Power System Control and Protection focuses on the control and protection of power systems to ensure a secure and reliable supply as the society depends greatly on electric energy. This book examines the problems surrounding the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of electricity. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the functional and environmental requirements for the intelligent remote terminal in which much of the logic linked with each function has been programmed and is executed in a digital processor. This text then examines the objectives, functions, and elements of the control center design. Other chapters consider the operating characteristics and configuration of the system components of an audio-frequency power line carrier load management system. This book discusses as well the concept of transmission line relaying by digital computer. The final chapter deals with the large-scale utilization of wind energy. Power systems engineers will find this book useful.

Power Supply Devices and Systems of Relay Protection brings relay protection and electrical power engineers a single, concentrated source of information on auxiliary power supply systems and devices. The book also tackles specific problems and solutions of relay protection power supply systems and devices, which are often not dealt with in the literature. The author, an experienced engineer with more than 100 patents, draws on his own experience to offer practical, tested advice to readers. A Guide to Relay Protection Power Supply for Engineers and Technicians The first chapter reviews the electronics and primary elements of the system, including transistors, thyristors, optocouplers, logic elements, and relays, and their principles of operation. This background gives staff who service relay protection power supply systems the necessary electronics knowledge to help them work more effectively with the equipment. The next chapters of the book then cover built-in digital protection relay power supplies, battery chargers, accumulator batteries, uninterruptible power supply, and characteristic features of auxiliary DC systems at substations and power plants. The final chapters discuss questions and problems that engineers and technicians may face. These include insulation problems, issues in auxiliary DC power supply such as voltage dips, and electromagnetic disturbances such as blackouts, spikes, and surges. The author also explains how to address them. Suitable for beginners and experienced engineers alike, the book is written for those who work with relay protection systems and with AC and DC auxiliary power systems in power plants and substations. It combines theory and practical recommendations to provide a valuable reference on power supply devices and systems.

As industry power demands become increasingly sensitive, power quality distortion becomes a critical issue. The recent increase in nonlinear loads drawing non-sinusoidal currents has seen the introduction of various tools to manage the clean delivery of power. Power demands of medical facilities, data storage and information systems, emergency equipment, etc. require uninterrupted, high quality power. Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and active filters provide this delivery. The first to treat these power management tools together in a comprehensive discussion, Uninterruptible Power Supplies and Active Filters compares the similarities of UPS, active filters, and unified power quality conditioners. The book features a description of low-cost and reduced-parts configurations presented for the first time in any publication, along with a presentation of advanced digital controllers. These configurations are vital as industries seek to reduce the cost of power management in their operations. As this field of power management technology continues to grow, industry and academia will come to rely upon the comprehensive treatment found within this book. Industrial engineers in power quality, circuits and devices, and aerospace engineers as well as graduate students will find this a complete and insightful resource for studying and applying the tools of this rapidly developing field.

Initial material for this book was developed over a period of several years through the introduction in the mid-seventies of a graduate-level course en titled, "Control and Operation of Interconnected Power Systems," at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Subsequent involvement with the utility industry and in teaching continuing education courses on modern power sys tem control and operation contributed to the complimentary treatment of the dynamic aspects of this overall topic. In effect, we have evolved a textbook that provides a thorough under standing of fudamentals as needed by a graduate student with a prior back ground in power systems analysis at the undergraduate level, and in system theory concepts normally provided at the beginning of the graduate level in electrical engineering. It is also designed to provide the depth needed both by the serious graduate student and the power industry engineer involved in the activities of energy control centers and short-term operations planning. As explained in Chapter 2, the entire book can be covered in a two quarter course sequence. The bulk of the material may be covered in one semester. For a two-semester offering, we recommend that students be in volved in some project work to further their depth of understanding. Utility and consulting industry engineers should concentrate on the more advanced concepts and developments usually available at the latter half of each chap ter.

As we increasingly use electronic devices to direct our daily lives, so grows our dependence on reliable energy sources to power them. Because modern electronic systems demand steady, efficient, reliable DC voltage sources--often at a sub-1V level--commercial AC lines, batteries, and other common resources no longer suffice. New technologies also require intricate techniques to protect against natural and manmade disasters. Still, despite its importance, practical information on this critical subject remains hard to find. Using simple, accessible language to balance coverage of theoretical and practical aspects, DC Power Supplies, Power Management and Surge Protection details the essentials of power electronics circuits applicable to low-power systems, including modern portable devices. A summary of underlying principles and essential design points, it compares academic research and industry publications and reviews DC power supply fundamentals, including linear and low-dropout regulators. Content also addresses common switching regulator topologies, exploring resonant conversion approaches. Coverage includes other important topics such as: Control aspects and control theory Digital control and control ICs used in switching regulators Power management and energy efficiency Overall power conversion stage and basic protection strategies for higher reliability Battery management and comparison of battery chemistries and charge/discharge management Surge and transient protection of circuits designed with modern semiconductors based on submicron dimension transistors This specialized design resource explores applicable fundamental elements of power sources, with numerous cited references and discussion of commercial components and manufacturers. Regardless of their previous experience level, this information will greatly aid designers, researchers, and academics who, study, design, and produce the viable new power sources needed to propel our modern electronic world. This report shows that the requirements for a Modular Solid State Uninterruptible Power System (UPS), as described in Specification FAA-ER-450-012, can be met using solid-state-circuit and inverter techniques available today. Each module will consist of a rectifier-battery-inverter assembly capable of operating from either commercial power, standby engine generators or internal battery power, and deliverying continuous, uninterruptible, regulated, three-phase a-c power to it load. The UPS must be designed so that each module of a typical four-module system will have an MTBF of the order of 1100 hours and an MTTR of one hour to meet the system MTBF requirement of 100,000 hours. The UPS must also be designed so that the output voltage during all switching and fault clearing operations falls within a voltage-time envelope which the electronic load equipment can tolerate.
