Is there a framework to help the nursing researcher make sense of the wide variety of research methods now available? Is there a context in which the research designer can consider which method is most appropriate to her or his specific study, given the research topic and the extent of research that has gone before? The answer to both of these questions is an emphatic yes!--as seen in this second edition of Pamela J. Brink and Marilynn J. WoodÆs seminal work, Advanced Design in Nursing Research. Using the principle that "the level of knowledge available on a research topic determines the level of design that can be used to study that topic," the authors clearly and succinctly present discussions of research at the three levels of design, moving from rigidly controlled, theoretically-based experimental designs to comparative and correlational survey designs, and concluding with the exploratory-descriptive research designs that frequently initiate the study of a topic. Within the basic categories, authoritative researchers explore a broad range of specific design types, noting their characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, applicability to nursing research, ethical considerations, reliability and validity, and methods of data analysis. Advanced Design in Nursing Research, Second Edition provides not only a context for design decision making, but an orientation and point of departure for the research design process itself. These features make this volume an excellent text for advanced-level nursing students and a superb library addition for the researcher or clinician desiring a comprehensive self reference on research design.

Nursing Research written by Michael Hardey and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-11 with Medical categories.

ABOUT THIS BOOK For the last 40 years nursing research has been struggling to establish its theoretical roots and legitimate place within the wider arena of research in the health sciences. Overshadowed by the medical endeavour, both resources and support have been meagre. Initially this medical hegemony also restricted the range of research designs by favouring the quantitative approaches that have formed the backbone of much clinical research. However, despite these restrictions, nursing research has developed a particular diversity which matches the eclec ticism of the discipline itself. Nursing and nurses have rapidly recognized that health-related research problems often require a multi-faceted approach that can be realized most effectively through multi-disciplinary activities. Not unexpectedly, however, individual researchers have frequently remained entrenched in the particular methodologies with which they are familiar and have only reluctantly (and perhaps wisely) ventured beyond these. In contrast, the aim of this book has been to gather together material that reflects the diversity and richness of research in nursing. To juxtapose different designs springing from different epistemologies, with the aim of stimulating a more holistic approach. It hopes to provide readers with an understanding of nursing research through a consideration of the issues involved.

Mixed methods research combines quantitative and qualitative research methods in a single study. The use of mixed methods research is increasingly popular in nursing and health sciences research. This growth in popularity has been driven by the increasing complexity of research problems relating to human health and wellbeing. Mixed Method Research for Nursing and the Health Sciences is an accessible, practical guide to the design, conduct and reporting of mixed method research in nursing or the health sciences. Each chapter stands alone, describing the various steps of the research process, but contains links to other chapters. Within the text, ‘real-life’ examples from the published literature, doctoral theses and the unpublished work of the authors, illustrate the concepts being discussed. Places mixed methods research within its contemporary context Includes international contributions from UK, Australia, NZ and USA Provides an accessible introduction to theoretical and philosophical underpinnings Demystifies strategies for analysing mixed methods data Examines strategies for publishing mixed methods research Includes learning objectives and exemplars in each chapter Final chapters provide ‘real-life’ examples of applied research About the Authors: Sharon Andrew is Head of Program (Postgraduate) and Elizabeth J.
