachsen, genauer gesagt aus Meißen, stammte, ist eine bloße Vermutung, die sich auf dialektische Spuren im Werk stützt. Sein Werk ist in vier Bücher unterteilt, von denen die ersten drei hauptsächlich historisch sind, während das letzte rein geographisch ist. Das erste Buch berichtet über die Bremer Kirche, ihre ersten Bischöfe und die Ausbreitung des Christentums im Norden. Das zweite Buch setzt diese Erzählung fort und befasst sich auch weitgehend mit den deutschen Angelegenheiten zwischen 940 und 1045. Es berichtet von den Kriegen, die die Deutschen gegen die Slawen und Skandinavier führten. Das dritte Buch ist den Taten des Erzbischofs Adalbert gewidmet. Das vierte Buch ist ein geographischer Anhang mit dem Titel "Descriptio insularum Aquilonis" und beschreibt die Länder und Inseln in den nördlichen Meeren. Es enthält die früheste Erwähnung Amerikas in einem geografischen Werk.
