In recent years, the fabrication technologies for the production of advanced polymer composites have been revolutionised by sophisticated manufacturing techniques. These methods have enabled polymer composite materials to produce good quality laminates with minimal voids and accurate fibre alignment. This book familiarises and provides a background to the understanding and use of advanced polymer composites in the civil infrastructure; numerous examples have been provided to illustrate the use and versatility of the material. Furthermore, the book discusses the current fabrication techniques, design methods and formulae for the design of structural composite systems. In addition it discusses the fundamentals of geosynthetics used in geotechnical engineering. The book introduces the fibres and matrices that are used to manufacture composites, their mechanical and in-service properties and their long term loading characteristics; all these properties are specifically associated with the construction industry. The chapters then discuss the design aspects for 'all composite' units, as well as systems used for the renewal of civil infrastructure. Finally, the book demonstrated the unique possibilities of combining composites with conventional materials to form units in which the various materials making up the unit are loaded in the mode that specifically suits their mechanical characteristics.

Fibre/polymer (FRP) composites are used to form civil engineering structural materials, but they require scientific understanding from which design procedures may be developed. The book will discuss the current and the recently developed construction FRP composites and their components. Particular attention will be paid to their properties, their design and their sustainable aspects. It will illustrate how these materials are becoming major competitors to other established civil engineering materials. The book will develop the uses in construction of FRP composite materials from hybrid structures formed by combining polymer composite materials and traditional construction materials, to all FRP composite structures. It will explore the utilisation of FRP composites in sustainable systems. Bio-composites and their components will be discussed in terms of buildings and structures. Up-to-date theoretical/experimental information provides guidance for designers (in particular regarding Eurocodes) while review of current limitations will enable academia to understand knowledge gaps that need to be filled Recent and wide-ranging case studies provide practical examples and advice for clients and contractors to understand the benefits of FRP technology Sustainability aspects of FRP composites provides a Vital update to all professionals in a subject that is becoming more important (partly due to regulation), and that will continue to do so

Following the success of ACIC 2002, this is the 2nd International Conference focusing on the application and further exploitation of advanced composites in construction held at the University of Surrey in April 2004. With over 100 delegates the conference brought together practicing engineers, asset managers, researchers and representatives of regulatory bodies to promote the active exchange of scientific and technical information on the rapidly changing scene of advanced composites in construction. The aim of the conference was to encourage the presentation of new concepts, techniques and case studies, which will lead to greater exploitation of advanced polymer composites and FRP materials for the civil engineering infrastructure, rehabilitation and renewal.

High Performance Construction Materials Science And Applications written by Caijun Shi and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-11 with Technology & Engineering categories.
This book describes a number of high-performance construction materials, including concrete, steel, fiber-reinforced cement, fiber-reinforced plastics, polymeric materials, geosynthetics, masonry materials and coatings. It discusses the scientific bases for the manufacture and use of these high-performance materials. Testing and application examples are also included, in particular the application of relatively new high-performance construction materials to design practice. Most books dealing with construction materials typically address traditional materials only rather than high-performance materials and, as a consequence, do not satisfy the increasing demands of today's society. On the other hand, books dealing with materials science are not engineering-oriented, with limited coverage of the application to engineering practice. This book is thus unique in reflecting the great advances made on high-performance construction materials in recent years. This book is appropriate for use as a textbook for courses in engineering materials, structural materials and civil engineering materials at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also suitable for use by practice engineers, including construction, materials, mechanical and civil engineers.
