Sparse grids have gained increasing interest in recent years for the numerical treatment of high-dimensional problems. Whereas classical numerical discretization schemes fail in more than three or four dimensions, sparse grids make it possible to overcome the “curse” of dimensionality to some degree, extending the number of dimensions that can be dealt with. This volume of LNCSE collects the papers from the proceedings of the second workshop on sparse grids and applications, demonstrating once again the importance of this numerical discretization scheme. The selected articles present recent advances on the numerical analysis of sparse grids as well as efficient data structures, and the range of applications extends to uncertainty quantification settings and clustering, to name but a few examples.

This book presents a collection of high-quality papers in applied and numerical mathematics, as well as approximation theory, all closely related to Wolfgang Dahmen’s scientific contributions. Compiled in honor of his 75th birthday, the papers are written by leading experts and cover topics including nonlinear approximation theory, numerical analysis of partial differential equations, learning theory, and electron microscopy. A unifying theme throughout the collection is the emphasis on a solid mathematical foundation, which serves as the basis for the most efficient numerical algorithms used to simulate complex phenomena.

75 Years Of Mathematics Of Computation written by Susanne C. Brenner and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-29 with Education categories.
The year 2018 marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of Mathematics of Computation, one of the four primary research journals published by the American Mathematical Society and the oldest research journal devoted to computational mathematics. To celebrate this milestone, the symposium “Celebrating 75 Years of Mathematics of Computation” was held from November 1–3, 2018, at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), Providence, Rhode Island. The sixteen papers in this volume, written by the symposium speakers and editors of the journal, include both survey articles and new contributions. On the discrete side, there are four papers covering topics in computational number theory and computational algebra. On the continuous side, there are twelve papers covering topics in machine learning, high dimensional approximations, nonlocal and fractional elliptic problems, gradient flows, hyperbolic conservation laws, Maxwell's equations, Stokes's equations, a posteriori error estimation, and iterative methods. Together they provide a snapshot of significant achievements in the past quarter century in computational mathematics and also in important current trends.

Extraction Of Quantifiable Information From Complex Systems written by Stephan Dahlke and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-13 with Mathematics categories.
In April 2007, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) approved the Priority Program 1324 “Mathematical Methods for Extracting Quantifiable Information from Complex Systems.” This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the most important results obtained over the course of the program. Mathematical models of complex systems provide the foundation for further technological developments in science, engineering and computational finance. Motivated by the trend toward steadily increasing computer power, ever more realistic models have been developed in recent years. These models have also become increasingly complex, and their numerical treatment poses serious challenges. Recent developments in mathematics suggest that, in the long run, much more powerful numerical solution strategies could be derived if the interconnections between the different fields of research were systematically exploited at a conceptual level. Accordingly, a deeper understanding of the mathematical foundations as well as the development of new and efficient numerical algorithms were among the main goals of this Priority Program. The treatment of high-dimensional systems is clearly one of the most challenging tasks in applied mathematics today. Since the problem of high-dimensionality appears in many fields of application, the above-mentioned synergy and cross-fertilization effects were expected to make a great impact. To be truly successful, the following issues had to be kept in mind: theoretical research and practical applications had to be developed hand in hand; moreover, it has proven necessary to combine different fields of mathematics, such as numerical analysis and computational stochastics. To keep the whole program sufficiently focused, we concentrated on specific but related fields of application that share common characteristics and as such, they allowed us to use closely related approaches.

Singular Phenomena And Scaling In Mathematical Models written by Michael Griebel and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-18 with Computers categories.
The book integrates theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and modeling approaches for the treatment of singular phenomena. The projects covered focus on actual applied problems, and develop qualitatively new and mathematically challenging methods for various problems from the natural sciences. Ranging from stochastic and geometric analysis over nonlinear analysis and modelling to numerical analysis and scientific computation, the book is divided into the three sections: A) Scaling limits of diffusion processes and singular spaces, B) Multiple scales in mathematical models of materials science and biology and C) Numerics for multiscale models and singular phenomena. Each section addresses the key aspects of multiple scales and model hierarchies, singularities and degeneracies, and scaling laws and self-similarity.

Analyticity And Sparsity In Uncertainty Quantification For Pdes With Gaussian Random Field Inputs written by Dinh Dũng and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-13 with Mathematics categories.
The present book develops the mathematical and numerical analysis of linear, elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with coefficients whose logarithms are modelled as Gaussian random fields (GRFs), in polygonal and polyhedral physical domains. Both, forward and Bayesian inverse PDE problems subject to GRF priors are considered. Adopting a pathwise, affine-parametric representation of the GRFs, turns the random PDEs into equivalent, countably-parametric, deterministic PDEs, with nonuniform ellipticity constants. A detailed sparsity analysis of Wiener-Hermite polynomial chaos expansions of the corresponding parametric PDE solution families by analytic continuation into the complex domain is developed, in corner- and edge-weighted function spaces on the physical domain. The presented Algorithms and results are relevant for the mathematical analysis of many approximation methods for PDEs with GRF inputs, such as model order reduction, neural network and tensor-formatted surrogates of parametric solution families. They are expected to impact computational uncertainty quantification subject to GRF models of uncertainty in PDEs, and are of interest for researchers and graduate students in both, applied and computational mathematics, as well as in computational science and engineering.
