Optimization is of critical importance in engineering. Engineers constantly strive for the best possible solutions, the most economical use of limited resources, and the greatest efficiency. As system complexity increases, these goals mandate the use of state-of-the-art optimization techniques. In recent years, the theory and methodology of optimization have seen revolutionary improvements. Moreover, the exponential growth in computational power, along with the availability of multicore computing with virtually unlimited memory and storage capacity, has fundamentally changed what engineers can do to optimize their designs. This is a two-way process: engineers benefit from developments in optimization methodology, and challenging new classes of optimization problems arise from novel engineering applications. Advances and Trends in Optimization with Engineering Applications reviews 10 major areas of optimization and related engineering applications, providing a broad summary of state-of-the-art optimization techniques most important to engineering practice. Each part provides a clear overview of a specific area and discusses a range of real-world problems. The book provides a solid foundation for engineers and mathematical optimizers alike who want to understand the importance of optimization methods to engineering and the capabilities of these methods.

Advances and Trends in Structures and Dynamics contains papers presented at the symposium on Advances and Trends in Structures and Dynamics held in Washington, D.C., on October 22-25, 1984. Separating 67 papers of the symposium as chapters, this book documents some of the major advances in the structures and dynamics discipline. The chapters are further organized into 13 parts. The first three parts explore the trends and advances in engineering software and hardware; numerical analysis and parallel algorithms; and finite element technology. Subsequent parts show computational strategies for nonlinear and fracture mechanics problems; mechanics of materials and structural theories; structural and dynamic stability; multidisciplinary and interaction problems; composite materials and structures; and optimization. Other chapters focus on random motion and dynamic response; tire modeling and contact problems; damping and control of spacecraft structures; and advanced structural applications.

Algorithms In Decision Support Systems written by Vicente García-Díaz and has been published by MDPI this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-19 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book aims to provide a new vision of how algorithms are the core of decision support systems (DSSs), which are increasingly important information systems that help to make decisions related to unstructured and semi-unstructured decision problems that do not have a simple solution from a human point of view. It begins with a discussion of how DSSs will be vital to improving the health of the population. The following article deals with how DSSs can be applied to improve the performance of people doing a specific task, like playing tennis. It continues with a work in which authors apply DSSs to insect pest management, together with an interactive platform for fitting data and carrying out spatial visualization. The next article improves how to reschedule trains whenever disturbances occur, together with an evaluation framework. The final works focus on different relevant areas of DSSs: 1) a comparison of ensemble and dimensionality reduction models based on an entropy criterion; 2) a radar emitter identification method based on semi-supervised and transfer learning; 3) design limitations, errors, and hazards in creating very large-scale DSSs; and 4) efficient rule generation for associative classification. We hope you enjoy all the contents in the book.

Lectures On Stochastic Programming Modeling And Theory Third Edition written by Alexander Shapiro and has been published by SIAM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-19 with Mathematics categories.

An accessible and rigorous presentation of contemporary models and ideas of stochastic programming, this book focuses on optimization problems involving uncertain parameters for which stochastic models are available. Since these problems occur in vast, diverse areas of science and engineering, there is much interest in rigorous ways of formulating, analyzing, and solving them. This substantially revised edition presents a modern theory of stochastic programming, including expanded and detailed coverage of sample complexity, risk measures, and distributionally robust optimization. It adds two new chapters that provide readers with a solid understanding of emerging topics; updates Chapter 6 to now include a detailed discussion of the interchangeability principle for risk measures; and presents new material on formulation and numerical approaches to solving periodical multistage stochastic programs. Lectures on Stochastic Programming: Modeling and Theory, Third Edition is written for researchers and graduate students working on theory and applications of optimization, with the hope that it will encourage them to apply stochastic programming models and undertake further studies of this fascinating and rapidly developing area.

Comprehensively teaches the fundamentals of supply chain theory This book presents the methodology and foundations of supply chain management and also demonstrates how recent developments build upon classic models. The authors focus on strategic, tactical, and operational aspects of supply chain management and cover a broad range of topics from forecasting, inventory management, and facility location to transportation, process flexibility, and auctions. Key mathematical models for optimizing the design, operation, and evaluation of supply chains are presented as well as models currently emerging from the research frontier. Fundamentals of Supply Chain Theory, Second Edition contains new chapters on transportation (traveling salesman and vehicle routing problems), integrated supply chain models, and applications of supply chain theory. New sections have also been added throughout, on topics including machine learning models for forecasting, conic optimization for facility location, a multi-supplier model for supply uncertainty, and a game-theoretic analysis of auctions. The second edition also contains case studies for each chapter that illustrate the real-world implementation of the models presented. This edition also contains nearly 200 new homework problems, over 60 new worked examples, and over 140 new illustrative figures. Plentiful teaching supplements are available, including an Instructor’s Manual and PowerPoint slides, as well as MATLAB programming assignments that require students to code algorithms in an effort to provide a deeper understanding of the material. Ideal as a textbook for upper-undergraduate and graduate-level courses in supply chain management in engineering and business schools, Fundamentals of Supply Chain Theory, Second Edition will also appeal to anyone interested in quantitative approaches for studying supply chains.

The Workshops on Autonomous Systems emanated from a gathering with the doctoral students of just three chairs at Fernuniversität in Hagen, which we organise twice per year for a number of years now. Their purpose is to discuss on-going research and to create a community spirit. Furthermore, they serve as a means of structuring the students' research processes. The workshop has grown and matured in several respects. The doctoral students presenting their work do not come from a single university anymore, but from three. Besides them and their supervisors, also other scientists became interested in the event and contribute to its programme. Following the model of Advanced Study Institutes, they are available on the premises for relaxed, informal discussions outside the formal sessions. Finally, with the co-sponsorship of Gesellschaft für Informatik, the German Computer Society, and this surprisingly comprehensive volume of contributions published by Springer-Verlag the workshop turned into a visible scientific event.
