Affecting one out of every 20 children and adolescents, ADHD is often first identified by education professionals - teachers, counselors, or school psychologists. Until now, however, the literature on ADHD has primarily been written by and for clinic-based practitioners. Addressing school-related problems associated with ADHD such as academic underachievement, noncompliance with classroom rules, and problematic peer relationships, this book tells school professionals how to identify and assess students who might have ADHD and how to develop and implement classroom-based programs. Included are a number of appendices containing examples of handouts and observation coding sheets. This book is specifically designed to meet the needs of school psychologists, guidance counselors, administrators, and both regular and special education teachers. It is an appropriate text for advanced courses addressing childhood behavior disorders and also serves as a reference for graduate students receiving training in a variety of school-based professions.

This study investigated a state school counsellor's views regarding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and explored lessons that may be adopted when working with ADHD learners in a formal classroom setting. The study was conducted through a face-to-face interview with a self-employed, South West, UK based school counsellor and psychotherapist. This interview and analyses showed the implication regarding formal education including access to resources and regarding learners needs before conditions. Moreover, the need in taking a holistic approach to learners with ADHD and the importance of seeing the learner within a wider context than just a medical diagnoses. There is a need to do further research into what other professionals such as therapists, social workers and possibly those on the fringes of medicine and education may contribute to working with ADHD learners within a more holistic paradigm. More specifically, would be to investigate further techniques from psychotherapists and school counsellors in working with ADHD students in the classroom.
