In Advocating Dignity, Jean H. Quataert explores the emergence, development, and impact of the human rights revolution following World War II. Intertwining popular local and national mobilizations for rights with ongoing developments of a formal international system of rights monitoring in the United Nations, Quataert argues that human rights advocacy networks have been a vital dimension of international political developments since 1945. Recalling the popular slogan "Think globally, act locally," she contends that postwar human rights have been shaped by the efforts of people at the grassroots. She shows that human rights politics are constituted locally and reinforced by transnational linkages in international society. The U.N. system is continuously reinvigorated and strengthened by its ties to local individuals, organizations, and groups engaged in day-to-day rights advocacy. This daily work, in turn, is supported by the ongoing activities from above. Quataert establishes the global contexts for the historical unfolding of human rights advocacy through thorough studies of such cases as the Soviet dissident movement, the mothers' demonstrations in Argentina, the transnational antiapartheid campaign, and coalitions for gender and economic justice. Drawing from many fields of inquiry, including legal studies, philosophy, international relations theory, political science, and gender history, Advocating Dignity is an innovative work that narrates the hopes and bitter struggles that have altered the course of international and domestic relations over the past sixty years.

Shortly after the Connecticut Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, Gabriel Filer heard an unexpected call to enter politics. At the age of seventeen he successfully fought back attempts to outlaw same-sex marriage in the Connecticut Constitution. A month after surviving the toughest political earthquake he contacts over sixty lawmakers and organizations, and begins advocating for gay rights nationwide. In 2009 Gabriel teamed with North Carolina State Senator Julia Boseman to help pass the School Violence Prevention Act. This provision protects LGBT students from being bullied in North Carolina public schools. On June 30, 2009 North Carolina became the ninth state to enact a comprehensive anti-bullying law. Two days before Gabriel's high school graduation he managed to make history by breaking a forty year legislative impasse. The School Violence Prevention Act caused ten states to reexamine the way they address discrimination in public schools. Just when Gabriel was finally ready to leave politics, he heard another unexpected call to help others. This time he was needed to help pass marriage equality in Washington state. During the 2012 campaign, he meets prominent leaders in Seattle's gay community and works with friends to help fundraise a grassroots campaign. By the end of 2012 Gabriel has helped secure same-sex marriage victories on both coasts. Since graduating from college he continues to champion for the rights of gays and lesbians across the world. His dedication to improving public policy is reflected throughout this book. His early accomplishments and determination eventually propel marriage equality to the United States Supreme Court.

Of the over 33 million refugees and internally displaced people in the world today, a disproportionate percentage are found in Africa. Most have been driven from their homes by armed strife, displacing people into settings that fail to meet standards for even basic human dignity. Protection of the human rights of these people is highly uncertain and unpredictable. Many refugee service agencies agree advocacy on behalf of the displaced is a key aspect of their task. But those working in the field are so pressed by urgent crises that they can rarely analyze the requirements of advocacy systematically. Yet advocacy must go beyond international law to human rights as an ethical standard to prevent displaced people from falling through the cracks of our conflicted world. Refugee Rights: Ethics, Advocacy, and Africa draws upon David Hollenbach, SJ's work as founder and director of the Center for Human Rights and International Justice at Boston College to provide an analytical framework for vigorous advocacy on behalf of refugees and internally displaced people. Representing both religious and secular perspectives, the contributors are scholars, practitioners, and refugee advocates—all of whom have spent time "on the ground" in Africa.
