Advanced Applications of Ionic Liquids discusses the intersection of nanotechnology with ionic liquids (ILs) and materials, along with opportunities for advanced engineering applications in various research fields. Novel materials at nano scales with ILs creates an upsurge in the thermal and electrochemical constancy of the nano scale particles, making them ideal for industrial applications. The implementation of ILs at nano scale includes an interaction of constituents, which is beneficial for electron transfer reactions. These new composites can be implemented as sensors, electronics, catalysts and photonics. Including ILs in polymer composites enhance electrochemical consistency, govern particle size, upsurge conductivity, reduce toxicity, and more. This book is a comprehensive reference for researchers working with IL based technologies for environmental and energy applications. Covers all industrial aspects and advanced applications of ionic liquids (ILs) Discusses the advanced applications of ILs across multiple fields, including industrial chemistry and chemical engineering Includes a discussion of the use of ionic liquids in functional polymers, with applications for catalysis, energy conservation, sensors, and more

This book contains the lecture notes for the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on th Green Industrial Applications of Ionic Liquids held April 12th_16 , 2000 in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. This was the fIrst international meeting devoted to research in the area of ionic liquids (salts with melting points below 100 0c), and was intended to explore the promise of ionic liquids as well as to set a research agenda for the fIeld. It was the fIrst international meeting dedicated to the study and application of ionic liquids as solvents, and forty-one scientists and engineers from academia, industry, and government research laboratories (as well as six industry observers and four student assistants) met to discuss the current and future status of the application of ionic liquids to new green industrial technologies. It was immediately clear that the number of organic chemists and engineers working in the fIeld needed to be increased. It was also clear that the declining interest in high temperature molten salts and subsequent increase in low melting ionic liquid solvents had not yet taken hold in Eastern Europe. Participants from NATO Partner Countries contributed signifIcant expertise in high temperature molten salts and were able to take back a new awareness and interest in ionic liquid solvents.

This volume, of a two volume set on ionic liquids, focuses on the applications of ionic liquids in a growing range of areas. Throughout the 1990s, it seemed that most of the attention in the area of ionic liquids applications was directed toward their use as solvents for organic and transition-metal-catalyzed reactions. Certainly, this interest continues on to the present date, but the most innovative uses of ionic liquids span a much more diverse field than just synthesis. Some of the main topics of coverage include the application of RTILs in various electronic applications (batteries, capacitors, and light-emitting materials), polymers (synthesis and functionalization), nanomaterials (synthesis and stabilization), and separations. More unusual applications can be noted in the fields of biomass utilization, spectroscopy, optics, lubricants, fuels, and refrigerants. It is hoped that the diversity of this volume will serve as an inspiration for even further advances in the use of RTILs.

Due to their very low volatility, high thermal stability, and ability to dissolve a wide variety of compounds, ionic liquids appear to meet the rigorous criteria for industrial applications. Among other uses, ionic liquids appear to be efficient for gas capture, biomass pretreatment, separation problems, and electrochemistry. They are also used in electrolytes, as lubricants, catalysts, or as antistatic agents. This book discusses the various uses of ionic liquids. Chapters discuss such topics as the use of ionic liquids in batteries, new mono, di, and trimeric imidazolium and pyridinium ionic liquids as catalysts in organic chemistry, the physico-chemical properties of ionic liquid-substituted double-network gels for industrial applications, the use of paramagnetic ionic liquids in magnetic resonance imaging, the compatibility of filter materials used with ionic liquids, and the development of low-friction ion gels for industrial applications.

Recent Advances in Ionic Liquids contains research on the preparation, characterization, and potential applications of stable ionic liquids (ILs). ILs are a class of low- and stable-melting point, ionic compounds that have a variety of properties allowing many of them to be sustainable green solvents. It is promising novel research from top to bottom and has received a lot of interest over the last few decades. It covers the advanced topics of physical, catalytic, chemical, polymeric, and potential applications of ILs. This book features interesting reports on cutting-edge science and technology related to the preparation, characterization, polymerization, and potential applications of ILs. This potentially unique work offers various approaches on the R&D implementation of ILs or related ionic catalysts and their conjugates. With this in mind, the authors present R&D on the preparation, properties, potential applications, and utility of ILs. The chapters describe important applications in a wide variety of contexts, including polymerization, devices, electrochemistry, and biotechnology. Both the theoretical and practical, it can be passed from the stable as well as molten salt to the ionic liquid and vice versa. Experimental and theoretical techniques for examining these studies are elaborated based on the methods for preparation, utilization, applications, and analysis. This book epitomizes the transfer of these techniques and methods between the differing temperature regimes, and is a major contribution to the future of both fields. The book presents an overview of current ILs fundamentals: preparation, polymerization, substantial applications, and enhancement of research worldwide. The techniques of ILs preparation, total characterization, and possible applications related with ILs as well as modified or conjugated material research are investigated. It is hoped that it will be an important book for research organizations, governmental research centers, and academic libraries engaged in recent R&D of ILs.

Research into ionic liquids (ILs) has been a very rapidly growing discipline in recent years. ILs have attracted very considerable attention because of their unique properties, which may be useful in new processes and technologies. They have already been studied for a variety of applications such as alternative solvents in organic synthesis and catalysis, reaction media for biocatalysis and biotransformation, in the separation sciences, electrolytes in batteries and solar cells, alternative lubricants, and as media for tissue preservation. ILs have excellent solvation properties, are thermally, chemically and electrochemically stable, and their vapour pressure is negligible. Nevertheless, the same properties that make them attractive replacements for other volatile industrial compounds may render them hazardous to ecosystems. This book discusses several topics that include the pharmaceutical aspect of ILs; the application of ILs to lignin extraction and depolymerisation; recent developments in ionic liquid toxicity assessments; the role temperature, irradiation and oxidation has on the stability of ILs; and analytical methods for determining the constituents of ILs.
