When Emma and Ted loaded their 150 BSA motorcycle on the Italian Trans-Mediterranean ship sailing for Tunisia, North Africa their plan was to spend four months touring and camping through Tunisia. Due to language problems they boarded the ship without the proper papers and/or tickets.Arrival in the port of Tunis presented a cultural shock in addition to the information that camping would be impossible, as the English-speaking Arab agent explained, We are having a war just now because of the French Ocupation Forces. After establishing their base camp at the Hostel in Bir el Bey ten miles from Tunis a series of adventures over the following four months enfolded. On a journey to the remote island of Djerba in southern Tunisia the small, over-loaded ferry, caught in a sudden squall nearly capsized. During a trip into the northern Sahara, south of the Oasis of Gabes they were caught in a life threatening sandstorm in the Sahara and a Locust Plague in the Gabes Oasis on the return journey north. An Arab named Habib added the element of intrigue. He assisted Ted in securing photographs of Bedouin Nomads. His basic motive was to secure the favors of Teds wife Emma. When he began to resort to life-threatening tactics the assistance of the American Counsulate was required. With the cooperation of the French Occupation Forces Habib was restrained until safe passage could be secured from Tunis to Marsaille, France.

Excerpt from The Adventures of Gerard, the Lion Killer: Comprising a History of His Ten Years' Campaign Among the Wild Animals of Northern Africa The usual number of habitues and loungers were sitting within, talking and laughing together, and a man was standing opposite the target, with rifle in hand ready to take his shot. As I joined the group standing near him, he brought his rifle to his shoulder, and hardly had the barrel attained its level, before the piece was dis charged, and the marker down at the other end of the gallery, called out mouche (the centre), at the same time marking the bullet hole with a white wand. There was something so quick and decided in the motions of the man, and as I fancied something of the air of the Mississippi scout in his posture, that I crossed over to the other side of the gallery to see his countenance. A heavy black beard and moustache trimmed to a point, concealed the lower part of a bronzed visage. The turban of the Spahi uniform shaded his forehead, his face was thin, and almost the only uncovered feature of his countenance by which the spec tator might judge the character of the man was the eye. This was dark and remarkably piercing, seeming to concentrate heat and light like a lens, and yet was not quick withal, but on the contrary, calm and slow in its movements. Before my observations were finished, the attendant handed to the marksman another rifle. Dropping his right foot a step behind, he raised the gun quickly as before, a scarcely discernible instant Of pause, and the report rang on the car, while from the other end of the gallery came back the marker's call mariee. Another shot and another, and always the same result, until a dozen shots had been fired, and a dozen bullets had been married, 'or piled, as the more literal Saxon would render it, in the centre Of the target. The marksman then bowed politely to the group of gentlemen standing by, and passed out of the gallery. The buzz Of conversation that had been hushed, was renewed, and turning to one of the attendants, I asked. High adventure in the sands of North Africa It is often claimed that Under Two Flags is the first-and possibly most famous-in a series of French Foreign Legion novels. It has been filmed and the images it conjures of sweating foot slogging legionnaires are familiar and iconic. In fact, it is a novel where the principal character is introduced to us as consummate officer of the British Household Cavalry and his adventures under the Tricolour begin when he joins, perhaps understandably, another cavalry regiment of the French Army of Africa-the corps d'elite of the Chasseurs d'Afrique! While that may turn many preconceptions of some potential readers on their head it does not prevent this story from being a substantial and engaging romp in the shifting sands of French Colonial Algeria. The Hon. Bertie Cecil finds his honesty and honour falsely compromised and to spare his lady love he abandons his privileged position in the Life Guards and absconds-accompanied only by his manservant, Rake-to an uncertain future within the ranks as a trooper of French Cavalry. Thankfully, danger, intrigue and adventure are not done with our hero and he must battle through them assisted by a femme fatale--the ever memorable Cigarette-to this wonderful tale's climactic conclusion. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.
