Advances in Liquid Crystals, Volume 5 is a collection of scientific essays that focuses on the developments and applications in the field of liquid crystal science. The text begins with an article about the role of liquid crystals in living systems. The subjects covered in this article include the properties of phospholipids, lipid order parameters, lipid diffusion, and the movements of proteins in model and natural biomembranes. The second essay discusses the use of Mossbauer techniques to lyotropic liquid crystals. Such a method provides a list of characteristics of the crystals in focus. Another topic of interest is the theoretical and experimental aspects of microemulsions. The section that follows describes the carbonaceous mesophases and disclination structures. Types of disclination such as wedge disclination, twist disclinations, and disclinations arrays are covered. The neutron incoherent scattering is the focus of the last essay in the book. The book will provide valuable insights for scientists, developer of crystal displays, students, and researchers in the field of chemistry.

Advances in Liquid Crystals, Volume 2 covers the study of lyotropic and thermotropic liquid crystals. The five articles in this volume discuss topics such as the effects of change in molecular geometry on the properties of liquid crystals formed by nonamphiphilic (thermotropic) compounds; aspects of the physics and chemistry of cholesteric liquid crystals with respect to temperature dependence and temperature sensitivity of the selective reflection of visible light; arrangements of emulsifier molecules and the interaction between the different components in emulsions; the type of information about liquid crystals obtained from vibrational spectroscopy; and the continuum theory of liquid crystals as it applies to static equilibrium. The book will be invaluable to materials engineers, inventors, physicists, and researchers in the field of electronics.

Advances in Liquid Crystals, Volume 6 is a collection of scientific essays that focuses on the developments and applications in the field of liquid crystal science. The text begins with an article about the smectic phases of substances with rodlike molecules in layered structures. This article focuses on the nematic phases of polymorphism that include cubic thermotropic phases and blue phases. A section of the book provides an extensive discussion of the means of experimental procedures used to evaluate the spectra and the implications of the spectral parameters. A critical analysis of the influence of molecular vibration including interdependence on the average order parameters is also included. The terms nuclear relaxation, quadrupole coupling constants, chemical shielding anisotropy, molecular order, and molecular structure and conformation are explained in detail. The last article briefly discusses the actions of liquid crystal systems in the muscle and connective tissue. The book will provide valuable insights for scientists, developers of crystal displays, students, and researchers in the field of chemistry.

Advances in Liquid Crystal Research and Applications, Volume 1 is a collection of papers presented at the Third Liquid Crystal Conference of the Socialist Countries, held in Budapest on August 27-31, 1979. This volume is comprised of three parts. The first part deals with the phases and structures of liquid crystals through methods employing synthesis, X-ray studies, electron diffraction, and calorimetric determination. The second part discusses molecular dynamics and dynamical methods where mostly dielectric investigations into liquid crystal properties are emphasized. This part includes the developments in the study of molecular dynamics in liquid crystals. Other topics presented in this part are the acousto-optical and ultrasonic relaxation methods. The third part covers the continual properties of liquid crystals: their properties and behavior when exposed to different testing methods and variables. For example, a correlation between viscosity coefficients of starting components and those of their mixtures is attempted, resulting when MBBA and EBBA in different percentages are mixed, that none of their coefficients is found to obey any pronounced law. However, the viscosity coefficients given in the table may serve as reference data for further studies. Physicists; process engineers; and graduate students in physics, chemistry, and materials science fields; and university professors and lecturers related to studies in the field of liquid crystals will find this collection of papers highly informative and rewarding.

Advances in Liquid Crystals, Volume 3 presents some of the applications of liquid crystals, particularly those related to lyotropic and thermotropic liquid crystals. The six articles in this volume cover the development of the theory of electrohydrodynamic properties of liquid crystals; study of lyotropic liquid crystals in the area of surfactants; liquid crystals and foams; the development of ultrasonics in liquid crystal media; and the field of liquid crystals in chromatography. The book will be invaluable to materials engineers, inventors, physicists, and researchers in the field of electronics.

Advances in Liquid Crystals, Volume 4 is a collection of papers that deals with liquid crystal sciences, particularly the flow problems in liquid crystals, the effects of high pressure on liquid crystals, lyotropic and thermotropic polymeric liquid crystals, and the light-scattering properties of thermotropic liquid crystals. One paper reviews the continuum theory in flow problems in liquid crystals, presents theoretical predictions, and compares these with associated observations. High-pressure experiments in liquid crystals pave the way for discoveries involving pressure-induced mesomorphism in certain materials, suppression of mesophases, tricritical phase transitions, and re-entrant behavior. Another paper describes the types of macromolecular structures that have a propensity for mesomorphism — linear, conventional types of polymers, such as block copolymers and graft copolymers. Another paper examines the application of light scattering in fluctuations that happens during the liquid crystalline phases. The paper investigates the assumption that light is scattered by inhomogeneities in the dialectric constant of the medium it is passing through. This collection can prove useful for scientists in liquid crystals, and industrial researchers in the field of advanced chemistry and physics.

Another paper describes the ordering and structure of liquid crystals by reviewing research work on X-ray analysis of thermotropic liquid crystals. One paper explains the studies made on the mesomorphic behavior of block copolymers, including the incompatibility, segregation, and organization of polymers. The paper notes that plastic crystals and liquid crystals are different manifestations of the duality of the melting process in molecular crystals, resulting in the loss of positional and orientation order. One paper describes the essential linear defects found in solid crystals, which have been researched in terms of the major role they play in macroscopic properties, particularly plasticity, as the defects or dislocations of translation. G. Friedel's work classifies liquid crystals into an intermediary symmetry composed of the nematic, the cholesteric, and the smectic phases. This intermediary symmetry occurs between the liquid type symmetry and the solid type symmetry. This collection can prove useful for researchers in liquid crystals and industrial scientists in the field of chemistry and polymer composites.
