In recent years, the paradigm of video coding has shifted from that of a frame-based approach to a content-based approach, particularly with the finalization of the ISO multimedia coding standard, MPEG-4. MPEG-4 is the emerging standard for the coding of multimedia content. It defines a syntax for a set of content-based functionalities, namely, content-based interactivity, compression and universal access. However, it does not specify how the video content is to be generated. To generate the video content, video has to be segmented into video objects and tracked as they transverse across the video frames. This book addresses the difficult problem of video segmentation, and the extraction and tracking of video object planes as defined in MPEG-4. It then focuses on the specific issue of face segmentation and coding as applied to videoconferencing in order to improve the quality of videoconferencing images especially in the facial region. Modal-based coding is a content-based coding technique used to code synthetic objects that have become an important part of video content. It results in extremely low bit rates because only the parameters needed to represent the modal are transmitted. Model-based coding is included to provide background information for the synthetic object coding in MPEG-4. Lastly, MPEG-4, the first coding standard for multimedia content is described in detail. The topics covered include the coding of audio objects, the coding of natural and synthetic video objects, and error resilience. Advanced Video Coding is one of the first books on content-based coding and MPEG-4 coding standard. It serves as an excellent information source and reference for both researchers and practicing engineers.

Scalable Video Coding Principles Algorithms And Standards written by Mihaela Van Der Schaar and has been published by Elsevier Science this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The book covers the principles, algorithms, and standards of state-of-the-art scalable video coding methods that can support a wide range of Internet and wireless multimedia applications. The book starts with a general overview of scalable video coding including SNR, temporal, and spatial scalabilities that have been proposed since the development of the MPEG-2 standard. After the general overview, the book focuses on two of the most promising areas in scalable video coding. First, a thorough coverage of the MPEG-4 Fine-Granularity-Scalable (FGS) video coding method and many of the related early and recent work on FGS is provided. This includes many of the extensions (supported by MPEG-4) such as selective enhancement and frequency weighting, and new approaches (not covered by MPEG-4) such as motion-compensation based methods within the enhancement layer. Second, the book focuses on wavelets based video coding methods. In particular, selected Motion Compensation-Wavelets (MCW) video solutions are covered in detail. A variety of traditional and advanced MCW based methods, including ones that have been considered by the ISO MPEG committee under a new standardization activity, are covered in the book. A thorough coverage of the most popular scalable video coding methods Detail description of the latest video coding standard - MPGE-4 FGS - and all relevant extensions A selective yet thoroughgoing treatment of state-of-the-art Motion-Compensated Wavelets video coding algorithms and standardization activities Invaluable reference for engineers and professionals designing new and emerging wireless, mobile, and Internet multimedia applications and services Appropriate level of details for designing and implementing practical scalable video coding solutions Written by two of the most active and respected experts in the area
