Weshalb zogen Edelleute und Fürsten nicht nur aus Deutschland und den Niederlanden, sondern auch aus Schottland, England, Frankreich, Spanien und Italien auf langen Ritten oder zu Schiff immer wieder nach Preußen, um dort mit dem Deutschen Orden gegen die Litauer zu kämpfen und für all dies auch noch selbst zu bezahlen? In einem ausgedehnten Durchgang durch die volkssprachige Literatur des spätmittelalterlichen Europas wird gezeigt, wie die kriegerische Aristokratie leben sollte, die oft genug im Solddienst unterwegs war. Ehrenreden und Wappenbücher der Herolde sind dabei eine besonders ergiebige Quelle. Es stellt sich heraus, dass es eine autonome Adelskultur gab, die sich kirchlichen Zumutungen nur unter ihren Bedingungen beugte. Personengeschichtliche Kataloge und rekonstruierte Einzelviten zeigen, dass und wie literarisches Vorbild und tatsächliche Lebensführung einander entsprachen und Königsberg in Preußen ein Jahrhundert lang zum Zentrum des internationalen Rittertums werden konnte. Why did gentry, nobles and princes, not only from Germany and the Netherlands, but also from Scotland, England, France, Spain and Italy go ever so often on long rides or by ship to Prussia in order to fight with the Teutonic Order against the heathen Lithuanians, and all that on their own cost? A thorough examination of the European vernacular literatures of the later middle ages shows, how the armigerous aristocracy, quite often on the road as mercenaries, was thought to live. "Ehrenreden" and armorials are a most rewarding source in this respect. The result is, that there was an autonomous noble culture, which accepted ecclesiastical prescriptions only as long as they corresponded to secular conditions. Extensive biographical catalogues and reconstructed single lives show that and how literary models and effective livestyles corresponded and Königsberg was able to become for one century the hotspot of international chivalry.

Over the last two centuries, Europe has developed various forms of political representation from which democratic parliamentary systems gradually emerged. This book unravels the conditions, scale and impact under which political participation of common burghers and peasants emerged. Political participation in Europe before the Revolutions moved away from the traditional focus on ‘Three Estates’ which has often blurred the interpretation of popular participation’s role in societies. This book instead examines Europe’s key political variants such as high levels of commercialization and urbanization, combined with a balance of powers between competing categories of actors in society controlling relatively independent resources which lead to political participation forming across the continent. Instead of starting from any ideal type of political participation, this book focuses on the variation through time and space, its composition and activity, helps to explain the functions particular institutional settings fulfilled. The time frame 1100–1800 sheds light on the long-term evolutions such as institutional inertia and processes of oligarchizing. Military Diasporas proposes a new research approach to analyse the role of foreign military personnel as composite and partly imagined para-ethnic groups. These groups not only buttressed a state or empire’s military might but crucially connected, policed, and administered (parts of) realms as a transcultural and transimperial class while representing the polity’s universal or at least cosmopolitan aspirations at court or on diplomatic and military missions. Welche kulturellen Auswirkungen hat es, wenn die reichste und mächtigste Gruppe einer Gesellschaft unmittelbar am Krieg teilnimmt? Hochmittelalterliche Adlige gründeten ihren Herrschaftsanspruch auf das Recht und die Fähigkeit zu kämpfen und Krieg zu führen und brachten dies auch in den von ihnen beauftragten und materiell geförderten Texten zum Ausdruck: Die These der Studie lautet daher, dass Texte wie Hartmanns Iwein oder die Steirische Reimchronik bestrebt sind, kriegerisches Handwerk zu inszenieren, indem nicht Gewalt und Blutvergießen, sondern manheit und Kampf ins Zentrum der Darstellung gerückt werden. Die Analyse zeigt zum einen, dass die Fähigkeit zu kämpfen und zu töten integraler Bestandteil von manheit ist und eine Übersetzung mit ‚Tapferkeit‘ daher stets die modernen Implikation tugendhaften Erduldens in das mittelhochdeutsche Wort hineinträgt. Zum anderen wird die Wirkweise der Legitimation und Glorifizierung von Gewalt ersichtlich, die sich aus einer Darstellung von Gewalt als Bestandteil einer legitimen Kampfhandlung oder als Ausdruck von manheit ergeben. Ein grundlegender Bestandteil dieser Legitimations- und Glorifizierungsstrategien liegt in der Funktionalität konstitutiver Konventionen, die den einzelnen Aktionen des ritterlichen Kampfes besonderen Wert beimisst.
