In this innovative fantasy adventure we encounter a mysterious talking bear and a small diverse group of humans crossing a continent to rescue a distant city state from the grasp of a tyrant; but their return home is put in jeopardy by one of the defeated enemy's vengeful creatures. 'The Ancestral Warrior' is a unique combination of fantasy, action, mystery and adventure quest, set in a parallel universe. The eastern city state of Karwaat is ruled by a tyrannical usurper, a renegade priest who has heightened his hypnotic skills through paranormal means. A Karwaatian academic, who dabbles in the occult, sends a captive djinn called Abu Dib to faraway Norland. This academic has read a legend about a warrior bear who once lived there and defeated a similar usurper. He believes that such a bear may still exist. He instructs the djinn to find and bring that bear to Karwaat. Having reached Norland, Abu Dib meets a young sheep farmer called Jo and, through her, a bear called Boris who works as a farmhand and is no warrior. Nevertheless, with the help of an exiled prince and his counselor, they muster a team of five comrades to escort Boris to Karwaat: Hermon, disgruntled son of the exiled prince; Lula, his romantically-inclined twin sister; Arthur, a dour woodsman; Neville, a hen-pecked village grocer; and Jo herself. Another comrade, called Rex, brother of a local lord, joins them along the way to Karwaat. The comrades cross nine countries - passing through cities and villages, forests and deserts, above and below ground. They travel on foot; by horse and by camel; in carriages and on steam-trains; and on a stinking, sea-going vessel transporting bird guano.Helped by allies enlisted along the way they reach Karwaat and begin a campaign of urban warfare. Finally Boris meets and defeats the usurper in single combat - a scene of violent carnage during which the enemy pits his hypnotic powers against all the comrades. Shortly after this, Jo kills the semi-parasitic mate of one of the enemy's creatures, an aquatic monster known as the Leviathan. Abu Dib now rewards each comrade with a 'magical' gift. The Leviathan pursues Jo during the comrades' homeward journey, seeking revenge. It arrives at her home town in Norland as the morning market is in full swing, causing pandemonium. But, although driven off for the time being, so long as it survives Jo's life is in danger. The comrades now devise a plan to destroy it using guile and high explosives. But the outcome is a mixed blessing for Lula. She was instrumental in its defeat, using the gift of telepathy given her by the djinn, and is ashamed of having used it to lure a sentient being to its death.Two romances develop but both are bedeviled by misunderstandings. That between Jo and Hermon eventually prospers; that between Lula and Rex fades gracefully. The magical aspects of the story are firmly grounded in a precise realism. The ecological and geopolitical traditions, religions and technologies found in the different countries are described in sufficient depth to give verisimilitude to the make-believe continent across which the story roams. The author has drawn upon his considerable working experience in Arabia and Africa.

What Is Your Quest? examines the future of electronic literature in a world where tablets and e-readers are becoming as common as printed books and where fans are blurring the distinction between reader and author. The construction of new ways of storytelling is already underway: it is happening on the edges of the mainstream gaming industry and in the spaces between media, on the foundations set by classic games. Along these margins, convergent storytelling allows for playful reading and reading becomes a strategy of play. One of the earliest models for this new way of telling stories was the adventure game, the kind of game centered on quests in which the characters must overcome obstacles and puzzles. After they fell out of fashion in the 1990s, fans made strenuous efforts to keep them alive and to create new games in the genre. Such activities highlight both the convergence of game and story and the collapsing distinction between reader and author. Continually defying the forces of obsolescence, fans return abandoned games to a playable state and treat stories as ever-evolving narratives. Similarly, players of massive multiplayer games become co-creators of the game experience, building characters and creating social networks that recombine a reading and gaming community. The interactions between storytellers and readers, between programmers and creators, and among fans turned world-builders are essential to the development of innovative ways of telling stories. And at the same time that fan activities foster the convergence of digital gaming and storytelling, new and increasingly accessible tools and models for interactive narrative empower a broadening range of storytellers. It is precisely this interactivity among a range of users surrounding these new platforms that is radically reshaping both e-books and games and those who read and play with them.
