«Nelle esperienze tecniche dei primi tempi, quando studiavo problemi di organizzazione scientifica e di cronometraggio, sapevo che l’uomo e la macchina erano due domini ostili l’uno all’altro, che occorreva conciliare. Conoscevo la monotonia terribile e il peso dei gesti ripetuti all’infinito davanti a un trapano o ad una pressa, e sapevo che era necessario togliere l’uomo da questa degradante schiavitù. Ma il cammino era tremendamente lungo e difficile. Mi dovetti accontentare in principio a volere l’optimum e non il maximum delle energie umane, a perfezionare gli strumenti di assistenza, le condizioni di lavoro. Ma mi resi a poco a poco ben conto che tutto questo non bastava. Bisognava dare consapevolezza di fini al lavoro. E l’ottenerlo non era più compito di un “padrone illuminato”, ma della società». Adriano Olivetti fu una delle massime figure di imprenditore che l’Italia abbia espresso nell’intero arco del Ventesimo secolo. Il suo fascino era e rimane legato alla straordinaria varietà e creatività del suo agire e del suo pensare. Molto ricco di spunti era l’insieme dei nuclei tematici attorno ai quali egli formulò proposte originali e concrete che, in larga misura, seppe realizzare nelle sue imprese ponendosi, a dir poco, una quarantina d’anni in anticipo sui suoi tempi. Ricercatore instancabile, con lo sguardo proteso sempre avanti, credeva fermamente in una funzione attiva della cultura nell’industria e, insieme, nel progetto sociale di una Comunità di cui l’industria fosse momento propulsore. Nella sua breve esistenza riunì intorno a sé un’intera generazione di intellettuali di cui seppe essere il geniale regista. Intellettuale egli stesso, anche se fuori da ogni schema, pioniere nel campo dell’urbanistica, editore, filosofo della politica, creatore dello “Stile Olivetti”, riuscì a lasciare un’eredità doviziosa: il magistero di un umanesimo dei tempi moderni. A Olivetti siamo dunque debitori di un ventaglio ricchissimo di “lezioni” che, peraltro, nel giro di pochi decenni, la nostra cultura ha lasciato cadere nel più totale oblio. Di tali “lezioni dimenticate” questo volume si propone di recuperare quella che, forse, è la più importante. Si tratta della lezione che prende le mosse dalla concezione olivettiana della “fabbrica” – non come impresa privata ma come realtà sociale, affidata alla gestione di una dirigenza consapevole di svolgere una funzione pubblica, con un’ampia partecipazione dei lavoratori al suo governo – per mettere capo al progetto istituzionale comunitario, espressione di un federalismo integrale, infra e sovra-nazionale, e per sfociare nell’impegno diretto di Olivetti in politica, con la breve, esaltante e sfortunata avventura del Movimento Comunità. Bruno Segre (Lucerna, 1930), ricercatore e operatore culturale indipendente, ha studiato filosofia a Milano alla scuola di Antonio Banfi. Si è occupato di sociologia della cooperazione ed educazione degli adulti nell’ambito del Movimento Comunità fondato da Adriano Olivetti. Ha insegnato in Svizzera dal 1964 al 1969. Per oltre dieci anni ha fatto parte del Consiglio del Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea di Milano. Dal 1991 al 2007 ha presieduto l’Associazione Amici di Nevé Shalom/Wahat al-Salam. Ha diretto dal 2001 al 2011 il periodico di vita e cultura ebraica «Keshet». Autore di numerosi saggi, ha scritto fra gli altri Gli ebrei in Italia (1993; nuova edizione 2001), Shoah (1998; nuova edizione 2003) e Israele la paura la speranza, (2014).

In the journal articles, historiographical essays, and numerous references to the political thought of Adriano Olivetti, the term constantly used to characterize his thinking is ‘utopia’. It is from this word, or rather, the misuse of this word, where one can begin to shed light on Olivettian political thinking. The term ‘utopia’, which has come to designate an entire vein of political literature, has also entered into common usage to define an impossible project, a wide-eyed dream; and a ‘utopian’ is that individual who longs for abstract projects instead of concrete ideas. It would be unproductive to resort to the diverse arguments of Firpo, of Mannheim, or of Bloch, of the philosophers of the Frankfurt School or others, since, as Giovanni Sartori has observed, after the word ceases to exist – where utopia is understood to mean impossibility – the impossibilities still remain. So, precisely because the literature on the political thought of Olivetti appears to suffer greatly from ‘empirical’ influences, it seems necessary to confront the complexities of his presumed utopianism with a methodological approach. This book investigates the inherent ‘impossibilities’, if they indeed exist, in the political thought of Olivetti. It also seeks to understand, as a result, if the Olivettian ideal is lacking in any true consistency, since it is secluded from an adequate analysis of historical reality, or if it is, rather, an idealism which does not lose sight of reality, in an attempt to overturn it as the basis for a plausible global vision. This book will be of interests to students and scholars in history, political economy and philosophy.
