This report describes a cognitive task analysis (CTA) of combat team tasks during an advance to contact, with the primary objective of providing input to the development of the Tactical Battlefield Command System. The objective of the CTA was to establish the information requirements of combat team commanders, troop leaders, and platoon commanders & warrant officers; estimate how these may impact on command & control effectiveness; comment on detailed information elements in terms of system design requirements or constraints; outline major areas of cognitive demand to be addressed in system design; and recommend related work for understanding user requirements. The CTA was limited to combat team command functions for infantry & armour using existing standard operating procedures. Research methodology involved guiding subject matter experts, with extensive combat team command experience, through the major elements of an advanced to contact scenario. Interview data were tabulated by phase of scenario and analyzed in terms of situation awareness, communication effectiveness, decision support, and mental workload, as well as issues related to mission context and time pressure. Appendices include an introduction & overview of CTA, details of the interview procedure, a table of CTA results, an overview of concepts underlying effective command & control performance, and interview notes.
