This study investigates the impact of ChatGPT on students’ learning behaviors through a randomized controlled trial involving 60 undergraduate students. The experimental group used ChatGPT as a study aid, while the control group employed traditional methods. Results revealed that ChatGPT significantly increased cognitive engagement but also led to higher procrastination levels and a slight, non-significant decline in academic performance compared to the control group, which showed improved academic outcomes. These findings highlight the dual nature of AI tools in education, enhancing engagement while posing risks of maladaptive behaviors. The study proposes strategies like time management training and structured AI use to mitigate negative effects, contributing to the discourse on AI integration in higher education.
