A classroom full of students can be overwhelming for teachers. It is critical that teachers are able to filter and meaningfully interpret the relevant information in this complex scenario. Much of this filtering and interpretation occurs through selective visual perception. Over the last decade, a rapidly growing number of studies in empirical educational research used eye tracking to investigate teachers' selective visual perceptual processes in the classroom. Theoretically, visual attention and perception are often conceptualized as knowledge-based noticing coupled with knowledge-based reasoning about what is visually perceived. Recent eye-tracking studies have shown that experienced teachers, in particular, show improved selective attention of classroom events through faster detection of relevant information and improved monitoring of learning-relevant situations. Researchers agree that a critical driver of selective attention processes is the professional knowledge (declarative, procedural, and metacognitive) of (experienced) teachers, which controls selective perceptual processes in a top-down process. The findings are significant and provide important insights for research on teacher professionalization.

This book addresses the issues confronting educators in the integration of digital technologies into their teaching and their students’ learning. Such issues include a skepticism of the added value of technology to educational learning outcomes, the perception of the requirement to keep up with the fast pace of technological innovation, a lack of knowledge of affordable educational digital tools and a lack of understanding of pedagogical strategies to embrace digital technologies in their teaching. This book presents theoretical perspectives of learning and teaching today’s digital students with technology and propose a pragmatic and sustainable framework for teachers’ professional learning to embed digital technologies into their repertoire of teaching strategies in a systematic, coherent and comfortable manner so that technology integration becomes an almost effortless pedagogy in their day-to-day teaching. The materials in this book are comprised of original and innovative contributions, including empirical data, to existing scholarship in this field. Examples of pedagogical possibilities that are both new and currently practised across a range of teaching contexts are featured.

Video Research in the Learning Sciences is a comprehensive exploration of key theoretical, methodological, and technological advances concerning uses of digital video-as-data in the learning sciences as a way of knowing about learning, teaching, and educational processes. The aim of the contributors, a community of scholars using video in their own work, is to help usher in video scholarship and supportive technologies, and to mentor video scholars, so that video research will meet its maximum potential to contribute to the growing knowledge base about teaching and learning. This volume contributes deeply to both to the science of learning through in-depth video studies of human interaction in learning environments—whether classrooms or other contexts—and to the uses of video for creating descriptive, explanatory, or expository accounts of learning and teaching. It is designed around four themes—each with a cornerstone chapter that introduces and synthesizes the cluster of chapters related to it: Theoretical frameworks for video research; Video research on peer, family, and informal learning; Video research on classroom and teacher learning; and Video collaboratories and technological futures. Video Research in the Learning Sciences is intended for researchers, university faculty, teacher educators, and graduate students in education, and for anyone interested in how knowledge is expanded using video-based technologies for inquiries about learning and teaching. The last decade has seen significant progress in technology, particularly in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, which have had a profound impact on numerous industries, including education. The integration of technology in education has fundamentally altered the landscape of learning where data becomes a crucial component to provide insights into for example how students learn, when and where additional support is needed. Employing educational data is proving to be a catalyst for innovation in education, opening up new possibilities for students and educators alike. The focus of this Research Topic is to explore the impact of recent technological innovations and advances (such as AI, AI-powered Chatbots, Learning Analytics, Virtual and Augmented Reality, and remote and virtual labs) on different education systems, both from the educational and the psychological perspective. The scope is twofold; on the one hand, examining the use of these advanced technologies in learning and teaching activities; and on the other hand; teaching students about these technologies and understanding the impact of including them in new education policies and curricula (including teaching of AI, data science, analytics and the ethical implications of data). The Research Topic seeks to provide insightful and thought-provoking perspectives on how technology is being utilized to enhance the learning experience for students of all ages, Both in higher education and K12 education and their transition to higher education. By gathering experts in psychology, education, and technology, this Research Topic aims to present research findings and best practices and to stimulate discussions on the role of technology in shaping the future of education. The ultimate objective is to inspire innovation and to improve the education of future generations through advanced technologies.
