Wood is usually perceived as a "traditional" material. However, the properties of this material have now for some time made it possible to design free shapes and highly complex structures. Today, the wood laboratory of the EPF Lausanne, which was originally founded by Julius Natterer, is testing the production of origami structures, ribbed shells, fabric structures and curved panels under the guidance of Professor Weinand using digital calculation and computer-aided processing methods. The research results are tested in prototypes, which demonstrate the potential applications in large-scale timber buildings. By exploring the hitherto unused potential of wood as a construction material, this book provides an exciting and inspiring outlook on a new generation of timber buildings.

Digital Wood Design written by Fabio Bianconi and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-24 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book explores various digital representation strategies that could change the future of wooden architectures by blending tradition and innovation. Composed of 61 chapters, written by 153 authors hailing from 5 continents, 24 countries and 69 research centers, it addresses advanced digital modeling, with a particular focus on solutions involving generative models and dynamic value, inherent to the relation between knowing how to draw and how to build. Thanks to the potential of computing, areas like parametric design and digital manufacturing are opening exciting new avenues for the future of construction. The book’s chapters are divided into five sections that connect digital wood design to integrated approaches and generative design; to model synthesis and morphological comprehension; to lessons learned from nature and material explorations; to constructive wisdom and implementation-related challenges; and to parametric transfigurations and morphological optimizations.

Over the past 10-15 years a renaissance in wood architecture has occurred with the development of new wood building systems and design strategies, elevating wood from a predominantly single-family residential idiom to a rival of concrete and steel construction for a variety of building types, including high rises. This new solid wood architecture offers unparalleled environmental as well as construction and aesthetic benefits, and is of growing importance for professionals and academics involved in green design. Solid Wood provides the first detailed book which allows readers to understand new mass timber/massive wood architecture. It provides: historical context in wood architecture from around the world a strong environmental rationale for the use of wood in buildings recent developments in contemporary fire safety and structural issues insights into building code challenges detailed case studies of new large-scale wood building systems on a country-by-country basis. Case studies from the UK, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Italy, Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Australia highlight design strategies, construction details and unique cultural attitudes in wood design. The case studies include the most ambitious academic, hospitality, industrial, multi-family, and wood office buildings in the world. With discussions from leading architectural, engineering, and material manufacturing firms in Europe, North America and the South Pacific, Solid Wood disrupts preconceived notions and serves as an indispensable guide to twenty-first century wood architecture and its environmental and cultural benefits.

Structural Timber Design To Eurocode 5 written by Jack Porteous and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-05-23 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Structural Timber Design to Eurocode 5 is a comprehensive book which provides practising engineers and specialist contractors with detailed information and in-depth guidance on the design of timber structures based on the common rules and rules for buildings in Eurocode 5 - Part 1-1. It will also be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil and structural engineering. The book provides a step-by-step approach to the design of all of the most commonly used timber elements and connections using solid timber, glued laminated timber or wood based structural products. It features numerous detailed worked examples, and incorporates the requirements of the UK National Annex. It covers the strength and stiffness properties of timber and its reconstituted and engineered products; the key requirements of Eurocode 0, Eurocode 1 and Eurocode 5 - Part 1-1; the design of beams and columns of solid timber, glued laminated, composite and thin-webbed sections; the lateral stability requirements of timber structures; and the design of mechanical connections subjected to lateral and/or axial forces as well as rigid and semi-rigid connections subjected to a moment. The Authors Jack Porteous is a consulting engineer specialising in timber engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers. He is a visiting scholar and lecturer in timber engineering at Napier University. Abdy Kermani is the Professor of Timber Engineering and R&D consultant at Napier University. He is a Chartered Engineer, Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers and Fellow of the Institute of Wood Science with over 20 years' experience in civil and structural engineering research, teaching and practice. The authors have led several research and development programmes on the structural use of timber and its reconstituted products. Their research work in timber engineering is internationally recognised and published widely. Also of Interest Timber Designers' Manual Third Edition E.C. Ozelton & J.A. Design Of Integrally Attached Timber Plate Structures written by Yves Weinand and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-27 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Design of Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures outlines a new design methodology for digitally fabricated spatial timber plate structures, presented with examples from recent construction projects. It proposes an innovative and sustainable design methodology, algorithmic geometry processing, structural optimization, and digital fabrication; technology transfer and construction are formulated and widely discussed. The methodology relies on integral mechanical attachment whereby the connection between timber plates is established solely through geometric manipulation, without additional connectors, such as nails, screws, dowels, adhesives, or welding. The transdisciplinary design framework for spatial timber plate structures brings together digital architecture, computer science, and structural engineering, covering parametric modeling and architectural computational design, geometry exploration, the digital fabrication assembly of engineered timber panels, numerical simulations, mechanical characterization, design optimization, and performance improvement. The method is demonstrated through different prototypes, physical models, and three build examples, focusing specifically on the design of the timber-plate roof structure of 23 large span arches called the Annen Headquarters in Luxembourg. This is useful for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector and shows how new structural optimization processes can be reinvented through geometrical adaptions to control global and local geometries of complex structures. This text is ideal for structural engineering professionals and architects in both industry and academia, and construction companies.

Through detailed analysis of case studies and engineering data, it demonstrates how timber construction represents a viable response to growing environmental challenges while meeting modern architectural demands. The book's three-part structure guides readers from fundamental material science through design considerations to practical implementation. In the material science section, readers discover in-depth coverage of wood species selection and structural properties, while the design segment addresses crucial architectural considerations and building codes. The implementation section provides valuable insights into construction scheduling and project management, making it an invaluable resource for professionals at every stage of timber construction projects. What sets this work apart is its multidisciplinary approach, combining insights from forestry science, structural engineering, and environmental studies. While maintaining technical accuracy, it presents information in an accessible format suitable for architects, engineers, and contractors. The book's comprehensive treatment of both small-scale residential projects and larger commercial applications, supported by international case studies and laboratory testing results, makes it an essential reference for anyone involved in modern sustainable architecture.
