The Mechanics of Adhesion shows that adhesion science and technology is inherently an interdisciplinary field, requiring fundamental understanding of mechanics, surfaces, and materials. This volume comprises 19 chapters. Starting with a background and introduction to stress transfer principles; fracture mechanics and singularities; and an energy approach to debonding, the volume continues with analysis of structural lap and butt joint configurations. It then continues with discussions of test methods for strength and constitutive properties; fracture; peel; coatings, the case of adhesion to a single substrate; elastomeric adhesives such as sealants. The role of mechanics in determining the locus of failure in bonded joints is discussed, followed by a chapter on rheology relevant to adhesives and sealants. Pressure sensitive adhesive performance; the principles of tack and tack measurements; and contact mechanics relevant to wetting and surface energy measurements are then covered. The volume concludes with sections on fibermatrix bonding and reinforcement; durability considerations for adhesive bonds; ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation of adhesive bonds; and design of adhesive bonds from a strength perspective. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of engineering and to those with an interest in adhesion science.

The surface of an object is the first thing we see or touch. Nearly every article or object we encounter at home, in industry, land transportation, aerospace, or the medical field in some way uses an adhesive, a sealant, or a decorative coating. Adhesion science provides the technology and the know-how behind these applications. Recent Advances in Adhesion Science and Technology in Honor of Dr. Kash Mittal is dedicated to Dr. Mittal’s outstanding contributions to the global adhesion community and his achievements in disseminating the science of adhesion. This Festschrift volume contains selected papers from the Special Symposium on Recent Advances in Adhesion Science and Technology held in honor of Dr. Mittal to commemorate the publication of his 100th edited book. Written by world-renowned researchers, the papers have been updated for inclusion in this volume. They offer insight into recent developments and the significant ramifications to adhesion science and adhesive technology. Nineteen articles are divided into five sections: Interfaces, Wettability, and Adhesion; Surface Modification of Polymers; Adhesion Aspects of Bio-Based Materials and Bioadhesion; Adhesives and Their Testing; and Nanomaterials and Nanocomposites. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of adhesion science, the topics covered include metal–polymer interfaces and ways to improve adhesion, lateral force at liquid–solid interface, particle adhesion in pharmaceutical sciences, wood joints formed without use of adhesives, reinforced polymer composites using different fillers, "green" composites, medium density fiber board surfaces for powder coating, adhesion aspects in dentistry, E. coli interactions in porous media, analysis of adhesive behavior in bonded assemblies, soy proteins as wood adhesives, carbon nanotube-based interphase sensors, and reaction of multiwalled carbon nanotubes with gaseous atoms.

Handbook Of Adhesion written by D. E. Packham and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-02-08 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This second edition of the successful Handbook of Adhesion provides concise and authoritative articles covering many aspects of the science and technology associated with adhesion and adhesives. It is intended to fill a gap between the necessarily simplified treatment of the student textbook and the full and thorough treatment of the research monograph and review article. The articles are structured in such a way, with internal cross-referencing and external literature references, that the reader can build up a broader and deeper understanding, as their needs require. This second edition includes many new articles covering developments which have risen in prominence in the intervening years, such as scanning probe techniques, the surface forces apparatus and the relation between adhesion and fractal surfaces. Advances in understanding polymer - polymer interdiffusion are reflected in articles drawing out the implications for adhesive bonding. In addition, articles derived from the earlier edition have been revised and updated where needed. Throughout the book there is a renewed emphasis on environmental implications of the use of adhesives and sealants. The scope of the Handbook, which features nearly 250 articles from over 60 authors, includes the background science - physics, chemistry and material science - and engineering, and also aspects of adhesion relevant to the use of adhesives, including topics such as: Sealants and mastics Paints and coatings Printing and composite materials Welding and autohesion Engineering design The Handbook of Adhesion is intended for scientists and engineers in both academia and industry, requiring an understanding of the various facets of adhesion.

Explains the physics and chemistry of adhesion, surface preparation and testsPresents new strategies for formulating superior strong, weak and pressure-sensitive adhesivesIncludes access to unique electronic apps that enable numerical modeling of adhesives This technical bound book explains the basic principles of adhesion and shows how they are used to formulate and improve adhesives. The volume starts by laying out key physical and chemical concepts underlying adhesion and adhesives, including strong and weak bonds plus pressure-sensitive (PSA) across multiple polymer, metal and ceramic adherends. The ideas are expressed in clear and easily understood mathematical formulas that explain surface properties as well as "good" and "bad" adhesion, with the latter covering multiple types of adhesive failure. In this context, the book presents a detailed explanation of methods to predict, test and formulate adhesives and critically analyzes test results and traditionally accepted rules for adhesive formulation. The eBook version includes online access to a unique set of applied computer programs or "apps" that automate a wide range of adhesive formulas and enable readers to input their own data and numerically model adhesion properties in conjunction with, or prior to, chemical compounding and empirical testing. This volume constitutes a lucid and practical introduction to adhesion and adhesives appropriate for specialists at all levels.

The intention of this book is that it should contain everything an engineer needs to know to be able to design and produce adhesively bonded joints which are required to carry significant loads. The advan tages and disadvantages of bonding are given, together with a sufficient understanding of the necessary mechanics and chemistry to enable the designer to make a sound engineering judgement in any particular case. The stresses in joints are discussed extensively so that the engineer can get sufficient philosophy or feel for them, or can delve more deeply into the mathematics to obtain quantitative solutions even with elasto plastic behaviour. A critical description is given of standard methods of testing adhesives, both destructively and non-destructively. The essen tial chemistry of adhesives and the importance of surface preparation are described and guidance is given for adhesive selection by me ans of check lists. For many applications, there will not be a unique adhesive which alone is suitable, and factors such as cost, convenience, produc tion considerations or familiarity may be decisive. A list of applications is given as examples. The authors wish to increase the confidence of engineers using adhesive bonding in load-bearing applications by the information and experience presented. With increasing experience of adhesives en gineering, design will become more elegant as weH as more fitted to its products.
