The International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling (SDH) commenced in 1984, in Zurich, Switzerland, organized by the International Geographical Union Commission on Geographical Data Sensing and Processing which was later succeed by the Commission on Geographic Information Systems, Study Group on Geographical Information Science and then the Commission on Geographical Information Science (http://www. hku. hk/cupem/igugisc/). Previous symposia have been held at the following locations: 1st - Zurich, 1984 6th - Edinburgh, 1994 2nd - Seattle, 1986 7th - Delft, 1996 3rd - Sydney, 1988 8th - Vancouver, 1998 4th - Zurich, 1990 9th - Beijing, 2000 5th - Charleston, 1992 10th - Ottawa, 2002 th This book is the proceedings of the 11 International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling. The conference was held in Leicester, United rd th Kingdom, on August 23 to 25 2004, as a satellite meeting to the Congress of the International Geographical Union in Glasgow. The International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling is a refereed conference. All the papers in this book were submitted as full papers and reviewed by at least two members of the Programme Committee. 83 papers in all were submitted and among the 50 included here, all are considered above average by the reviewers. The papers cover the span of Geographical Information Science topics, which have always been the concern of the conference. Topics from uncertainty (error, vagueness, and ontology and semantics) to web issues, digital elevation models and urban infrastructure.

This book, entitled Advances in Spatial Data Handling, is a compendium of papers resulting from the International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling (SDH), held in Ottawa, Canada, July 9-12, 2002. The SDH conference series has been organised as one of the main activities of the International Geographical Union (IGU) since it was first started in Zurich in 1984. In the late 1990’s the IGU Commission of Geographic Information Systems was discontinued and a study group was formed to succeed it in 1997. Much like the IGU Commission, the objectives of the Study Group are to create a network of people and research centres addressing geographical information science and to facilitate exchange of information. The International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling, which is the most important activity of the IGU Study Group, has, throughout its 18 year history been highly regarded as one of the most important GIS conferences in the world.

Each chapter describes the nature of the problem, examines the purpose of the GIS application, describes methods used to develop the application, provides results, and offers a conclusion as well as other supportive information. When appropriate, it presents the underlying statistical approach for the GIS software that is used. This text also includes a CD-ROM that features data sets and the full color maps produced by the use of GIS.

The perspectives and techniques used in human-computer interaction design, practice and research are broadening. This book looks at emerging approaches which are likely to contribute to the discipline in near future. The underlying idea is that human character rather than technology should determine the nature of interaction. The concept of "interaction design" covers this range of concerns relevant to enabling quality design. Each chapter emphasizes alternative perspectives on interaction and new concepts to help researchers and practitioners relate to alternative design approaches and opportunities. This second volume provides a wider perspective, from both a scientific and geographic outlook. New topics, such as psychological design processes, gerotechnology, modelling, e-learning and subconscious experiences are discussed from a team of international authors. This book will be of considerable value to those seeking innovative perspectives upon designing and ensuring effective interaction between humans and technology.
