Excerpt from Some Principles of Literary Criticism The following chapters were first prepared for the college lecture room, and, although since rewritten, they doubtless still betray by a certain dull, didactic manner the place of their origin. While directing the work of college classes, I had often looked about for a book that should give a compendious statement of the essentials of literature and the grounds of critical estimate. Finding no such book, I essayed to make one. Two or three books on the subject - born, I judge, of the same want that produced this one - have indeed appeared since these lectures were first written; but their purpose and method are quite different from those I have had in mind. I have attempted neither to expound a philosophy of criticism nor to elaborate a critical method; but simply to state, as plainly as I might, some qualities that by common consent are to be found in all writing deserving to be called literature, and to lay down some fundamental principles that must be assumed in all sound critical judgments. Excerpt from English Literary Criticism: The Medieval Phase T is generally taken for granted that literary criticism in England really began at the sixteenth-century Renascence. This assumption, it must be allowed, has at least this amount of justification, that then for the first time there ap peared in English a considerable body of works definitely devoted to literary problems, and represented by the Artes, the Discourses, and the Apologies of Elizabethan writers. Yet it does not follow that with these works critical activities in England had their actual beginnings, or that then for the first time Englishmen concerned themselves with problems of literature. The Middle Ages, we have learnt, were less dark than was once supposed. They reveal to-day much eager search after knowledge, besides considerable creative activity in art, litera ture and institutions. It is therefore worth inquiring, in View of the unbroken efforts at literary criticism from the Elizabethan age oaards, whether. Such critical. Activities were a product solely of modern times, or whether any evidence exists of earlier attempts to engage in those many-sided activities now known as literary criticism. The proverbial Philistine who refuses to see a play that will not make him laugh practices criticism of the most formidable kind and reveals in that practice all he is. For consider the implications of his critical reaction: the utter lack of humane sympathies, the stum of all gentler influences, the hard determination to give no part of his earnings for anything that neither stirs his senses nor flatters his consciousness of superiority. Consider, fur thermore, the forces in his civilization that have made him what he is: the insistence on mechanical values, the steely ferocities of business competition, the militant subordination of all the elements of life to one coarse and impoverishing kind of success. I could go further and point out how this Philistine's lack of a subtle shame in his attitude, indeed his brazen pride in it, demonstrates the failure on the part of the intellectuals of his age and country to create a cultural atmosphere in which he would be forced, despite himself, into an uneasy awareness of the poverty of his own soul. And I could proceed to an analysis of the impotence of these intellectuals. Or else, I could select another critical reaction of our average business man: his moral indignation over a literary or dramatic treatment of sex, and I could readily derive that from his own furtive grossness or em bittered self-repression.
