Excerpt from Advising a Woman as to Her Legal Rights The author of this Lecture, "Advising a Woman as to Her Legal Rights," has been a member of the bar for about forty years. In this period of extensive experience before the courts and in the practice of law he has acquired a fund of knowledge, unusual in its richness to those interested in legal problems. Here you can obtain the information which will assist you to avoid the pitfalls that ensnare those who seek to advise women as to their legal rights. Mr. Tucker was born at New Bedford, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1852. He received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Brown University at Providence, Rhode Island, in 1873, and his degree of Bachelor of Laws at Boston University in 1875. Subsequently, the degree of Doctor of Philosophy was conferred upon him. He practiced law in New Bedford from 1876 to 1882 and then removed his law office to Boston where he is in practice today. From 1890 to 1892, Mr. Tucker was a member of the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1892, he was appointed the Official Reporter of the Decisions of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts. He served in this position until the year 1900. Mr. Tucker is the author of numerous treatises and articles relating to the law. Among the important are "Testamentary Forms and Notes on Wills," and "Manual of Massachusetts Corporations." He is joint author of Gould and Tucker's "Notes on United States Statutes," and with Dr. Wilson of Harvard on "International Law." In The Politics of Women's Rights in Iran, Arzoo Osanloo explores how Iranian women understand their rights. After the 1979 revolution, Iranian leaders transformed the state into an Islamic republic. At that time, the country's leaders used a renewed discourse of women's rights to symbolize a shift away from the excesses of Western liberalism. Osanloo reveals that the postrevolutionary republic blended practices of a liberal republic with Islamic principles of equality. Her ethnographic study illustrates how women's claims of rights emerge from a hybrid discourse that draws on both liberal individualism and Islamic ideals. Osanloo takes the reader on a journey through numerous sites where rights are being produced--including Qur'anic reading groups, Tehran's family court, and law offices--as she sheds light on the fluid and constructed nature of women's perceptions of rights. In doing so, Osanloo unravels simplistic dichotomies between so-called liberal, universal rights and insular, local culture. The Politics of Women's Rights in Iran casts light on a contemporary non-Western understanding of the meaning behind liberal rights, and raises questions about the misunderstood relationship between modernity and Islam.

In Intimate Disconnections, Allison Alexy tells the fascinating story of the changing norms surrounding divorce in Japan in the early 2000s, when sudden demographic and social changes made it a newly visible and viable option. Not only will one of three Japanese marriages today end in divorce, but divorces are suddenly much more likely to be initiated by women who cite new standards for intimacy as their motivation. As people across Japan now consider divorcing their spouses, or work to avoid separation, they face complicated questions about the risks and possibilities marriage brings: How can couples be intimate without becoming suffocatingly close? How should they build loving relationships when older models are no longer feasible? What do you do, both legally and socially, when you just can’t take it anymore?
