The goal of this special collection was to provide an unique opportunity to exchange information, to present the latest results as well as to review relevant issues concerning contemporary research in mechanical engineering. Young scientists in particular were encouraged to submit their latest research results, and this is reflected in the final result. Review from Book News Inc.: The 16 selected and refereed papers discuss recent developments in mechanical engineering such as mechanical and microstructural properties of cement paste incorporating nanometer silica particles with various specific surface areas, monitoring corrosion in the marine environment using wavelet description, chip damage risk in thermosonic wire bonding, the free-vibration characteristics of thermally loaded rectangular plates, structure-property relationship in burn collagen reinforcing musculo-skeletal tissues, and an experimental approach to the biomechanical characterization of a cervical corporectory using porcine specimens. The ef?cacy of sound to penetrate the seas made acoustic systems in the past c- tury the leading tools for sensing objects in and measuring properties of the seas. For over sixty years The United States Of?ce of Naval Research (ONR) has been a major sponsor of undersea research and development at universities, national laboratories, and industrial organizations. Appropriately ONR is the sponsor of this monograph series. The intent of the series is to summarize recent accomplishments in, and to outline perspectives for, underwater acoustics in speci?c ?elds of research. The general ?eld has escalated in importance and spread broadly with richness and depth of understanding. It has also, quite naturally, become more specialized. The goal of this series is to present monographs that critically review both past and recent accomplishments in order to address the shortcomings in present und- standing. In this way, these works will bridge the gaps in understanding among the specialists and favorably color the direction of new research and development. Each monograph is intended to be a stand-alone advanced contribution to the ?eld. We trust that the reader will also ?nd that each is a critical introduction to related specialized topics of interest as well.

Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction The definitive biography of the transformational Russian leader by the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Khrushchev. "Essential reading for the twenty-first [century]." —Radhika Jones, The New York Times Book Review When Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union in 1985, the USSR. was one of the world’s two superpowers. By 1989, his liberal policies of perestroika and glasnost had permanently transformed Soviet Communism, and had made enemies of radicals on the right and left. By 1990 he, more than anyone else, had ended the Cold War, and in 1991, after barely escaping from a coup attempt, he unintentionally presided over the collapse of the Soviet Union he had tried to save. In the first comprehensive biography of the final Soviet leader, William Taubman shows how a peasant boy became the Soviet system’s gravedigger, how he clambered to the top of a system designed to keep people like him down, how he found common ground with America’s arch-conservative president Ronald Reagan, and how he permitted the USSR and its East European empire to break apart without using force to preserve them. Throughout, Taubman portrays the many sides of Gorbachev’s unique character that, by Gorbachev’s own admission, make him "difficult to understand." Was he in fact a truly great leader, or was he brought low in the end by his own shortcomings, as well as by the unyielding forces he faced? Drawing on interviews with Gorbachev himself, transcripts and documents from the Russian archives, and interviews with Kremlin aides and adversaries, as well as foreign leaders, Taubman’s intensely personal portrait extends to Gorbachev’s remarkable marriage to a woman he deeply loved, and to the family that they raised together. Nuanced and poignant, yet unsparing and honest, this sweeping account has all the amplitude of a great Russian novel.

This book is in great demand by baseball enthusiasts. Having been connected with every department of the game from player to magnate, Mr. Spalding has contributed a very important work to the game's history. As the invincible pitcher of the Boston Club, previous to the formation of the National League, his book of so many pages is an interesting record of events dating from the beginning of the great American pastime. It is not exactly a history of the game, but deals largely with incidents during the author's career, who was a player in the late 1860s and early 1870s, and helped organize the National League in 1876. One chapter, devoted to sundry topics, gives an account of the sale of the immortal "King Kelly," the original "$10,000 beauty," by Chicago to the Boston Club in the late 1880s. Other Chapters are devoted to the literature of the game, quoting several instances of the baseball paragrapher's art and also specimens of the distinct poetry of the pastime, of which "Casey at the Bat" is probably the most widely known. The Cincinnati Red Stockings Mr. Spalding gives credit as being the pioneer professional organization. It was not, however, until 1871 that professional baseball playing, as recognized today, was instituted. Mr. Spalding shows how cricket could not do for Americans. He says it is suitable for the British temperament, but not for the Yankee hustling spirit. He also tells how he worked into the game through a one-handed catch when a small boy. To lovers of baseball, whose name is legion, and whose number increases yearly, this book comprises in itself a whole library of useful information.

'Madame...Sir...May we come in?' This was the prelude to some dreadful news in the Germonprez household. No parent should ever have to bury a child, especially not after a suicide. The chalk outline on the pavement is a constant reminder - even when it is no longer there. Linthout draws an almost tangible pain with his immediate, rudimentary art and strong script - combined with his own personal experience.
