Adaptive Query Processing surveys the fundamental issues, techniques, costs, and benefits of adaptive query processing. It begins with a broad overview of the field, identifying the dimensions of adaptive techniques. It then looks at the spectrum of approaches available to adapt query execution at runtime - primarily in a non-streaming context. The emphasis is on simplifying and abstracting the key concepts of each technique, rather than reproducing the full details available in the papers. The authors identify the strengths and limitations of the different techniques, demonstrate when they are most useful, and suggest possible avenues of future research. Adaptive Query Processing serves as a valuable reference for students of databases, providing a thorough survey of the area. Database researchers will benefit from a more complete point of view, including a number of approaches which they may not have focused on within the scope of their own research.

Nowadays, many companies are migrating their applications and data to cloud service providers, mainly because of their ability to answer quickly to business requirements. Thereby, the performance is an important requirement for most customers when they wish to migrate their applications to the cloud. Therefore, in cloud environments, resources should be acquired and released automatically and quickly at runtime. Moreover, the users and service providers expect to get answers in time to ensure the service SLA (Service Level Agreement). Consequently, ensuring the QoS (Quality of Service) is a great challenge and it increases when we have large amounts of data to be manipulated in this environment. To resolve this kind of problems, several researches have been focused on shorter execution time using adaptive query processing and/or prediction of resources based on current system status. However, they present important limitations. For example, most of these works does not use monitoring during query execution and/or presents intrusive solutions, i.e. applied to the particular context. The aim of this book is to present the development of new solutions/strategies to efficient adaptive query processing on large databases available in a cloud environment. It must integrate adaptive re-optimization at query runtime and their costs are based on the SRT (Service Response Time – SLA QoS performance parameter). Finally, the proposed solution will be evaluated on large scale with large volume of data, machines and queries in a cloud computing infrastructure. Finally, this work also proposes a new model to estimate the SRT for different request types (database access requests). This model will allow the cloud service provider and its customers to establish an appropriate SLA relative to the expected performance of the services available in the cloud.

During the last years, the amount of RDF data has increased exponentially over the Web, exposed via SPARQL endpoints. These SPARQL endpoints allow users to direct SPARQL queries to the RDF data. Federated SPARQL query processing allows to query several of these RDF databases as if they were a single one, integrating the results from all of them. This is a key concept in the Web of Data and it is also a hot topic in the community. Besides of that, the W3C SPARQL-WG has standardized it in the new Recommendation SPARQL 1.1._x000D_ This book provides a formalisation of the W3C proposed recommendation. This formalisation allows to identify existing errors and allows to correct them before the implementation phase or when the execution of these federated queries start. The book constitutes a valuable resource for any implementer since it also proposes solutions to the problems identified as well as proposing a set of SPARQL pattern reordering rules, which reduce the execution time of federated queries significantly._x000D_ Another strong point of this book is the research methodology followed. It states clearly the problems in the state of the art, next defines the research hypothesis for next providing a thoroughly analysis of the semantics of the SPARQL 1.1 specification. Once the theoretical part is concluded the book steps into the implementation part, describing clearly the implementation decisions for finally evaluating the overall system.

This book is an anthology of the results of research and development in database query processing during the past decade. The relational model of data provided tremendous impetus for research into query processing. Since a relational query does not specify access paths to the stored data, the database management system (DBMS) must provide an intelligent query-processing subsystem which will evaluate a number of potentially efficient strategies for processing the query and select the one that optimizes a given performance measure. The degree of sophistication of this subsystem, often called the optimizer, critically affects the performance of the DBMS. Research into query processing thus started has taken off in several directions during the past decade. The emergence of research into distributed databases has enormously complicated the tasks of the optimizer. In a distributed environment, the database may be partitioned into horizontal or vertical fragments of relations. Replicas of the fragments may be stored in different sites of a network and even migrate to other sites. The measure of performance of a query in a distributed system must include the communication cost between sites. To minimize communication costs for-queries involving multiple relations across multiple sites, optimizers may also have to consider semi-join techniques.

In the last years, Linked Data initiatives have encouraged the publication of large graph-structured datasets using the Resource Description Framework (RDF). Due to the constant growth of RDF data on the web, more flexible data management infrastructures must be able to efficiently and effectively exploit the vast amount of knowledge accessible on the web. This book presents flexible query processing strategies over RDF graphs on the web using the SPARQL query language. In this work, we show how query engines can change plans on-the-fly with adaptive techniques to cope with unpredictable conditions and to reduce execution time. Furthermore, this work investigates the application of crowdsourcing in query processing, where engines are able to contact humans to enhance the quality of query answers. The theoretical and empirical results presented in this book indicate that flexible techniques allow for querying RDF data sources efficiently and effectively.
