The Clinician’s Manual and its accompanying workbook, I Believe in Me, Not OCB! are the first known manuals to combine cognitive behavioral therapy and applied behavior analysis to treat obsessive-compulsive behavior (OCB) in children and youth with autism. The Clinician’s Manual serves as a practical guide for therapists, beginning with chapters that explain the theoretical underpinnings of OCBs, adaptations for autism, and guidance on clinical and functional behavioral assessment that are key to administering the nine treatment sessions that follow. Our evidence-based treatment incorporates functional behavioral assessment, CBT skills training, caregiver coaching, and social skills activities in a nine-week progressive program. Caregiver and child report data inform progress throughout the program. Generalization and maintenance are promoted through weekly caregiver coaching modules. Treatment can be delivered in a group or individual format and focuses on reducing OCBs with the ultimate goal of increasing quality of life. The manual provides all clinician, child, and caregiver instructions as well as materials to implement functional behavior-based CBT with precision. These manuals are a vital resource for clinicians working with autistic children and youth and their families.

Behavior in Autism with Functional Behavior-based CBT. These are the rst known manuals to combine cognitive behavioral therapy and applied behavior analysis to treat obsessive compulsive behavior (OCB) in children and youth with autism. The Children’s Workbook goes hand in hand with the nine structured sessions outlined in the Clinician’s Manual. Each session has a visual schedule that indicates the order of events, and children mark the completion of each activity. As sessions progress, -exibility is encouraged by introducing new OCBs with individualized adaptations (e.g., use of visuals and attempting different coping techniques). Importantly, children can also track their progress over time with a stimulus map. The workbook contains hands-on exercises and a vital worksheet entitled Stepping It Up: Completing My Exposures where children specify coping techniques, exposure steps, and reinforcers given at home. When the nine sessions are complete, children are encouraged to refer to the Children’s Workbook as a review of CBT strategies that were successful during treatment and what to do when new OCBs arise, or old OCBs re-emerge.

Autism is an emerging area of basic and clinical research, and has only recently been recognized as a major topic in biomedical research. Approximately 1 in 150 children are diagnosed as autistic, so it is also an intense growth area in behavioral and educational treatments. Financial resources have begun to be raised for more comprehensive research and an increasing number of scientists are becoming involved in autism research. In many respects, autism has become a model for conducting translational research on a psychiatric disorder. This text provides a comprehensive summary of all current knowledge related to the behavioral, experiential, and biomedical features of the autism spectrum disorders including major behavioral and cognitive syndromology, common co-morbid conditions, neuropathology, neuroimmunology, and other neurological correlates such as seizures, allergy and immunology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, and epidemiology. Edited by three leading researchers, this volume contains over 80 chapters and nine shorter commentaries by thought leaders in the field, making the book a virtual "who's who" of autism research. This carefully developed book is a comprehensive and authoritative reference for what we know in this area as well as a guidepost for the next several years in all areas of autism research.
