An in-depth examination of the novel ways young people support and learn from each other though participation in online fanfiction communities. Over the past twenty years, amateur fanfiction writers have published an astonishing amount of fiction in online repositories. More than 1.5 million enthusiastic fanfiction writers—primarily young people in their teens and twenties—have contributed nearly seven million stories and more than 176 million reviews to a single online site, Fanfiction.net. In this book, Cecilia Aragon and Katie Davis provide an in-depth examination of fanfiction writers and fanfiction repositories, finding that these sites are not shallow agglomerations and regurgitations of pop culture but rather online spaces for sophisticated and informal learning. Through their participation in online fanfiction communities, young people find ways to support and learn from one another. Aragon and Davis term this novel system of interactive advice and instruction distributed mentoring, and describe its seven attributes, each of which is supported by an aspect of networked technologies: aggregation, accretion, acceleration, abundance, availability, asynchronicity, and affect. Employing an innovative combination of qualitative and quantitative analyses, they provide an in-depth ethnography, reporting on a nine-month study of three fanfiction sites, and offer a quantitative analysis of lexical diversity in the 61.5 billion words on the Fanfiction.net site. Going beyond fandom, Aragon and Davis consider how distributed mentoring could improve not only other online learning platforms but also formal writing instruction in schools.

In the first part the three fields - fandom, adolescence and Teen TV - are defined and the relevant literature is reviewed, paying special attention to the period of the late 1990s till now. The second part examines two case studies of Internet fan-communities and the way they re-contextualize the television text and construct performance space. The third part consists of two case studies of contemporary American teen-television to show the way the series are contextualized by their broadcasting space and its rhythms and temporalities, and how online fandom changes the possibilities of acquisition and the spaces provided for individual use of the media text. It is an important area of study for several reasons. It acknowledges the growing significance of fancultural production and its importance for the understanding of contemporary pop culture, and the value of the Internet as an innovative and fruitful source on television fan discourse. It brings together traditionally separated concepts that are essentially intertwined. This is an attempt to incorporate a fan view in an academic work to allow a deeper look in the fancultural practices.

This book explores English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) use in online interaction within virtual communities constituted by fans of popular culture texts who engage in creative writing inspired by such texts. Emerging from globalization processes, ELF, computer-mediated-communication, and fandom are here conceptualized as postmodern phenomena, characterized by fluidity, hybridity, and translocal practices, which include the exploitation of plurilingual resources on the part of non-native users communicating in English. This study adopts and applies the notions of linguistic heteroglossia and super-diversity to the qualitative analysis of a fan fiction corpus constituted of online-published stories inspired by Japanese media texts, in which fan writers bring their sociocultural and linguistic repertoires to bear on their stories, interspersing narration and dialogue with non-English language elements to fulfil social, narrative, and pragmatic functions.

The Internet is nothing less than a medium for the indiscriminate and global dissemination of information if we take "information" in its cybernetic sense as bits of data – any data. As such, it is also a massive, amorphous, rhizomic collection of substantiated facts, guesswork, fantasy, madness, debate, criminal energy, big business, stupidity, brilliance, all in all a seemingly limitless multiplication of voices, all clamouring to be heard. It is a medium which proliferates stories, narratives, fictions, in ways which are both new and familiar. It is as a generator of fictions that the Internet seems to be just waiting to be explored by the disciplines of literary, cultural and linguistic studies: Fan-fiction, slash and straight; scam baiting; fan sites; ‘wild’ or ‘rogue’ interpretive universes; gossip, theories, musings, opinions. As a singularly unstructured – and hence as yet uncanonizable – body of texts, the stories told on the Internet have a distinct element of ‘grass-roots’ fictionalization and so offer an unprecedented opportunity to access, hear and investigate the stories and fantasies woven by non-professional writers alongside their more formally recognized colleagues. As a medium which is beginning to investigate itself by means of various meta-debates within the vast community of Internet fictionalizers, it is also a location where emergent phenomena may be debated in their process of being generated.
