Climate Impacts On Energy Systems written by Jane O. Ebinger and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Business & Economics categories.

"While the energy sector is a primary target of efforts to arrest and reverse the growth of greenhouse gas emissions and lower the carbon footprint of development, it is also expected to be increasingly affected by unavoidable climate consequences from the damage already induced in the biosphere. Energy services and resources, as well as seasonal demand, will be increasingly affected by changing trends, increasing variability, greater extremes and large inter-annual variations in climate parameters in some regions. All evidence suggests that adaptation is not an optional add-on but an essential reckoning on par with other business risks. Existing energy infrastructure, new infrastructure and future planning need to consider emerging climate conditions and impacts on design, construction, operation, and maintenance. Integrated risk-based planning processes will be critical to address the climate change impacts and harmonize actions within and across sectors. Also, awareness, knowledge, and capacity impede mainstreaming of climate adaptation into the energy sector. However, the formal knowledge base is still nascent?information needs are complex and to a certain extent regionally and sector specific. This report provides an up-to-date compendium of what is known about weather variability and projected climate trends and their impacts on energy service provision and demand. It discusses emerging practices and tools for managing these impacts and integrating climate considerations into planning processes and operational practices in an environment of uncertainty. It focuses on energy sector adaptation, rather than mitigation which is not discussed in this report. This report draws largely on available scientific and peer-reviewed literature in the public domain and takes the perspective of the developing world to the extent possible."

Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition is of increasing importance as greater efficiency and health benefits are sought in feed for animal production. Top scientists from around the world have collaborated in this book to exchange expertise and knowledge on the latest developments in the field. The topics range from tissue metabolism and regulation mechanisms to practical aspects of energy and protein nutrition and feeding. A better and deeper understanding of nutrient metabolism and nutrition can only be achieved by integrating the outcomes of scientists researching different aspects of this topic. In doing this practical outcomes are sought for the direct benefit of producers and consumers. Special topics such as the links between energy/protein metabolism and nutrition regarding food quality, nutrigenomics, environmental sustainability and animal welfare in relation to the topic are all explored. This book is a valuable resource to all researchers and industry professionals who concern themselves with animal nutrition.

If the Agreement’s goal - limit the global temperature increase below 2°C - is to be met, all financial flows need to shift dramatically and rapidly from current investment patterns to 2°C compatible pathways. This study analyses the roles Nordic actors might play in mobilizing finance flows internationally and outlines a roadmap that can guide joint Nordic action during the next five to ten years. While the roadmap covers components of “climate related ODA” and climate compatible contributions from the private sector, the focus of the roadmap lies on the crucial bridging and dialogue that is required between key actors. Building on identified Nordic strengths and areas needing accelerated international support, the report concludes with a set of immediate next steps to operationalize the roadmap in 2017-2018.

As world population increases, demand for food and particularly animal products is expected to grow substantially. Because of limited area for expansion of animal agriculture and growing consumer concern for the environmental impact of animal production, gains in animal efficiency will have to be part of the solution. This book addresses key issues of how energy and protein are utilized and interact in farm animals from the molecular to the whole animal and even to the herd or group level of organization. It contains state-of-the-art research and reviews on several topics of nutrient utilization and metabolism from top scientists worldwide. Key issues addressed include energy/protein interactions, methodology such as in vitro and in vivo techniques, regulation including pre-natal programming and endocrine regulation, modeling and systems biology (including a tribute to the late Professor R. Lee Baldwin of the University of California, Davis, a leader in the field), products and health of animals, tissue metabolism, and environmental sustainability in agriculture. This book is a valuable resource for researchers, students, policy makers, producers and industry professionals believing that a better understanding of metabolism and nutrition of farm animals is part of the solution.

The Proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Biochemistry of Exercise are centered on the effects of long lasting exercise and training. In the years following the first symposium which was held in Brussels in 1968, biochem istry of exercise has gained more importance in view of the increasing number of labora tories and scientific papers which are dealing with this field. From the topic of the first symposium - humoral modifications occurring during physical activity - our points of interest have been turned to a more limited area, namely long term exercise and training, It was important to investigate these subjects because everyone knows that in to-day's sport a good performance means hours of weekly or even daily training. Therefore, it was of considerable interest to stimulate discussions and to clarify ideas in this particular field of human activity. Our knowledge of biochemistry of exercise at the cellular level has highly progressed during the last five years. Researchers have focused their interests on the sequential uti lization of fuels, the adaptative responses of the enzyme machinery, the different types of muscle fibers. The topics of the Proceedings include: general subjects, metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, hormonal regulations, electrolytes, ultrastructure and fiber types of muscle, cellular enzymes. In the symposium, the current knowledge was summarized as an introductory lecture to each of these topics by prominent authors, namely: J. KEuL (Freiburg i. Br. ), M. ScHERRER (Bern), B. SAL TIN (Copenhagen), P.

Amphibian And Reptile Adaptations To The Environment written by Denis Vieira de Andrade and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-19 with Nature categories.

Despite their diversity, amphibians and reptiles share many physiological traits, such as their dependence on external heat sources for body temperature regulation, that are of pivotal importance to their ability to cope with the environment. Considerable variation in physiological capabilities exists in these groups and often can be related to seasonal and geographic differences in environmental parameters. This book provides a comprehensive and integrative view of the interplay between physiology and behavior in amphibians and reptiles, leading to a better understanding of the subject. The book covers topics that have recently been in the spotlight for scientific research on the physiology, behavior, and conservation of amphibians and reptiles. It brings together recent information from a range of disciplines that address critical topics for understanding their biology. As these studies are scattered across articles in specialized journals, this book provides a single and expanded source summarizing such advancements. Amphibian and Reptile Adaptations to the Environment: Interplay Between Physiology and Behavior maintains a solid scientific basis for the biological topics covered. However, it presents the material in a clear and direct manner so that it is accessible even to non-biologists interested in the basic biology, behavior, and ecology of these animals as well as how these elements are connected to their conservation.
