An investigation was undertaken to determine the feasibility of using adhesion promoters to improve the interfacial bond between titanium and structural adhesives. The dry and wet strengths of titanium/epoxy/titanium lap-shear joints were determined, utilizing gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as the adhesion promoter. The lap-shear joints using gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane were found to be approximately 25% stronger dry and more than 50% stronger after water exposure than joints prepared with standard surface treatments.

Factors influencing the durability of Titanium-6-4 / epoxy and Ti-6-4 / metal alkoxide / epoxy interphases were studied by first determining chemical and HYSICAL PROPERTIES OF Ti-6-4 adherend surfaces; second by characterizing the strength and durability of Ti-6-4 / epoxy bonds; and third by using aluminum and titanium alkoxides as possible adhesion promoters. Ti-6-4 adherend surfaces were oxidized either by chemical etch or anodization. Four principal pretreatments were studied: chromic acid anodization (CAA), sodium hydroxide anodization (SHA), phosphate fluoride acid etch (P/F), and TURCO basic etch (TURCO). The oxides were characterized physically by SEM, STEM, profilometry, and contact angles; and chemically by XPS, AES, SIMS, and indicator dyes. The two anodically produced oxides were porous, with pore diameters of 40 to 50 nm, while P/F and TURCO pretreated adherends showed no porosity. Good reproducibility of oxide composition was seen by XPS. The acidity/basicity of the surfaces was found to be in order of increasing basicity CAA

Handbook of Adhesion Promoters, Second Edition outlines known mechanisms, principles of use, and the applications of different groups of adhesion promoters, along with a discussion of the mechanisms that cause adhesion loss, such as corrosion, delamination, detachment, liquid penetration and peeling. Surface condition and treatment are also discussed, including different methods (cleaning, mechanical, plasma, microwave, flame, corona discharge, laser, UV, and chemical modification) for practical applications. Formulation of typical primers used in the application of adhesives, sealants, coatings, coil coatings, cosmetics, metal, optical devices, polymers and plastics are covered, with over 50 primer formulations provided. In addition, a full chapter is dedicated to the subject of polymer modification for improved adhesion, a method frequently used instead of the addition of adhesion promoters. The book's final chapters contain information on available evaluation and selection of adhesion promoters that work with different polymers (29), products (28), and those that help to prevent corrosion. Provides detailed, essential data on adhesion promoters, including additives that are both widely used and recently introduced Covers critical aspects involved in the application of adhesion promoters Discusses mechanisms that result in adhesion loss, primer formulation, polymer modification for improved adhesion, and surface treatment methods Supports readers in the selection of adhesion promoters, including detailed information on adhesion promoter properties, applications and their potential

The wet strength of adhesive bonds between resins and glass or metal can be substantially improved by applying adhesion promoters to the glass or metal surface. The most widely used of these adhesion promoters are the organofunctional trialkoxysilanes (RSi(OR')3. Some of the more pertinent research results concerning these silanes have been reviewed in the hope of establishing how they function as finishing agents. Work indicates that these compounds form polysiloxane coatings on the adherend surface. These coatings consist of a strongly adsorbed polysiloxane network along with a more weakly held material consisting of small polymer molecules and unreacted silane. The polysiloxane network exposes a high density of the organofunctional group R- at the air/silane-coating interface. However, the R- groups are not closely spaced, and, in fact, there is some evidence that the coatings can be penetrated by the adhesive resin. Some new approaches are offered for research into the highly complex but exceedingly important area of adhesion promoters. (Author).

Aimed at engineers and materials scientists in a wide range of sectors, this book is a unique source of surface preparation principles and techniques for plastics, thermosets, elastomers, ceramics and metals bonding. With emphasis on the practical, it draws together the technical principles of surface science and surface treatments technologies to enable practitioners to improve existing surface preparation processes to improve adhesion and, as a result, enhance product life. This book describes and illustrates the surface preparations and operations that must be applied to a surface before acceptable adhesive bonding is achieved. It is meant to be an exhaustive overview, including more detailed explanation where necessary, in a continuous and logical progression. The book provides a necessary grounding in the science and practice of adhesion, without which adequate surface preparation is impossible. Surface characterization techniques are included, as is an up-to-date assessment of existing surface treatment technologies such as Atmospheric Plasma, Degreasing, Grit blasting, laser ablation and more. Fundamental material considerations are prioritised over specific applications, making this book relevant to all industries using adhesives, such as medical, automotive, aerospace, packaging and electronics. This second edition represents a full and detailed update, with all major developments in the field included and three chapters added to cover ceramic surface treatment, plasma treatment of non-metallic materials, and the effect of additives on surface properties of plastics. A vital resource for improving existing surface treatment processes to increase product life by creating stronger, more durable adhesive bonds Relevant across a variety of industries, including medical, automotive and packaging Provides essential grounding in the science of surface adhesion, and details how this links with the practice of surface treatment

Chemical reactions taking place on an alumina surface have been investigated by incorporating this surface within an Al-Al0x-Pb tunnelling junction and scanning the inelastic electron tunnelling spectrum. This approach has been employed to study reactions involved in substrate-coating situations, of particular relevance to adhesive bonding. It has been shown that the glass-fibre circuit board (PCB) substrates used in this study may be reused after suitable cleaning. A "dry atmosphere" bag has been incorporated into the procedure to facilitate the doping and subsequent study of air-sensitive materials. Three organotitanium compounds; titanium acetylacetonate, triethanolamine titanate and octylene glycol titanate which are used commercially as primers or adhesion promoters for surface coatings have been investigated.
