Winner of the 2015 Auburn Authors AwardsWhere is higher education as a field of study going in this century? How will higher education program leaders design and sustain their degree programs’ vitality in the face of perennial challenges from inside and outside the academy? While in 1979 the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) defined standards for student affairs master’s level preparation, and while 2010 saw the adoption of guidelines for higher education administration and leadership preparation programs at the master’s degree level, there still are, however, no guidelines that address higher education leadership doctoral programs, despite increasing demands for assessment and evaluation. This book suggests that higher education administration doctoral degree guidelines are a critical next step in advancing their program quality and continuity. It offers a review of the field’s history, the condition of its higher education programs, developments from the student affairs specialization and its guidelines, and a multi-chapter dialogue on the benefits or disadvantages of having guidelines. At a time of urgency to prepare the next generation of higher education faculty and leaders, this book sets out the parameters for the debate about what the guidelines should cover to ensure the appropriate and effective preparation of students. It also offers a useful framework for enriching the knowledge of deans, chairs, program coordinators and faculty who are engaged in program design, assessment, and revision. It will also be of interest to policymakers, the personnel of accrediting agencies, and not least graduate students within higher education preparation programs. All the contributors to this volume have the exemplary expertise, leadership experience, and a close association with higher education guidelines and standards, and have extensively contributed to the literature on higher education.

Self-directed learning (SDL) is considered a core concept in problem-based learning (PBL) and student-centered learning. More importantly, the current face-to-face model of curriculum implementation faces many challenges that seem to question its dominance over other models. The violent nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has again vindicated SDL practitioners and research enthusiasts to continue seeking solutions that will enhance skills to cope in a rapidly changing technological, globalized world. However, the higher education sector is challenged when promoting SDL due to a slow pace of digital integration since the education system is not fully transformed. This has necessitated an urgent need for global discourse on how universities globally are implementing SDL strategies to enhance the quality of curriculum delivery. Advancing Self-Directed Learning in Higher Education provides insight into various strategic approaches that could be adopted for the successful implementation of SDL in higher education. It is written for professionals who want to improve their understanding of how to improve student teaching and learning and the quality of curriculum implementation in higher education. In this realm, this book provides ideas to its readers about the approaches pertaining to strategy and innovative measures, practical implementations, and tools in the field of curriculum and SDL. Covering topics such as educational technology, intentional education practice theory, and student experience, this premier reference source is an essential resource for teachers, policymakers, lecturers, research scholars, students of higher education, administrators, librarians, academicians, and researchers.

The importance of critical thinking has surged as academics in higher education realize that many students, upon entering college, lack the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed. While much has been written regarding the ‘lack’ of critical thinking, less has been written on the success of methods implemented to develop this fundamental skill. The Handbook of Research on Advancing Critical Thinking in Higher Education explores the effective methods and tools being used to integrate the development of critical thinking skills in both undergraduate and graduate studies. Due to the difficulties associated with teaching critical thinking skills to learners of any age, this publication is a crucial addition to the scholarly reference works available to pre-service and early career teachers, seasoned educational professionals, professors across disciplines, curriculum specialists, and educational administrators.

By problematising student engagement practice, this book explores how to strengthen policies, recognise the issues, and create solutions to overcome barriers and tensions. It considers topics such as diversity, accessibility, representativeness, evidencing impact, data analytics, the campus estate, and the impact of COVID-19. The contributors provide lessons learned and knowledge from the field to make practice with students more considered and robust for the challenges ahead in the post-pandemic University. Moving beyond endorsing student engagement and offering best practice to critically reflect and challenge on our engagements with students in contemporary higher education, this book is ideal reading for all those developing education, course leaders and heads of academic departments, as well as anyone interested in advancing student engagement in their higher education setting.

"This book offers context, research, policy, and practice-based recommendations centering college access and success for a historically overlooked population: rural Students and Communities of Color. Through an exploration of how colleges and universities can effectively welcome students from rural areas who identify as Asian and Pacific Islander, Black and African American, Hispanic and Latinx, and/or Indigenous, this text challenges the misleading narrative that rural is white, thereby placing these students and their communities in conversation with national higher education discourse. Rich contributions on scholarship, practice, and policy address the intersection of racism and spatial inequities and consider the unique opportunities and challenges that rural Students and Communities of Color face across the United States' higher education landscape. Chapters provide direction on creating equitable policies and practices, as well as details of the assets, resources, and networks that support this population's success. This edited collection provides a wealth of insight into the recruitment, access, persistence, and retention of rural Students of Color, equipping higher education researchers, practitioners, administrators, and policymakers with the knowledge they need to better account for and support rural students and communities across race and ethnicity"--

This book comprehensively covers the evolution of advanced learning pedagogy and innovative technologies like open educational resources and blended learning models. It specifically talks about the future of technology-enhanced learning and how advanced technology and government policies together are trying to impact learning outcomes globally. Nowadays in a flexible learning environment, technology plays a significant role in higher education systems. Both educators and students are playing prominent roles in its successful implementation. Advanced learning pedagogy by using technology has not only changed teaching procedures but has also evolved the relationship among multiple stakeholders. The content of the book is neatly segregated into four parts. Part I covers the concept and evolution of digital learning and education technology. This part examines the role of technology in higher education and proposes a toolkit for personalized learning and continuous assessment. Parts II and III creatively represent the innovative teaching techniques and learning models under advance learning pedagogy. Chapters under parts II and III are specially designed to present the more simplistic view of various technology-based advanced learning models and resources like flipped classes, gaming designs for e-learning, etc. Part III of the book also extensively covers various case studies/instructor’s stories of technology enabled learning experiences. Part IV focuses on the evaluation of advance learning pedagogy and tools. It also covers the future of information in learning (like formative analytics) and improved learning outcomes using technology and government initiatives in the form of various future oriented education policies like the Digital Action Education Plan (2021–2027). The wide-ranging content also covers the challenges of implementation of advanced learning pedagogy and offers recommendations to overcome such challenges. The book will grab the attention of the modern (IT-enabled) instructor’s fraternity, and students and researchers in the area of technology and education. The book can be further used by policymakers and educational-technology startups to formulate and design technology-based higher education teaching policies and procedures which are indeed helpful in measuring learning outcomes.
