'A great storyteller . . . you would be hard pushed to find a more knowledgeable or entertaining [guide]' Icon 'Such an interesting book . . . I cannot recommend it enough.' Lauren Laverne In Dubai, a luxury apartment block is built in the shape of a giant iPod. In China, President Xi Jinping denounces the trend of constructing ‘bizarre’ new buildings in wacky shapes and colours. In Cincinnati, celebrity architect Zaha Hadid is paid millions to design a single ‘iconic’ structure – with the hope of single-handedly transforming the region’s ailing fortunes. These incidents are all part of the same story: the rise of the age of spectacle. Over the last fifty years, there has been a revolution in how our cities operate. In The Age of Spectacle, Tom Dyckhoff tells the story of how architecture became obsessed with the flashy, the monumental and the ostentatious – and how we all have to live with the consequences. Exploring cityscapes from New York to Beijing, and from Bilbao to Portsmouth, Dyckhoff shows that we are not just witnessing a new kind of building: we are living through a fundamental transformation in how our urban spaces work. The corporate explosion of the last few decades has fundamentally shifted the relationship between architects, politicians and cities’ inhabitants, fostering innovative new kinds of engineering and design, but also facilitating ill-conceived vanity projects and commercial power-grabs. Timely, passionate and bursting with new ideas, The Age of Spectacle is both an examination of how twenty-first century cities work, and a manifesto for a radically new kind of urbanism. Our cities, Dyckhoff shows, can thrive in the age of spectacle – but only if they engage us not just with dazzling structures, but by responding to the needs of the people who inhabit them. 'Engaging . . . The “iconic” building is the most obvious architectural phenomenon of our age yet, somehow, no one has quite done what Tom Dyckhoff does with The Age of Spectacle, which is to tell its story clearly and plainly.' Rowan Moore, Observer 'First class. Finally, a book that nails the iconic movement – Tom Dyckhoff’s The Age of Spectacle is the book that I wish I had written.' Simon Jenkins 'Unusually accessible [and] well argued.' Evening Standard

Adventures In Architecture written by Dan Cruickshank and has been published by Phoenix Press (UK) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Architecture categories.

Dan takes us to the buildings he believes have changed the world, revealing how in truly great buildings function, material and purpose connect to all other parts of life - showing how architecture is the richest and most complex of man's artistic endeavours. Do his chosen buildings live up to expectation, or does he find disappointment and lost ideals? Architecture is an art, a science and a craft. But buildings also have to fulfil a function, cater for human use, withstand the forces of nature, and be built to a budget. Dan considers all these aspects as he looks at places, some well known, many less so, as varied as the Catherine Palace in St Petersburg, the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan, the Hanging Temple in Shanxi in China, Astana in Kazakhstan, Brasilia, Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, the Lupanare Brothels in Pompeii, and the building of an igloo, man's earliest exercise in the creation of shelter, in Greenland.

Here, in words and pictures, is the most exciting architectural story since the building of the great medieval churches in Europe, the grand plan on which a monastic community in Collegeville, Minnesota, and a world-famous architect -Marcel Breuer- have embarked. At the beginning, the Benedictine community of St. John's was considering only the addition of a small brick annex. But as the work progressed, the project evolved into a comprehensive, long-range plan for 19 new buildings. Each new building must be planned for the growth of the community in its several functions: as church, seminary, university, monastery and preparatory school. The Abbot summed up the feeling of the community in his letter to the 12 leading architects who were asked to submit plans for the buildings: "The Benedictine tradition at its best challenges us to think boldly and to cast our ideals in forms which will be valid for centuries to come, shaping them with all the genius of present-day materials and techniques." Functional and artistic success in such a building program depends upon the sensitivity of both patron and architect and the cooperative spirit that is engendered between them. The partnership between the community and Breuer has proved to be as productive as that of any of the great church builders of the Middle Ages. The scope and creativity of Breuer's master 100-year-plan and the spirit of cooperation between him and the monks, who are doing much of the actual labor themselves, have impressed architects all over the world. Hungarian-born Marcel Breuer, who first won recognition for his work with the Bauhaus group in Germany in the 1920's, subsequently taught at the Harvard School of Architecture. He has been practicing in this country and in Europe for 20 years; during this time, his outstanding works have been the church of St. John's Abbey, the UNESCO Building in Paris, the Torrington Manufacturing Plant in Los Angeles and the New Kensington Housing Project in Pittsburgh. A book about his work and ideas, Sun and Shadow, was published last year. -- from dust jacket.
