Digitalisation has led to a noticeable change for jobs and working tasks, leaving almost no field of work unchanged. The development of recent technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced robotics, has established new possibilities for task automation and revived the debate especially on work-related psychosocial and organisational aspects and on workers' safety and health. In order to address emerging risks and to highlight implications related to occupational safety and health (OSH) adequately, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has launched the 4-year research programme 'OSH overview on digitalisation' with the aim to develop and disseminate further information on the challenges and opportunities for OSH associated with digitalisation. The OSH overview consists of five main projects on the following topics: advanced robotics and AI-based systems for automation of tasks; new forms of worker management through AI-based systems; online platform work; new systems for the monitoring of workers' safety and health; and remote and virtual work. The aim of this report is, following the taxonomy developed in EU-OSHA's report "Advanced robotics, artificial intelligence and the automation of tasks: definitions, uses, policies and strategies and occupational safety and health" (EU-OSHA, 2022a), to present OSH-related challenges and opportunities regarding the automation of physical tasks through robotic systems, including cobots.

Automating tasks through technological advancements has been an ongoing process in many industries. This development can also significantly impact occupational safety and health (OSH) in a work environment. It allows removing workers from hazardous situations and improving the quality of work. This can be accomplished by automating repetitive and strenuous physical tasks with accurate and tireless machines like intelligent and artificial intelligence (AI)-based robotic systems or by automating cognitively strenuous tasks through AI-based information and communication technologies (ICT). Some tasks might not be fully automated, but workers can still receive support through, for example, cobots, which are collaborative robots operating in a shared space with workers. An increasing number of companies employ AI and/or advanced robotics. Although still in their infancy in terms of deployment, AI-based systems for the automation of both cognitive and physical tasks, as well as intelligent cobots, show promise in a variety of sectors. However, more information is needed about how they are implemented and managed in the workplace to help ensure their safe and healthy implementation in present, as well as in future, applications. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has developed a number of case studies with the aim to investigate the practical implementation of AI-based systems for the automation of physical and cognitive tasks and of intelligent cobots in the workplace, their impact on workers, how OSH is managed in relation to such systems, and to gain a better understanding of the drivers, barriers and success factors for the safe and healthy implementation of these systems. To identify those case studies, several key informants at the EU and international levels, such as workers' representatives and industry associations representing the targeted sectors, were consulted. This consultation and interviews will involved stakeholders resulted in 11 case studies (ID1-ID11) that were fully developed and another 5 shorter case studies (ID12-ID16), that include only basic information, focusing on workplaces that are actually using these technologies. This comparative report is based on these 11 case studies (ID1-ID11) and includes short descriptions and categorisations of each case study. Furthermore, it contains a detailed analysis of the systems' impact on the workers, work environments and tasks. Based on the case studies, there is an overview of all identified opportunities and challenges associated with the named technologies. The findings of the case studies are also contextualised with the results of the preceding literature analysis included in EU-OSHA's publications on advanced robotics and AI based systems for the automation of tasks, with a focus on where practical experience might deviate from current research trends.

The Fourth International Conference on Advanced Robotics was held in Columbus, Ohio, U. S. A. on June 13th to 15th, 1989. The first two conferences in this series were held in Tokyo. The third was held in Versailles, France in October 1987. The International Conference on Advanced Robotics is affiliated with the International Federation of Robotics. This conference was sponsored by The Ohio State University. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers was a cooperating co-sponsor. The objective of the International Conference on Advanced Robotics is to provide an international exchange of information on the topic of advanced robotics. This was adopted as one of the themes for international research cooperation at a meeting of representatives of seven industrialized countries held in Williamsburg, U. S. A. in May 1983. The present conference is truly international in character with contributions from authors of twelve countries. (Bulgaria, Canada, France, Great Britain, India, Italy, Japan, Peoples Republic of China, Poland, Republic of China, Spain, United States of America.) The subject matter of the papers is equally diverse, covering most technical areas of robotics. The authors are distinguished. They are leaders in the field in their respective countries. The International Conference on Advanced Robotics has always particularly encouraged papers oriented to the design of robotic systems, or to research directed at advanced applications in service robotics, construction, nuclear power, agriculture, mining, underwater systems, and space systems.
