Expansion of water resources is a key factor in the socio-economic development of all countries. Dams play a critical role in water storage, especially for areas with unequal rainfall and limited water availability. While the safety of existing dams, periodic re-evaluations and life extensions are the primary objectives in developed countries, the design and construction of new dams are the main concerns in developing countries. The role of dam engineers has greatly changed over recent decades. Thanks to new technologies, the surveillance, monitoring, design and analysis tasks involved in this process have significantly improved. The current edited book is a collection of dam-related papers. The overall aim of this edited book is to improve modeling, simulation and field measurements for different dam types (i.e. concrete gravity dams, concrete arch dams, and embankments). The articles cover a wide range of topics on the subject of dams, and reflect the scientific efforts and engineering approaches in this challenging and exciting research field.

This is the 21st Volume in the series Memorial Tributes compiled by the National Academy of Engineering as a personal remembrance of the lives and outstanding achievements of its members and foreign associates. These volumes are intended to stand as an enduring record of the many contributions of engineers and engineering to the benefit of humankind. In most cases, the authors of the tributes are contemporaries or colleagues who had personal knowledge of the interests and the engineering accomplishments of the deceased. Through its members and foreign associates, the Academy carries out the responsibilities for which it was established in 1964. Under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering was formed as a parallel organization of outstanding engineers. Members are elected on the basis of significant contributions to engineering theory and practice and to the literature of engineering or on the basis of demonstrated unusual accomplishments in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology. The National Academies share a responsibility to advise the federal government on matters of science and technology. The expertise and credibility that the National Academy of Engineering brings to that task stem directly from the abilities, interests, and achievements of our members and foreign associates, our colleagues and friends, whose special gifts we remember in this book.

Following the great progress made in computing technology, both in computer and programming technology, computation has become one of the most powerful tools for researchers and practicing engineers. It has led to tremendous achievements in computer-based structural engineering and there is evidence that current devel- ments will even accelerate in the near future. To acknowledge this trend, Tongji University, Vienna University of Technology, and Chinese Academy of Engine- ing, co-organized the International Symposium on Computational Structural En- neering 2009 in Shanghai (CSE’09). CSE’09 aimed at providing a forum for presentation and discussion of sta- of-the-art development in scientific computing applied to engineering sciences. Emphasis was given to basic methodologies, scientific development and engine- ing applications. Therefore, it became a central academic activity of the Inter- tional Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM), the European Com- nity on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS), The Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanic, the China Civil Engineering So- ety, and the Architectural Society of China. A total of 10 invited papers, and around 140 contributed papers were p- sented in the proceedings of the symposium. Contributors of papers came from 20 countries around the world and covered a wide spectrum related to the compu- tional structural engineering.

Practice has proven that conducting safety evaluations of reservoir dams has become a necessary measure to ensure the safety of water conservancy projects. This book introduces the development and achievements in the safety management of reservoir dams in China. Each chapter systematically sorts out and integrates evaluation measures related to different stages of the entire life cycle of reservoir dams, including planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance, repair and reinforcement, and decommissioning or removal, forming a complete dam safety evaluation management system. This book emphasizes the importance of conducting on-site inspections for dam safety management. A differentiated safety evaluation method and disposal strategy have been proposed for different engineering scales, management levels, and risk levels, making the technical route of safety evaluation more reasonable and operable. The book is written as a reference book for professional engineers and is also suitable for post graduate courses.
