A substance that is created to interact with biological systems for a medical purpose is known as biomaterials. It can be used for therapeutic or a diagnostic medical purpose. Biomaterials are derived from nature and are even synthesized in the laboratory with the help of various chemical methods such as utilizing metallic components, ceramics, composite material and polymers. Since biomaterials are used for medical applications, they comprise a whole or a part of a living structure which performs, augments and replaces a natural function. Dental biomaterials are specially invented materials, invented for the use in dentistry. They are majorly used in dental implants. There are many different types of dental materials, such as temporary dressings, dental restorations, endodontic materials, impression materials, prosthetic materials, etc. The characteristics of these materials differ according to their planned purposes. This book covers in detail some existent theories and innovative concepts revolving around dental biomaterials. It presents researches and studies performed by experts across the globe. This book will prove to be immensely beneficial to students and researchers in this field.

Ceramic materials are currently applied to two categories of restorative dentistry, as all-ceramic fixed-partial dentures and as implantable components. While the former demands mainly integrated and balanced properties of mechanical and aesthetic origins, the latter also relies strongly on the material’s bio-oriented properties. This chapter discusses the material demands for solving the problems encountered in current practice that indicate the direction for future developments. This is done by bearing in mind both process restrictions and compatibilities. Focus is placed on developing materials that have the potential for improving aesthetics, for preserving a healthy situation to secure a prolonged treatment survival, and for improving the durability and reliability of the restorations while also simplifying the procedures of materials manufacture and clinical operation. Biomimetic materials and processes related to them are topics of general importance from a long perspective.

A Review On Dental Materials written by Hamid Reza Rezaie and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-25 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book discusses the current biomaterials used for dental applications and the basic sciences underpinning their application. The most critical structures in the oral cavity are the teeth, which play a central role in speaking, biting, chewing, tasting and swallowing. Teeth consist of three types of tissue: the cementum, enamel and dentin, with bone and gingival tissue serving as supporting structures. Caries, tooth wear, trauma and mechanical defects can lead to severe facial conditions; however, correcting these defects remains a challenge for scientists and dentists. Presenting insights form a broad range of disciplines, including materials science, biology, physiology and clinical science, this book provides a timely review of the principles, processing and application of dental materials.

As the demand for healthy, attractive teeth increases, the methods and materials employed in restorative dentistry have become progressively more advanced. Non-metallic biomaterials for tooth repair and replacement focuses on the use of biomaterials for a range of applications in tooth repair and, in particular, dental restoration. Part one reviews the structure, modification and repair of dental tissues. The properties of enamel and dentin and their role in adhesive dental restoration are discussed, along with biomineralization and biomimicry of tooth enamel, and enamel matrix proteins (EMPs) for periodontal regeneration. Part two goes on to discuss the processing, bonding and wear properties of dental ceramics, glasses and sol-gel derived bioactive glass ceramics for tooth repair and replacement. Dental composites for tooth repair and replacement are then the focus of part three, including composite adhesive and antibacterial restorative materials for dental applications. The effects of particulate filler systems on the properties and performance of dental polymer composites are considered, along with composite based oral implants, fibre reinforced composites (FRCs) as dental materials and luting cements for dental applications. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Non-metallic biomaterials for tooth repair and replacement provides a clear overview for all those involved in the development and application of these materials, including academic researchers, materials scientists and dental clinicians. Discusses the properties of enamel and dentin and their role in adhesive dental restoration Chapters also examine the wear properties of dental ceramics, glasses and bioactive glass ceramics for tooth repair and replacement Dental composites and antibacterial restorative mateirals are also considered

Focusing on the dental materials most commonly used, Dental Materials: Properties and Manipulation, 10th Edition covers the tasks that dental assistants and dental hygienists typically perform. It shows the most current materials, how to mix and apply them in a clinical setting, and how to educate patients about them. Now in full color, this edition adds more photographs of materials actually being mixed, used, and applied, and includes detailed coverage of ceramics, metals, and implant and impression materials. Written by well-known experts on restorative dentistry and materials, John Powers and John Wataha, Dental Materials is a trusted text that keeps you on top of the rapidly developing field of dental materials. Comprehensive, focused coverage includes all the materials and tasks relevant to day-to-day practice of dental assistants and dental hygienists. Cutting-edge content describes the latest materials commonly used in dental practice, including those in esthetics, ceramics, dental implants, and impressions. More than 400 illustrations and photographs make it easier to understand properties and recognize differences in materials in general and specific types of products. Discussions of materials begin with a study of their properties and uses before moving into specific manipulations and applications in dentistry. Note boxes highlight key points and important terminology throughout the text. Summary tables and boxes summarize key concepts and procedures. Quick Review boxes summarize the material in each chapter. A logical format sets up a solid foundation before progressing into discussions of specific materials, moving from the more common and simple applications such as composites to more specialized areas such as polymers and dental implants. Review questions provide an excellent study tool with 20 to 30 self-test questions in each chapter. Key terms are listed at the outset of each chapter, bolded at their initial mention in the text, and defined in the glossary. Learning objectives in each chapter focus your attention on essential information. Supplemental readings in each chapter cite texts and journal articles for further research and study. Conversion Factors on the inside back cover provides a list of common metric conversions. Expert authors are well recognized in the fields of dental materials, oral biomaterials, and restorative dentistry.
