The ocean is an integral component of the Earth's climate system. It covers about 70% of the Earth's surface and acts as its primary reservoir of heat and carbon, absorbing over 90% of the surplus heat and about 30% of the carbon dioxide associated with human activities, and receiving close to 100% of fresh water lost from land ice. With the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, notably carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion, the Earth's climate is now changing more rapidly than at any time since the advent of human societies. Society will increasingly face complex decisions about how to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change such as droughts, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, species loss, changes to growing seasons, and stronger and possibly more frequent storms. Observations play a foundational role in documenting the state and variability of components of the climate system and facilitating climate prediction and scenario development. Regular and consistent collection of ocean observations over decades to centuries would monitor the Earth's main reservoirs of heat, carbon dioxide, and water and provides a critical record of long-term change and variability over multiple time scales. Sustained high-quality observations are also needed to test and improve climate models, which provide insights into the future climate system. Sustaining Ocean Observations to Understand Future Changes in Earth's Climate considers processes for identifying priority ocean observations that will improve understanding of the Earth's climate processes, and the challenges associated with sustaining these observations over long timeframes.

The International Conference for Young Marine Researchers ICYMARE is a recently founded bottom-up-driven networking initiative. ICYMARE conducts an annual on-site conference event as well as a monthly Online Forum to foster international exchange and networking among marine early career researchers. In both cases, on-site conference and Online Forum, the early careers organize and conduct the whole event but also identify the conference topics and prepare and moderate their topical sessions. This Research Topic aims to feature articles authored by early career researchers who were involved as a conference or Online Forum session hosts in the ICYMARE initiative. As emerging experts in their respective fields of marine science, they are invited to contribute review articles on specific topics within the topical frame of their ICYMARE conference session. Thus, articles on this Research Topic may come from all fields of marine sciences as it reflects the scope of the ICYMARE conferences.

The author presents a balanced, neutral analysis that respects the concerns and aspirations of both nations while focusing on the tremendous potential for mutual benefit through peaceful engagement. Through carefully crafted chapters, readers are guided through various domains where Ukrainian-Russian cooperation is not just possible but potentially transformative: - Economic partnerships that could drive growth and prosperity on both sides of the border - Cultural exchanges that celebrate shared heritage while respecting distinct national identities - Scientific collaborations that could position the region as a global hub for innovation - Joint efforts to address pressing humanitarian and environmental challenges A Vision for the Future More than just an academic exercise, this book offers a vision of a future where Ukraine and Russia move beyond current conflicts to forge a relationship based on mutual respect, shared interests, and a commitment to the well-being of their peoples. Hoicka argues persuasively that such a transformation is not only desirable but necessary for regional stability and global progress. Practical Insights for Peacebuilding "Mediation Common Ground in Ukraine Russia" goes beyond theoretical discussions to offer practical insights and strategies for building bridges between the two nations. Drawing on successful examples of conflict resolution from around the world, Hoicka presents innovative approaches to dialogue, trust-building, and collaborative problem-solving that could pave the way for meaningful reconciliation. Key features of the book include: - In-depth analysis of historical, cultural, and economic ties between Ukraine and Russia - Case studies of successful cooperation in various fields, even during times of tension - Interviews with experts, policymakers, and citizens from both countries, providing diverse perspectives on the potential for peace - Concrete recommendations for policymakers, business leaders, and civil society organizations on fostering dialogue and collaboration Why Read This Book?
